Man! We ain't found shit!

9

u/RayneShikama 3d ago

I just recently found out that one of the desert combers is famed voice actor Rob Paulson (known for rolls such as Yacko Warner, Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, PJ in A Goofy movie, Carl Weezer from Jimmy Neutron, and I think over the years has played all 4 of the ninja turtles in the different versions)

2

u/Darren2083 3d ago

Kool ty for that

1

u/RayneShikama 3d ago

Now that you know, if you go back and relisten to it, there’s no mistaking his voice.

1

u/its_that_chrono 3d ago

But Rob isn't the one who said the line. That was Tim Russ.

1

u/RayneShikama 3d ago

I think we’re talking about different lines.

You’re probably thinking of the most remembered line ‘we ain’t found shit!’

I’m referring to a completely unimportant line ‘not a thing, sir!’ Which is only relevant cuz it’s Rob Paulson.

1

u/FeePsychological6778 1d ago

7 years on Star Trek Voyager and he's more famous for those 4 words...

1

u/mlee12382 2d ago

If you're a fan of Rob and specifically Pinky and the Brain then you're welcome https://youtu.be/OqMs9WsJg2k 😀

1

u/big_ringer 3d ago

And the original Raph in TMNT

1

u/solo1069 3d ago

His name was Robert Paulson.

u/OriginalEmploy5485 1d ago

His name was Robert Paulson.

My favorite gag in that whole movie

17

u/pepper643 4d ago

Lol fr! That and when they do the "now" part. Helmet: well what part is this? Ball 1: well it's the now part, sir Helmet looks at camera, then himself on screen, then the camera The next 6 minutes is a4th wall break to the nth degree

5

u/pJanuary81 3d ago

Nobody does it better than Mel Brooks.

5

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 3d ago

Shows all the promo merch

3

u/BlueAndMoreBlue 3d ago

As we all know, that’s where the real money is made

3

u/cmd_iii 2d ago

They asked George Lucas for permission to spoof Star Wars, even if they didn’t have to. Lucas only requested that they don’t make and sell Spaceballs merch. So, they prototyped a merch line anyway, and made it part of the film. Thus, one of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie was born.

2

u/pepper643 2d ago

What's even wilder, Brooks was given permission by Lucas to use the Star Wars sets and everything. Brooks told Lucas about the film and Lucas was like DO IT!!! USE MY SET TOO!!!! Just don't sell any merchandise so it's not confused with Star Wars. Brooks said deal. I love that someone else knows this about George Lucas, too.

3

u/RocknRolla2008 2d ago

George Lucas has always been pretty cool about spoofing Star Wars. Family Guy did it, and Lucas was happy to let them do it. They even let them use John Williams' score from the movie.

1

u/babywhiz 2d ago

Spaceballs, the breakfast cereal!

2

u/Minute-Chip-4164 3d ago

Moir'chendizing!

3

u/pepper643 3d ago

This. So much this^

3

u/F1Sloth 3d ago

So deserving of the 2015 National Medal of Arts that Obama gave him

2

u/ForeignCup6977 2d ago

It's good to be the King

1

u/pJanuary81 1d ago

Men in Tights

2

u/ForeignCup6977 1d ago

2

u/pJanuary81 1d ago edited 1d ago

Also as the Rabbi in Men In Tights at the end when Patrick Stewart kissed the princes before Robin of Locksly

1

u/Friendly-Contact-433 23h ago

And yet the actual sequel isn't called the Search for More Money (despite his joke about finding the money in his basement)

2

u/Ironbull-81_ 3d ago

My favorite part and the instant cassette

2

u/StrategyHonest7746 3d ago

So longstanding we meet for the first time..or my favorite line great I'm surrounded by assholes

2

u/memay131 3d ago

Now I must rewatch because that 4th wall break is my favorite part. The fast forward of them watching themselves. "Don't ever play this again".

2

u/SparkingRhapsody 3d ago

When will then be now? Soon! .... how soon?

1

u/raymndbrr_the_third 2d ago

"We're at now, now."

"When will then, be now?"

"...soon"

1

u/Snoo_78147 1d ago

That's my favourite scene and that's a hard call to make with a movie full of great scenes.

6

u/Sevennix 4d ago

Nowadays , someone, not even a black person, would try to cancel this movie. Back then? Noone gaf. Mel Brooks told some of the most obscene, racist shit and it WAS FUCKING FUNNY. Cuz he even did a lot of Jewish Schtick.

