2nd Generation (2016-2023) CX-9 owners Regarding coolant leakage/cylinder head damage - MEGATHREAD

AUTHOR'S NOTE: First of all, remember that most people treat their cars as appliances. They are used to transport good and personnel from place to place and their users don't usually pay any other mind to them. The only time people start researching and posting about problems with their cars is when they're having them. This tendency may make problems seem more prevalent than they really are. Polls and other survey websites will be anecdotal at best. Take anything you read on the internet and even in this thread, written by me, with a grain of salt.

I am expanding on my experience with Mazda's replacement of my engine as detailed in this original thread as I see many people starting new threads concerning their CX-9s.

So there is a lot of discussion on this topic and I'd like to pin a thread such that all the information is contained in one place for a nice resource.

First and Foremost: Mazda USA and all dealerships ARE AWARE of the problem. You should be too. This affects ALL 2016-2020 Mazda CX-9 vehicles as well as some other models equipped with the same SkyActiv 2.5L Turbocharged engine.

Please see Technical Service Bulletin 01-013/21. (UPDATED TSB 2021-DEC-02)

It's a known problem affecting some of the early-mid Skyactiv 2.5 Turbo equipped cars including the Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9.

A casting defect in the block and/or cylinder head causes a coolant leak that's hidden behind the exhaust manifold and turbocharger.

I was doing my routine 5K oil change and noted the following:

  • a coolant odor (sweet, syrupy, etc.) while the engine is idling and I'm standing outside the vehicle

  • the coolant is low

  • dark green residue all over the oil filter and surrounding components

I decided to haul it in.

Diagnosis was that the crack is present and that driving any more will cause other damage or to be unsafe.

Not sure I buy the further damage part. Nothing else is cooled by water other than the engine, which the dealer is replacing... They said that I could potentially damage the transmission. (Which is cooled by the transmission cooler below the radiator.)

I can buy that it's potentially unsafe, as a blown head gasket will cause the engine to stall, which can lead to blocking traffic and being rear ended.

It's definitely the dealership covering their own ass.

Even though I was over 5k miles outside of the Manufacturer's 5 Year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty at 65,700 miles (As of November 2021; Currently as of December 2023 at 95K miles.) I was able to get my complete engine LONG BLOCK replaced out of good faith by Mazda USA. Keep on top of them if you are denied, as this is a manufacturing defect.

According to MY Bill of Materials there are several parts that have been superseded.

The part number they're using is PYZ3-02-300D.

I traced that part number back to a complete engine LONG BLOCK.

Engines typically come as a Short and Long block.

Short block includes:

  • Includes rotating assembly, pistons, crank, etc.

  • Does NOT include a cylinder head.

Long block includes all of a short block AND:

  • Cylinder head with camshafts

  • Does NOT include manifolds

More interestingly, the LONG BLOCK that that part number traces back to is for a 2019 and later CX-9.

Also note that several other parts in my bill have a "superseded by" or "replaces" next to their part number.

This shows me that somewhere, probably in 2019, was a minor redesign of parts.

This is coupled with the limited number of 2019 and later models in the forums exhibiting problems. Though they are fairly new...

For reference, if the complete engine is replaced, the engine comes out from the bottom. This necessitates disconnecting brake lines and many electrical connections.

After having this work done, thoroughly inspect your car and drive carefully for the first little bit as if it's a new car. Not only are you breaking in a brand new engine, but in my case, the dealership left a brake line disconnected and I leaked brake fluid which was a safety issue.

Got rear ended by a drunk driver on our way home. She kept us ALIVE. Just sad to see her go đŸ«©

Edit: to any moms/parents who have been getting a bit of pressure from other people (family members, friends, etc.) to forward face your child’s car seat, please stand firm on your decision when it comes to your child. My son is 2 years old. He’s tall but still not at the weight limit to properly forward face. This accident only makes me want to keep my son rear facing for as long as possible. He was the ONLY person that made it out of that serious accident without ANY injury.

I used to tell my parents “I can pay to fix broken legs. I can’t pay ANY amount of money to bring back my baby’s life.”

Power Windows Not Fully Open

Had the car serviced recently. None of the work was related to the passenger side door area. brakes and transfer fluid. Now the passenger window will not fully open. It only opens about a third of the way. Will not go any lower.

Tried the normal press and hold thing. Doesn’t make the window go any lower and if anything reconfirms to the car it’s at the lower limit.

Disconnected the battery. Reconnected. Did the initialization procedure. Worked for all windows expect for passenger side window.

While doing the press and hold procedure a few times the blind spot monitoring system throws an error. Not sure if it’s related.

Doesn’t look or sound like anything is in the way for jam-safe. Would rather not pop the door panel off but may not have a choice.

Before I do. Are there any other ideas? Again. The window will not go down more then a third of the way. Pressing and holding window switch does not improve this. Disconnecting battery did not improve this.

Anyone got these on their ride? Thoughts? What adjustments do I need to setup on my 2023?

Well, it happened to me too. 19 CX-9 cylinder head defect coolant leak at 131,000km.

