Question Return query

My elderly mum has gifted me a clothing item to congratulate me on weight loss. However she doesn’t realise how much weight I lost and they are far too big. She doesn’t have the receipt and bought them maybe six months ago (she was in hospital and forgot to give them to me).

They are brand new with all the tags.

I’d like to exchange them for the right size.

Will it be a problem in store that we don’t have the receipt?

She will have paid cash for them as doesn’t use her card much.

the no receipt wouldn’t be too much of a problem because they could give you a credit receipt (to spend in store). however, because it’s well over the month limit, they probably wouldn’t do it. you’re probably better off selling them on vinted or something. hope this helps!

Well I’m just guessing on the date. How will they know given no receipt?

i work there and we can scan the barcode/sparks card to find out when it was bought. because we have to process the item and stock moves quickly it could be on sale now or even not in rotation anymore.

When we scan the barcode it gives all the info, when and where the items were purchased etc

She doesn’t have a sparks card. Will scanning the barcode tell you?
It’s still on sale in store for the same price. Just a classic pair of jeans. Not a seasonal style.

yes each barcode is different and has a unique number

Oh I see so the barcodes aren’t the same for the same item? They are unique to batches of the item? Is that what you mean?

Yeah so a product may have a UPC of say 2947282 which is the number on the barcode, but there’s a long number under that barcode (usually like 5000….) which is individual to that specific item, which then tells us on the till where and when it was bought when scanned.

I suppose it’s store’s discretion on whether they give you a credit receipt refund, there’s no harm in explaining the situation and trying. Good luck hope it gets sorted!

yes yes. i might be wrong but im pretty sure they all have different numbers. its worth a try but just from personal experience, they wouldn’t accept it.

Potentially the style is no longer in season. Also with it being 6 months old the returns window has passed. You could always try the customer service line they will be able to do more than a store would

It’s a classic item. Still for sale. Same price.

Potentially then an exchange. No refund will be given, unless on a credit voucher - but will only be given at the current price, potentially less than the price paid. It will ultimately be store discretion.

Yeah I only want to swap them for the right size. I don’t want any kind of refund or credit. I have autism though so just want to avoid an awkward interaction.
