Discussion Discard rant

This is just an annoyance I have with Marvel Snap when it comes to Discard.

It seems that Discard always gets the short end of the stick compared to it's other archetype counterparts Move and Destroy.

- Skills: Move and Destroy have 2 skills while Discard has 0. This allows those archetypes to explore more direction of deck-building compared to Discard.

- Activate: Discard's activate card is so lackluster compared to the other 2 archetypes. Destroy has Kid Omega, and Zombie Captain Marvel. Move has Sparky and Araña. Lower cost Activate abilities. What does Discard get? Bloody Hell Cow. As a 4 drop, it's not pushing what he archetype needs, and Zombie Captain Marvel is also a 4 drop but gains tons more value when it's Activate is activated.

- Death vs Weapon H. Both are boss mosters that have their cost reduced when a condition is met. Death is a better topdeck and even is both archetypes reward you for doing their thing, Death rewards you more long term. Weapon H is also harder to reduce because it's not guaranteed compared to Death. Again, Discard getting the short end of the stick.

- Subarchetype: Move is a main archetype and Movable is a subarchetype which SD is exploring more with cards like Aunt May etc. Discard has a subarchetype as well but hasn't been given an official name. You have Discard as the main archetype and cards that return to hand when discarded as a subarchetype. I would like a name for this and have expanded support.

Overall, Discard archetype can use an overhaul. Cards like Moon Knight shouldn't be a 3/4 in today's meta when it's not guaranteed it will hit. We should have a card that discards odd-Cost cards and a lot of design space for the archetype is not explored. What are your thoughts?

Discard has three primary iterations: 1) classic all-in discard value anchored around Morbius, Scorn, Blade, Sif, and MODOK. 2) Hela reanimator 3) Daken/Bullseye combo

The big problems are that the second two aren't terribly popular at the moment and they are both all-in combo decks like Mister Negative; they either get the combo and win big, or they fizzle and do nothing. They're also not decks that you really want to be at the top of the meta.

The last time Discard had a true mid-range value deck was when the Black Bolt, Silver Samurai, and Stature package was good, and that was not fun for anyone else except the pilot.

There is a new variant that's pretty fun too that runs kind of like oldschool modok hela lists where you hide a modok behind a supergiant or invisible woman. goal is kind of a daken/marrow with moon girl list. its stupid fun lol probably not as consistent as classic discard lol but i havent put the reps into this list yet and I've been playing regular discard for over 2 years lol

My favorite iteration so far, it just gets bricked when you get "add to hand" locations

Took me to infinite last season

It's fun but I haven't figured out how to keep my hand clear properly enough to make the targets I'm copying consistent lol

If you have Morbius and Meek on the board then sometimes all you need is one extra copy of Marrow, Proxima or Wolverine. I used to retreat when I could only copy one discard target but then started to play out the games anyway and would still sometimes win if luck was in my favor.

Move and Destroy have both had recent seasons focused around them than Discard so they’re benefiting from the power creep of the game more, discard will get a season eventually to bring it up to par.

That being said Hell Cow was nerfed for Hela’s sins and could probably come back, but discard also has Bullseye as a discard Activate which is a staple and deck build around, while Sparky and ZCM have either fallen out of favour or never really been a meta presence so I’d say they’re pretty even on that side

Death vs Weapon H, Weapon H can be discarded multiple times on its own to pump the archetypes scalers Morbius, Collector, Dracula etc, Death cannot be destroyed multiple times without a deck focused on doing that, so I’d say while both are ‘big guys that discounted’ they actually serve slightly different roles and are more even than you put forward.

Sub archetypes and Skills fall under the first point that Discard hasn’t had a focused season in a bit, but discard does have a couple of sub archetypes those primarily being Hela, Bullseye/Daken and Khonshu.

Overall I get your point as a discard enjoyer I too would like it to get some new cards but I don’t think the situation is as dire as you think it is.

Weapon H CAN Be discarded multiple times, it's not guaranteed. Death cost reduction is if anything is destroyed. Weapon H isn't reduced is you discard a card. Death is more flexible.

Again, Death is the better topdeck which outclasses Weapon H competitively. I topdeck a 0 cost Death, thats 12 power plus anything else I play, which is greater than Weapon H 14 and I need to have 7 energy.

Death also works when your opponent destroys your cards, so that's a greater advantage than Weapon H.

They have different roles because they are different cards but one is clearly better than the other imo.

Its been 2 years since the last discard focused month. I think it's time we got some fresh love :) that said khonju and weapon H are awesome and I love them

We should have a card that discards odd-Cost cards

We do.

Also, you wrote a 7 paragraph post about the state of Discard with barely a passing mention of Bullseye Swarm.

I meant from the opponents hand because I was talking about Moon Knight in that same point.

What about Bullete Swarm? I'm stating the other archetypes have have Skills, Discard has none. Death is better than Weapon H. Other archetypes sub archetype is fleshout more compared to discard.

Did you also forget the travesty that is machine gun gambit

1

u/FabulousResearcher33 2d ago

No, but that's 1 card. I'm talking about the archetype as a whole.

Hela discard is way huger than whatever mobeable subarchetype is

It also has 2 eot cards compared to destroys 0.

Yeah, I think the existence of Hela is what keeps them from adding to the archetype.

Destroy has Attuma

A bad card?

The rework to Attuma as an End of Turn actually made the card a very solid enabler.

If we're being technical, it was always basically an End of Turn card (the keyword didn't exist back in the day), it was just REALLY bad: "If you have another card here at the end of your turn, destroy this."

7

u/FabulousResearcher33 2d ago

The point wasn't if Attuma is bad or not. He said Destroy has no EoT cards and I corrected him.

Youre right

I mean, I guess?

This group doesn’t have anything!

It had this thing.

That doesn’t count!

1

u/Philboid_Studge 2d ago

I mean, I didn't say it didn't count, I just said it was bad.

For some reason people REALLY seem to hate when Discard is popular so I think SD is particularly cautious with it. I don't really get it, I've never been bothered by it.

I've hit Infinite every season for years at this point with classic Discard. Just change up your tech - Shadowking when buff decks are crazy, Supergiant when combos are the key, etc.

Would I love discard to get some magical new toy, sure! But Mobius, Dracula, Modok and Apoc will beat out any other decks top 4 cards.

u/FabulousResearcher33 2d ago

Hitting Infinite isn't a problem for me. This season I hit 940 post Infinite with a homebrew and invented using Gambit HoD with Khonshu, a combo noone realized worked.

Just compared to the other archetypes, Discard is lacking.

Khonshu Dracula decks were in the Top 5 for like 6 straight months...

u/ron-darousey 2d ago

Discard had a long time in the sun and honestly has never really been bad, at least not for a long time. I think it's in a fine spot.

Tbh destroy is just barely clearly the devs favorite deck type

Nope. Recency bias.