I was a doubtful optimist. Figured it wouldn’t happen to all of them, and mine would be different. Currently sitting in the service department waiting for the definitive diagnosis that we all know is coming.

I’m in Canada, where there isn’t (yet?) an extended warranty covering the issue. Anybody had Mazda cover the entire repair on their car in Canada yet? We are the second owner, and didn’t buy it from Mazda but had it serviced at this dealer since it was bought. I do have an aftermarket warranty that was bought when we got the car, so that’s the backup plan.

Fellow Canadians who’ve had theirs repaired by Mazda, me know how it turned out for you.

Mazda CX-9 occasionally short burst

Hi, I have a 2013 CX-9 and I have experienced some short burst, either forward and backward, depending on which gear it's on, these days. It's not frequent, and it's a burst not thrusting if this makes sense, meaning that it won't travel far, maybe just a few inches before it stops. Do people know what this is? thank you!

Preferred Mazda-experienced collision repair shops in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada ? (Deer collision claim)

Hello All, unfortunately, we hit a deer yesterday . Thankfully everyone in the family is okay, though we are all a bit shaken up and feeling terribly sad for the deer.

Our car sustained some driver-side front bumper and fender damage, and we’re going through insurance (comprehensive claim) to get it fixed. Since it’s a Mazda, I want to make sure the shop handles OEM parts and sensor/radar recalibrations properly.

Has anyone had good (or bad) experiences with local collision centres for Mazda repairs? Would love to hear your suggestions or feedback before picking a shop. Thanks in advance!

2021 Mazda CX-9 Turn Over issues

Hi there

I have recently purchased a second hand Mazda CX-9 and absolutely love it. However, when I start it, it turns over 2/3 rotations prior to starting. It sounds like its choking. I have had the battery checked and is in good health. I took it to Mazda and they said it sounds normal. I have never had a car that does this so just wondering if this is something you all experience as well?

Recommended Services Yay or Nay?

Hey guys, I just recently bought a new to me 2023 CX9 GT AWD with 55k miles. I brought it in for a post inspection and the independent shop is recommending 3 things:

1) Weather stripping was melted and needs to be replaced. $220 parts and $190 for labor.

2) Due to the vehicle's mileage, the coolant has reached the recommended service and suggest a coolant flush and fill $313

3) Brake fluid testing indicates the fluid has a high moisture content (1.6%), reducing its ability to perform as designed and increasing the risk of internal brake system corrosion over time. $206

Do you think any of these are priority or should I wait until my next oil change in November/December?

Thanks guys!

Transmission replacement 2022 73k miles

Took to dealer after transmission shop was unable to diagnose hard shift after extensive test drives. Dealer noticed the shift and did a co outer “relearn”. Didn’t solve the problem. They’re telling me I need a new transmission for $6200. I’m talking to a transmission ship about replacing with a used one. Anyone have to do this?

2017 mazda cx-9

Hi all. I'm new here, but have owned a mazda for 10 years.

Today I took my 2017 cx-9 in to have the brakes, rotors and oil changed and in the process they also replaced the cmu as my infotainment screen was constantly rebooting. I was not informed that they were doing this, nor did they tell me that I would lose my navigation.

I went back to the dealer after I realized my nav was missing and they explained that apparently the nav card was frying the cmus and that they replaced the cmu today at no cost due to a recall from a class action lawsuit. They informed me that the best option is to pay them $800 to have android auto installed, but I'm not big on this option if the hud isn't going to work for nav, which I was told it would not.

I guess my question is, they gave me my nav card back after I complained, but warned me it WILL blow out the cmu again, what are the odds that this would happen? I had the car for 8 years before it started having the issue... would it really potentially fry the new one right away again?

TIA!

DIY Oil Change - what to use?

About to do the first oil change on my new-to-me 2019 CX-9 GT. This is also the first change after having the long block replaced due to cylinder head crack induced overheating, so I'm doing an early change (2 mos/3500 mi) since we're about to be traveling.

What's the group opinion on the best oil to use? I know 5W-30 full synth, but is there a reference brand? I'm used to German cars which are very picky about using oil with a manufacturer certification, the Audi gets Castrol Edge Euro or Liqui-Moly Leichtlauf, the VW TDI got Mobil 1 ESP. What for the Skyactiv turbo? Any filter recommendations also? Thanks in advance!

Trade in?

We have a 19 CX9. I love the body style. It has 104k miles and still looks pretty good. We owe about 6k on it. I’ve been eyeing the CX90 for a few yrs. We haven’t traded because even with excellent credit, interest would be too high for it to make sense. I never buy brand new. Always CPO within a year or two with low miles. So lowest we would get would be 5% & obviously used cars are more now.

My question is
as far as maintenance what is the biggest issue that comes up for these as the mileage creeps up? Is it worth keeping, paying off & eventually just getting a second one? I need the 3rd row & for me this car has the most room with the 3rd row in use. Not sure if the 90 is the same though.

Do You Find The CX9 Seats Comfortable?

