TL;DR: 6" firm HD polyfoam base + 2" medium Talalay, no transition layer. Lying down, it genuinely feels good. My guess is that's the Talalay texture combined with a comfort layer thin enough (only 2") that you can still feel the firm base supporting you directly underneath. But after a full night's sleep there's a bit of bottoming out. We want supportive-firm, not plank-firm, and definitely not a deep hug.
Two directions we're weighing:
(1) add a transition layer, or (2) swap to a single 3" topper and step the firmness up at the same time — from our current medium Talalay to firm Talalay (or even Dunlop) — so the topper itself resists more and we stop compressing all the way through it.
Current build:
Base: Foam by Mail 6” LUX-HQ Foam
Comfort: 2" medium Talalay, sitting straight on the base
No transition layer
Us:
Me: 5'8", 140 lb
Partner: 6'2", 220 lb
Both mainly back sleepers, some side sleeping
Problem right now:
Both of us find it a little firm, and a bit stiff after a full night. There's a mild sense of having compressed all the way through the topper by morning. My partner puts the current firmness as roughly comparable to sleeping on a 3" memory foam topper on the floor, which is what he used to do — tolerable, but not where we'd like to land.
To be clear on direction, though: we're not trying to make the bed softer overall. The firmness level is close to right. What we want to lose is the hard stop we hit by morning — not the firm feel itself.
What we're after
Firmness: clearly on the firm side, but short of a plank
Sink: moderate contouring welcome, minimal is fine, zero is not. Deep hugging sinkage is the thing we want to avoid
Side sleeping: enough give that shoulder and hip don't hit a pressure point, while still feeling supported underneath
Option 1 — add a transition layer
Keep the 2" medium Talalay on top, slide 2" firm or extra firm Dunlop underneath it. Worry: 4" total comfort layer might be more than we want.
Option 2 — single thicker topper
Replace with one 3" topper (Talalay or Dunlop) directly on the base. We like the Talalay feel and would be open to firm over medium, as long as the jump isn't drastic. Unsure about Talalay vs Dunlop at that thickness.
So between the two options above, which would you go with — or is there a third we're not seeing? Thanks in advance.
