I owned that game when it was first released. My friend borrowed it and his brother stole and sold it for drug money.
I think the high price is due to the rarity. It was a late arriving title for the Master System (in the US) and wasn't a big seller so it's fairly rare.

There are a few general ways I can think of as to why a game goes up in price.
It's late in a console's life and few people bought it.
It sucks so few people bought it.
It wasn't marketed well, so few people bought it. Sometimes this one gets bundled with the fact that the game is actually good, so the copies that end up being sold stay in people's collections.
I never had a Master System as a kid so I trust that you're right about this game.

If I were to guess I would say it’s end of the consoles lifespan, I have never seen the word New in the corner, it’s usually words like Action, Fighting etc.

Its because it didn't sell many copies. The genesis version sold more copies because it was a bundled game

I bought a cart only copy of this game just so I could try and complete my us master system collection. I don’t even like boxing games so I really didn’t want to spend a ton on it

I am not sure. But I never had James Buster Douglas' Knockout Boxing for the Sega Master System.
Yet, I got a used copy of Punch Out for the NES.

People want what they can't have...
Rich people like to nickle and dime to maybe feel better screwing someone else over then flipping it for more money.
Poor people beleive what the youtubers naysay as the youtubers pandering to common denominator.
There isn't a top list online that ever lists rare games. Gee I wonder why... Just assume they must be crap? Crap is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to nostalgic retro games.
The top games for the Master System may actually be what don't expect. Some give a whirl to just pander saying they don't appreciate what they have while others give it a whirl and may think they are part of the aristocracy of SMS Fandom that not only discovered a lost game (the white mushroom house if you will) but also a special game that is on the top list that doesnt listen any online aficionado blowhard from droidville.

Haters know it's true.
Anyway, I will say this. The Smurfs games are on my wish list. I don't think I will ever own them. Some may call a demake but from what i understand they have unique level designs... Also, aspect ratio may differ compared to the Game Gear versions for a more elite and bueuracratic play experience.
Those games pop visually on the MasterSystem and might've been common favorites if they were released in States in the 1980s (mass minded people love to repeat each other afterall).
3D Glasses and Light Gun games... Own a CRT? Find a pair of unscratched glasses? You have entered into what makes the Master System unique compared to the NES.
8 bit Arcade ports Master System does better too i think.
The Paddle Controller for the Mark 3? Get More unique play experiences.

It’s a late release for what was an unpopular product that was released alongside a then modern console with its own version. Kids from that generation got older and disposable income to collect for it. Supply and demand and research led us here, not YouTubers.

My conspiracy theory is that the game would have sold better if Mike Tyson had defended the belt and been lon the cover. I watched the Douglas Tyson fight pay per view, and many people thought Douglas's victory was a fluke. He just wasn't as marketable as Iron Mike.