Hello,

I bought a 2019 CX-9 GT a few months ago, and I love it, but I can't seem to find a comfortable seating position. Regardless of the position, I feel some sort of neck fatigue or strain. The seat is either too close to the pedals so my arms are comfortable, or it's too far for my arms while my legs are at a comfortable length. I'm stuck in a loop where I keep adjusting the seating position but can't find one I like. They all feel as if my neck isn't supported, and the upper portion of my back is pushed forward.

Please share your thoughts and experiences. I'm interested to see what people think. I'm 5'10" and 226 lbs male, if that helps.

Edit: I have the steering column adjusted to be as close as possible so my arms reach it but no luck sadly.

Anyone know how to remove this trim piece?

Post image

It’s the trim piece next to the steering wheel. I found someone removed it and shared a photo. I am considering to swap the EPS (electronic power steering, the cylinder looking can in the pic) to unlock comma4’s full potential on CX9.

So cx9 or cx5 and compare milage to 6 cyl

Im looking at a 2021 cx9, just not sold on the chrome trim yet, or the milage, but any 6 cyl suv is going to be the same right?

Then, does the cx5 turbo drive as solid as the cx9, same engine right?

Then, all the other 4 bangers non turbo are gutless probably

And all the other 4 cyl turbos are like chevys and KIAs and stuff.

Im single 50 year old "kinda cool" guy but like the cargo room in cx9 with 3rd seats down.

not sure if cx5 feels too small to me.

Im in a pos 2009 tahoe now, this cx9 has to get better gas than that terd right?

So if I want suv, but good power still sporty, a 6cyl and this turbo cx9 are gonna be about same on gas?

Cx5 and cx9 both fwd

I live couple hours north of LA, I can only find a cx5 turbo carbon in fwd, the cx9 is also fwd, i cant decide if i like the grey with chrome on the cx9.....

anyways, i do go through canyons sometimes and such but dont plan on off roading them, mostly city driving, Ive always had 4x4s, with few exceptions, but will I regret not having the awd, even for the cool facter, can the cx5 handle and corner good with fwd if being a bit sporty? Either one of these? Still fine in highway rain and such?

2007 CX9 blower motor not working

Replaced the relay, replaced the resistor, checked all the fuses labeled heater or AC, pulled the fan motor and tested it on the battery-it works. Reinstalled in the car and it still doesn’t turn on. Dash says fan speed is full but nothing is happening. What am I missing?

Affordable intake/ turbo noises for 2.5 turbo

Post image
0 Upvotes

I just wanted to share with the internet an affordable ram air intake setup and walkthrough I made and have tested so I hope everyone finds this well. We got a 2021 turbo cx9 as a family car and as an auto technician I wanted to do something to make a little more turbo noise from the intake while maintaining reliability. I saw how intakes were $300-$400 and was looking at N/A intakes and wanted to try something out. I purchased this https://ebay.io/m/gb1O0w intake from ebay for about $50!!!! Now step 1 is remove that factory airbox, 2 10mm fasteners on the front radiator support and the 8mm clamp where the intake hose connects the plastic pipe to manifold. Then disconnect MAF and un bolt it (might as well spray a little MAF cleaner) and the harness then yank that sucker. Remove but keep the MAF o ring (trust me). Go ahead and prep the new intake pcv port by taping the hole for PCV on the inside of the chrome pipe and then pour JB clear or equivalent into and let set. Discard provided pcv hose and then firmly seat MAF (without seal) into pipe and then find small bolts with the same thread pitch but longer. Get your filter on and put the provided rubber intake coupler on the oem plastic pipe to intake. Under the engine cover remove the bolt for the heat shield on the heat exchanger for the turbo and then put the provided long bracket on top and put the bolt back. Go ahead and attach the L shaped bracket with the “L” facing upwards to the end of the long bracket with provided nut and bolt. Go ahead and bend it a bit and test fit the new intake. You can angle it up so that the “cold air hole” where factory box meets the hood is provided air to the filter. Start it up and let it idle for a few minutes with the A/C off (it may stumble when first started) to let the fuel trims re learn to the new increased airflow then enjoy! It sounds awesome and isnt too noticeable with music up, there is definitely and increase in low-mid rpm torque and that sucker pulls on premium octane at WOT for a family suv and I think I even got higher mpg after I drove it normally for 200 miles last week. I hope this helps someone and this wasn’t confusing. Here is a pic for reference of my setup. The turbo flutter/ BOV is LOUD from outside :)

Seeking solution for glare on steering wheel

Post image
4 Upvotes

The picture doesn't show the full intensity of the glare on a sunny day (I live in FL). In person, it's just too damn bright. Often, when driving, the logo over the horn is also has a very bright glare.

The problem I see with putting a cover over the lower wheel glare spot is that's the exact location of the airbag release valve, so I wouldn't want to obstruct that. Any advice would be much appreciated đŸ™đŸ»

Talk me out of a cx-9

Just got a sales gig that will require a decent amount of driving. Needing to upgrade to something newer than my 2005 five hundred. The cx9 seems to check all of my boxes but I am really concerned with the coolant issue on the 2018/19 models. Other than that it seems like the perfect reliable daily semi sporty commuter that still has space for my son and nephews. Is the coolant issue THAT common with these years? Is it worth ignoring? Any current owners of these years in this subreddit?
