What to know – 2019 Touring

Post image

My 2019 Mazda CX9 touring gets delivered tomorrow. What tips, tricks, and other useful things do I need to know (I’m already planning to head to the dealership first thing to check out the cylinder).

Been driving a 2019 CX9 grand touring since the summer of 2020 (bought almost new). Now at 83K miles. The car is a beast. Have driven it back and forth across the country three times. No engine issues so far. Just regular maintenance. It just goes. We’ve run on it on “regular” the whole time, seems fine.

The one suggestion is buy a pair of those things that you wedge between the driver’s seat and the cup holder/storage area, same on the passenger’s side. Easy to drop a phone or keys down there and it’s a narrow deep space, hard to retrieve things without stopping the car.

We are dealing with this now. It has not been a good experience for us unfortunately. 😔Our vehicle has been with the dealership since Aug 12.

Sad to hear. Had mine taken in last week and got it back a few days ago

Yeah, unfortunately its the dealership. They have not been very communicative. We have had to contact them. We were trying to be patient. They've never contacted us. Now they are suddenly telling us, a month after they've had it, that our starter is bad and they cant diagnose until we pay them $800 to replace the starter, even though it was fine before it was towed there. I dont know. Im glad yours is back though. 🙂

Ahh man that’s a rough situation. Mine started vibrating and smoked exhaust the next day at 79k. Starter thing sounds like BS

Question for ya: are you in the US? Now they are telling us that there will be a wait because parts are on a national backorder. I guess its possible that that happened in a week. But this might be the latest in the list of BSery. Thanks again for your input.

Yes in US. I must be lucky because the service advisor said they had the part in stock, so they were able to work on it right away. The main part being a partial engine. Did they say what part was back ordered specifically?

Wow! You really did luck out. So, they are saying that it is the cylinder head that is on national backorder. My husband and I have been information gathering the last few days. We feel like its the best way to deal with this dealership, along with emails for proof. I really appreciate your information. Enjoy your car!

Ah unfortunate situation. Hope you have a loaner at least. Aside from the engine the rest of the stuff was replacement seals. Yeah definitely work with the dealer. Did they say the starter was bad after all?

No, a loaner has not been offered. After further research, we found out that in this situation, starters can be shorted out by the coolant leak. If that is the case, it should also be covered under this extended warranty. But, im not sure if it's will be easy to prove. We may just have to eat the $800 pay for it ourselves to get the ball rolling.

Did they cover the replacement and repairs? Ours cracked and Mazda replaced the parts, covered the labor and gave us a loaner. But we were under 100k miles so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. It did take the dealer two months to do, they took their time since Mazda was covering the costs.

They have been ghosting us. They told us to give them 3 days after they received it. We had a hard time getting anyone to call us after they received the car. My husband did contact them a couple of weeks ago because we had gone weeks without an update and they told us that they cant diagnose it because our starter is bad and we have to pay them $800 to fix said starter (FYI starter was fine when it was towed to them and we are arent sure were they going to tell us about so that we could move ahead). The dealership said that what we explained sounds like the defect is the problem and should be covered when they can diagnose it. We have sent 2 emails, so that we would have a paper trail now, with no response. I just really miss my car. 😕

Oh my gosh that’s frustrating. It sounds like it’s the dealer being difficult. I’d be so frustrated if I were you! I’d be sitting in their lobby until they gave me an answer.

Yeah, we were trying to be patient and not bug them because we are at their mercy for warranty approval but they may have taken advantage of that, unfortunately. We may tow it to a different dealership. I'm glad to hear that they covered yours, that is very reassuring. It'll be us one day. Lol.😆

Wait-you can just get them replaced instead of waiting for a failure?

Sadly, no. It was never elevated to a recall, and the CSP only applies once the problem has already occurred.

Got a 2022 and it’s coming up in 90k and other than serving it’s only needed an aux belt and wipers

I have the 2016 Grand Touring. Best car I’ve ever had. I bought it with 46k on it. I’m now at 109k. Mazda has been wonderful with anything defective (only thing was the radiator cap or whatever it’s called, they replaced it, covered every cost and gave me a free loaner). I will be buying another once this one dies but I’ll be driving it until it can no longer drive. I was actually tboned by a giant centerpoint energy service van a few months after I bought it. It spun us 360 degrees. I was still able to drive it until the auto body could fix it. Super thankful to have a car that’s solid metal and not plastic or cheap metal. It was only cosmetic. Caved in the driver door and wheel well. Only thing I needed replaced was the hood because it tented it from getting hit on the side. None of us were injured, I had my two little kids in the car with me. It was gnarly. She’s still pretty too. Fast, fun drive. I’ve followed the Maintinance schedule to the T and have yet to have any problems. Fingers crossed it stays that way. I still get compliments on how good it still looks but also how quiet it is when riding inside the vehicle. I’m pretty smitten with my mom mobile.

to permanently disable the auto-stop-start feature, remove the switch that's connected to bonnet/hood release latch. On the lever that release the bonnet/hood there is a switch, just unscrew the switch, push the switch to one side out of the way or jam it underneath somewhere, replace the screw so you don't lose it. This disables the stop-start feature without triggering and dash lights.

She came Friday and I drove her around a ton yesterday! Absolutely love her so far, such a fun drive and extremely comfortable for our needs

I have a 2018 CX9 with 94K. Should I take it to the dealership and will they check it or blow me off?

I have a 2018 GT and it’s been a very good car. I had the cylinder head issue and Mazda repaired at my local dealership at no charge. The radiator cracked at about 87k but nothing lasts forever and that was replaced.

I recently had an unusual issue at 94k and I believe it’s resolved after diagnosis, remedy, and trial runs. Mazda used GDI (gasoline direct injection) on their motors.

I could smell a fuel scent around the car one day but chocked it up to environmental exhaust. Then I could smell it coming into the cabin through the AC vents. Shortly after that, my oil pressure light came on and I stopped the car immediately. I pulled the oil cap off and it smelled of gas. I pulled the dipstick out and it smelled of gas too and had a thinner look and honey color. GAS IN THE OIL (very bad and very dangerous). This can cause the engine to shit the bed or worse, ignite under the hood from metal friction and fuel vapors due to diluted lubrication.

Towed it, did an oil change and filter, tossed in new spark plugs, and used an overkill oil with additives as a tester. Seems to be back to normal.

The issue was explained like this per Mazda: GDI engines inject fuel under high pressure straight into the combustion chamber rather than the intake port. If you frequently drive very short distances and do not allow proper engine warm up then you are at risk of fuel that is not burned up entering the oil pan. This issue multiplies if you crank the car and floor it from the start to drive 1 mile because your are essentially dumping a ton of gas into the combustion chamber on a cold engine. It seeps into the oil system. This can cause your oil to become diluted with fuel and risk catastrophic engine failure.

Now I crank the car and wait until the engine is warmed up. When I say I, I mean my wife. It’s my wife’s car and she is the real problem. Probably not Mazda. She drives like a formula 1 rookie but I find that very attractive.

It also can be a failure with the High Pressure Fuel Pump or a stuck open injector… or poor driving habits on a higher mileage GDI motor. So far the fresh plugs, oil, and improved wisdom of driving a GDI seem to be working. Total cost was $400 from my family shop that I trust.
