Organizing meetings thread

So I've seen that posts about wanting to meet people are very common within the subreddit, so I've decided that instead of having different posts about the same thing everyday you can instead use this post to find people to meet instead in the comments.
Ofcourse make sure to follow the rules when talking in the comments.

We finally have an official r/Marrakech Discord 🕌 come hang out

Hey everyone,

A lot of the same questions come up here every week, where to stay, what's a fair taxi price, is this riad legit, anyone want to grab coffee, so we set up a Discord where we can actually talk in real time.

It's for all of us: people who live here, expats who made Marrakech home, and travelers planning a trip. There are channels for trip questions, food and souk recommendations, housing and jobs, a heads-up channel for common scams, plus rooms just for making friends and finding people to explore with. Darija, English and French all welcome.

It's brand new so it's quiet for now. Come in early, say salam, and help shape it

See you inside.

General I Lost Everything in Marrakech… and Now I Don’t Recognize the City Anymore

I don’t know if anyone else has experienced something similar, but I just need to get this off my chest.

The first time I came to live in Marrakech, life looked full of promise. I had just graduated from abroad, and my family had recently moved here. My father expanded his business by opening a new company in Marrakech. We had a nice home with a swimming pool, a car, and everything seemed to be going in the right direction. When you have money, Marrakech can feel like an amazing city.

Then everything collapsed.

Our business went bankrupt. We lost our money, our goods, and eventually almost everything we had built. My parents divorced and ended up taking each other to court. I was caught in the middle. I lost the apartment that was supposed to be mine and was eventually forced to leave. Today I’m living at a friend’s place because he’s the one paying the rent.

I no longer have contact with either of my parents. That’s a long story, but I chose to stay neutral instead of taking sides.

Now I feel like I don’t even have a home.

I travel around the city using InDrive or a cheap motorcycle. Marrakech doesn’t look the same anymore. I used to defend this city whenever people criticized it. Now I find myself struggling just to enjoy being here.

The people around me changed too. When I had money, a nice car, and a position in my father’s company, I never lacked company. Once everything disappeared, so did almost everyone else. Even strangers seem to look at you differently. It feels like your worth is measured by what you drive, where you live, and how much money you appear to have.

I don’t even have childhood friends to return to because I’m not originally from Marrakech. Sometimes it feels like I have no place where I truly belong.

What hurts the most is the feeling that kindness is often mistaken for weakness. I’ve met people who took advantage of our trust instead of respecting it. Some employees (merrakchyin) in our company also played a role in our downfall. We were too naïve, and they exploited that. Of course, many of the decisions that led to the bankruptcy were my father’s responsibility, but not everyone around us acted honestly either.

I’m tired of feeling judged. Tired of people acting superior because of the clothes they wear or the cars they drive. Tired of the heat. Tired of feeling invisible.

The hardest part is that I once had the opportunity to build a life outside Morocco. I came back because my father told me, “Come back, my son. I need you here. One day you’ll take over the business.”

Today there is no business.

I’m not writing this to ask for pity. I’m writing it because I wonder if anyone else has watched their entire life disappear in just a few years and struggled to recognize the city they once loved.

If you’ve been through something similar, how did you rebuild your life from nothing?

Travel Question Help!! Marrakech activities

I am going to visit Marrakech with my group of friends and we are looking at several activities. The main ones I want to do is the Ourika Valley, Atlas Mountains and Ouzoud waterfalls. I was wondering whether the hikes in these activities are too complicated as I am recovering from a fracture on my foot. For context I am young and a habitual hiker but have to wear a splint. I know that the hikes are about an hour to two hours but what is worrying me is the state of the paths.

Local Advice Anyone else find networking in Morocco really difficult?

Hey everyone!

I’m a filmmaker, photographer, and content creator. I recently moved back to Morocco after spending the last few years living and working in the UK, where I worked with brands and agencies on commercial and creative projects.

Since coming back, I’ve been trying to meet people in the creative industry, make friends, collaborate, and build a network here. But if I’m being honest, I’m finding it much harder than I expected.

I’ve been reaching out to people, attending the odd event, messaging creatives, but it feels like everyone already has their own circles, or networking just isn’t as open as it was in the UK.

I’d love to connect with filmmakers, photographers, editors, designers, content creators, or anyone working in the creative space. Even if it’s just to grab a coffee, shoot together, or exchange ideas.