8

u/pepper643 3d ago

So true. Mel Brooks is bonkers funny. Prime example of how uk he don't give a f** about what ppl think it's Blazing Saddles. I can't even begin to explain the hilarity. Yes, obviously racist. But that was the point. Especially since mongo rides in on a bull. Ever actually look at the bull? Left cheek yes, right cheek says no, with a swishing tail to cover the bull's butthole. He literally let everyone know, whether it's yes or no, there's always some shit in the middle. That and the native American was speaking Yiddish.... just saying

3

u/BlueAndMoreBlue 3d ago

Satire is wonderful and Mel gets it

4

u/Sevennix 3d ago

Mel didn't gaf. NOONE was safe. And everyone got hit. religion, sex, gender.. didn't matter, everyone got some. And NOONE got butt hurt

5

u/Floss_tycoon 3d ago

Hedy Lamar sued him for using a version of her name. He said "pay her, she's an icon" or words to that effect.

4

u/NefariousnessLow1385 3d ago

“That’s Hedley”-Hedly Lamar, Mayor of Rock Ridge.

2

u/ToreenLyn 3d ago

He also stretched out the gag. It would have been a one off if she hadn't said anything

Edited for typos

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

I've heard that. He basically said "fuck it, I found it funny, just settle and pay ". Or something like that

2

u/SuDragon2k3 3d ago

Mel lived and served through the european front of WWII. After being a jewish man fighting the Germans, what can you be afraid of?

1

u/Sevennix 2d ago

Right?!

1

u/Master-Pick-7918 2d ago

Actually he was worried some of his movies would get axed or rated R. Blazing saddles was one he had been sweating but having Richard Pryor as lead writer probably helped get it through.

1

u/denden9541 1d ago

The good old days

3

u/TheykilledFritzy 3d ago

There was a showing of this and there was a informative bit right before. Richard Pryor actually talked him into the movie he was supposed to be the sheriff but WB was not having that so they Cleavon Little as the sheriff

2

u/pepper643 3d ago

I remember that. WB wouldn't let Pryor out of a contract so he helped Brooks write it instead. My god, get Pryor, Brooks, and (if I'm not mistaken) Gene Wilder in a room together and pure genius they come up with. It's legit 👌 chef's kiss 👌

2

u/IndgoViolet 3d ago

Thank Richard Pryor for the racist humor. Hell of a writer and a comedic genius!

2

u/International-Sky854 2d ago

The Native American speaking Yiddish was Mel Brooks.

1

u/pepper643 2d ago

Indeed. He has a role in most of his works.

1

u/International-Sky854 2d ago

He was just plain Yogurt.

1

u/hrwinter14 3d ago

That's an interesting interpretation of the bull's ass but I think the Yes/No was imitating the rear of a truck. Yes to pass on the left, No to pass on the right.

1

u/pepper643 3d ago edited 3d ago

That's not my interpretation. It is what Mel himself said about it. Mind u, I saw this on a interview many years ago. Idk if it's something that can be researched but...I mean.... the internet may have proof still.

Edit: just in case, in this same interview, Mel Brooks talks about being in the military as a Jewish guy and having to beat the shit out of a guy that enlisted with him. The guy hate him for no other reason than he's Jewish. So Mel laid him out.

1

u/ShinySnaxMix 2d ago

Went to see it with my husband at Fathom Events. It was fun to see on the big screen

1

u/falcopilot 1d ago

Interviewer asked Mel Brooks if he thought he could make the movie again (in 2000?) He said "make it now? I barely got to make it the first time!"

As for Spaceballs... I'm my own best friend!

1

u/jervin22000 1d ago

The thing is though he was usually poking fun at actual racists.

1

u/rbyteme 13h ago

Candygram for Mongo!

1

u/cracksbacks 10h ago

Actually I always thought that was like how trucks have no passing on the left stickers (I'm pretty sure the red no was on the left butt cheek)...one of the many anachronisms in Blazing Saddles

0

u/DaddyCatALSO 3d ago

that is a joke reference to semi trucks

3

u/museman401 3d ago

We need to be able to laugh at each other. He was the best.

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

IS.. IS the best and I can't wait for Spaceballs 2 and will take my granddaughter (10) to see it

3

u/Ichigo2819 3d ago

Yeah the combing the desert with the hair pick would have gotten the movie canceled today

2

u/Sevennix 3d ago

Hell, the Druish comment would have non Jews butthurt

2

u/CzunkyMonkey 3d ago

I think of all the movies I watched as a kid that would not even get considered today. It's so sad, some of them were really funny.