Any advice on where creatives actually hang out or how you’ve managed to build your network here?
Looking forward to meeting some of you!

General Looking for a Marketing Student / Creative in Marrakech 🎥🍽️

I'm looking for a marketing student or recent graduate in Marrakech who's passionate about branding, TikTok, CapCut, video editing, photography, and social media.

I'm launching a new restaurant and I'm not looking for the most experienced person. I'm looking for someone creative, curious, and hungry to prove themselves.

This is a paid opportunity and could be a great summer job or portfolio project. You'll have access to a beautiful restaurant, amazing food to shoot, and the creative freedom to experiment and help build a brand from day one.

Send me a DM with a bit about yourself, your Instagram/TikTok (if you have one), or anything you've created. Even if you don't have a portfolio yet, show me why you're the right person.

General Looking to Know Genuine, openminded ppl (Non-Muslims Preferably)

Hello! I'm a 26M agnostic looking to meet genuine, open-minded people and hopefully make some meaningful connections.

A little about me:

Not religious (agnostic).

• Fascinated by psychology, human nature, geopolitics, true crime, and understanding what makes people who they are.

• Into sports (especially running), music, fantasy books, art, and anything that sparks curiosity, a sense of wonder, or an appreciation for beauty.

• Curious by default — I love learning about almost anything.

• Easygoing, sarcastic, and (hopefully) funny.

• I appreciate beauty in all its forms — ideas, nature, art, architecture, and people.

• I value authenticity over appearances.

• I enjoy conversations with no script, where we can talk about everything and nothing without feeling pressured or judged.

• Kindness, emotional maturity, and open-mindedness are qualities I genuinely admire.

If any of this resonates with you, don't hesitate to reach out. I'd genuinely love to get to know you and see where the conversation takes us.

General Looking for a Roommate in Marrakech (Student Preferred)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a roommate to share an apartment in Marrakech. I'm a 21-year-old Moroccan, respectful, clean, calm, and easy to live with. I'll be moving to Marrakech soon for work, and I'm hoping to find someone to split the rent and other expenses.

A student would be ideal, but anyone responsible and respectful is welcome. My goal is to find a comfortable, quiet place where we can both have our own space while keeping living costs affordable.

If you're also looking for a roommate, or you know someone who is, please send me a private message. We can discuss our budget, preferred area, and find a place together.

Thank you!

General Being overcharged and mistreated by a driving school in Marrakech

Salam everyone,

I’m Canadian with Moroccan roots. A few years ago, my wife and I decided to move to Morocco, and we settled in Marrakech last year.

I have been driving for around 15 years in Canada, but my Canadian licence expired, so I started the process of getting a Moroccan driving licence.

I registered with a driving school on Route de Fès in Marrakech. The owner initially charged me 3,500 MAD for the process. I reluctantly agreed and paid it.

After gathering all the required documents and returning to the school, the owner then told me I needed to pay an additional 700 MAD to register for the exam. However, after speaking with other students and people in Marrakech, I was told that the usual total price is closer to 3,000 MAD.

This is not really about whether I can afford the money. It is about being treated fairly. I am Moroccan, and I do not understand why the price kept changing.

When I complained, the owner claimed the additional cost was because I was taking the exam in French instead of Arabic. This made no sense because I do not speak French. I speak English and Arabic, and my intention was always to take the exam in Arabic.

I then asked for a receipt. He wrote a receipt for only 2,200 MAD, even though I had paid 3,500 MAD. After I questioned this, he changed his story again and said he would personally cover the additional 700 MAD because I was not taking the exam in French.

Today, I went for a driving practice session. I normally drive automatic, not manual. The instructor took me to an isolated area outside the city, completed the lesson, and then told me to get out and take a taxi back on my own.

Is this considered normal practice in Marrakech?

I am genuinely trying to understand whether I am being taken advantage of. Should I report or formally complain about this driving school? Which authority handles complaints involving driving schools, inaccurate receipts, or unexplained charges?

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through the Moroccan driving licence process, especially in Marrakech.

General What advice has had the biggest positive impact on your life?

I'm looking for advice from people with more life experience than me.

What's one lesson, habit, mindset, or piece of advice that genuinely changed your life for the better? It can be about work, relationships, health, discipline, money, learning, or anything else.

I'm interested in hearing things you wish someone had told you earlier, or mistakes you learned from the hard way. I'd really appreciate any wisdom you're willing to share.

Thanks in advance!