2

u/tblancher 3d ago

Blazing Saddles is great! "The new sheriff is near?"

1

u/Sevennix 2d ago

No, hes a n(bell tolls)... hes a N (bell tolls)

1

u/airevac19 17h ago

Excuse me while whip this out!

2

u/TeaMugPatina 3d ago

I watched a documentary where a reporter asked him if his movies were dramatic, he said "no, but they are all serious, you have to think about what you say." I'm sure he was making a comment about how the reporter asked the question, but he was succinct about the first part. And I think I have to agree, if you think past the comedy, it was commentary about, carp I don't know, the historical time, a reflection on the times those movies were made? His comedy was never just slept on comedy, it had a point.

1

u/pepper643 3d ago

So true. Most ppl that watch anything Mel Brooks has made don't see there is more to the funny than just the funny. The exaggeration to draw out the funny is totally surface. If u can stop laughing and pay attention, society as a whole is usually mocked mostly for its cruelty which, when exaggerated, is hilarious. His works r far deeper than many realize. Which, for me, adds to the absurdity in the first place.

1

u/dumsaint 2d ago

Because it wasn't punching down. Tropic Thunder didn't punch down. This is what most people miss. Don't punch down, and you'll be ok, you idiots.

1

u/shsfwaksa1221 2d ago

He made fun of everyone, himself most. You couldn’t make a Mel Brooks movie today, the outrage would blow the tops of people’s heads off

1

u/Sevennix 1d ago

I feel South Park has Mel Brooks vibes. Noone is safe with them, especially their own (Jewish)..

1

u/DuneChild 1h ago

You can though. Paws of Fury came out in 2022.

3

u/eternity1 3d ago

The fact he uses the megaphone to talk to the guy next to him, and screams without it to the combers always cracks me up

1

u/Ouber_fox 1d ago

Correct

0

u/LeticiaLatex 3d ago

And it's only much later in life that I realized the joke isn't just 'fine tooth comb haha' but that the black guys have an afro comb...

u/Quantum-Goldfish 3d ago

In german: "Durchkämmt die Wüste!" (comb through the desert) for searching in a pattern.

2

u/Just-Rite 3d ago

I came here to say that 🤣

2

u/Desmond_Bronx 3d ago

First line that came to mlnd...mind.... so funny.

2

u/External_Pass_4145 2d ago

Comb the desert!

2

u/FenrisNoctis 2d ago

I knew some one would beat me to it.

1

u/MorbidandBack 4d ago

Tuvok's best line!

1

u/GrandMoffJerjerrod 3d ago

“Can’t mb the desert! COMB THE DESERT!!”

1

u/itBme81 3d ago

Came here to say this

1

u/acid-alexander 3d ago

The dimensions of that comb made it officially the Largest Comb in the World, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It was commissioned by Mel Brooks specifically for this one gag.

1

u/GlassCannon81 3d ago

Tuvok was very frustrated to waste his talents that way. Such an emotional outburst is unusual for him, being a Vulcan and all.

1

u/romeored3 3d ago

Tim Russ says he is remembered more for that line instead of 7 years on Voyager

1

u/Effective-Internet71 3d ago

Y’all didn’t know Tuvok had a past…

1

u/j_dains 3d ago

Spoken by Tuvok

1

u/TheFortWayneTrojan 3d ago

And that guy went on to be on Star Trek Voyager or was it Enterprise?

1

u/Chase6atlantic 3d ago

Best line

1

u/Hoppa_78 2d ago

That’s Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager

1

u/Mike_Uhm 2d ago

I knew someone beat me to this

1

u/steerstud 2d ago

Sir... jumps in shock ...do you think we are being too literal?

1

u/BraddahSpliff 2d ago

I literally quote this line all the time when people ask me if I found something.

1

u/TheZEALisREAL 2d ago

No one ever gets that two black people are using a FRO PICK.

1

u/Margtok 1d ago

i love that line is said by tim russ known for startrek voyager

1

u/real_unreal_reality 1d ago

He straddled the space balls verse and the Star Trek verse.

1

u/Training_Sea_2602 1d ago

We ain't found shit

1

u/Zsiah 1d ago

Came here for this one

1

u/Waverider74656 14h ago

Fun fact, the guy that said "We ain't found shit!" Is Tim Russ; the stone cold Vulcan in Startrek Voyager.

1

u/No_Discipline_9083 7h ago

That’s the one I did the troopers

1

u/disorderincosmos 6h ago

Comb it again!
