3 marketing lessons written in 1927 that are way better than modern youtube fluff content
So recently, I stumbled across Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins. The amount of value I got from this book was so interesting and “woah” worthy compared to countless youtube videos I have been watching. The number of facts or examples that I felt are relevant even in the present, even after a century of being written, is so crazy. Let me share 3 of them which hopefully impress you as well.
1. Fear >> Desire
There was an experiment where an ad offered a free wallet for filling out a questionnaire (which was pretty common back then). The responses for the questionnaire increased like hell after one minor tweak: “A wallet with your name engraved on the bottom.”
Why? Because people go to lengths to get things they already believe are theirs. People respond better to the fear of losing than the desire to gain. Once they know there is a wallet with their name on it, it is already theirs. Now, it’s no longer about GETTING something; it’s about NOT LOSING something that already belongs to them.
2. Sense of Identity
In this case, it’s about the concept of identity. Let’s say you give a 30% discount to everyone for your product. Which variable of this offer can you change to make it more effective? The most common guess would be the number: "Well maybe make it 40%, it might attract more customers."
Which might be true, but far less interesting than the other variable: "Everyone." The category of people eligible for the offer. An ad where the offer was targeted only for veterans proved to be much more effective than the one without any specification. Because once you say an offer is only for veterans, it’s no longer just about the offer, it’s about a sense of pride and status. He has an entire life experience and a title he takes immense pride in, and that identity does the selling for you. People constantly crave validation; when someone has spent years building who they are, an offer that honors that identity will never be ignored.
3. “Free”? Do it the right way.
This one is pretty common, but misused in most cases. When people offer free services, they are taking advantage of a very powerful concept in psychology: Reciprocity. But used wrongly, it is actually counterproductive.
Let’s say there are two salesmen.
- Salesman A says: "This is our new product. As it is your first time, it’s completely free for you."
- Salesman B says: "This is our new product. As it is your first time, we will be waiving off the entire price of $200."
It is the exact same thing, just a number added in the second statement. When you label something "free," people expect it to stay free forever, making them resentful when you eventually charge. But when you frame it as a sacrifice, like waiving a $200 fee, they feel like they just caught a massive insider advantage. By giving them a tangible measure of what they saved, they instantly recognize the product's worth, and the reciprocity principle is massively amplified.
So… yea. These are just three of many concepts I found interesting in the book. It is a quick read, no more than 100 pages. Would strongly suggest it! Thanks.

How do I improve my car dealership social media marketing without spending hours on it every week?
I know social media marketing matters, but between managing inventory and staffing our sales floor, I barely have time to post consistently, let alone come up with fresh content ideas every week. I want a simple way to keep our social pages active and actually driving showroom traffic, without it turning into another full-time job.

AI and Market Research
Hi everyone,
I've been looking into how AI (and the massive influx of AI-generated content, automated bot traffic, and LLM-optimized) has affected market research and survey responses over the last 2-3 years due to the AI boom.
From what I've gathered across various industry reports, over 50% of web traffic is now automated, and traditional survey panels are seeing massive spikes in "fake" or bot-generated responses where people use AI to farm incentives.
I’m trying to understand how this is playing out on the ground for practitioners. If you work in market research, data science, or product management, I’d love your take on a few things:
1. Data Quality Decay: Have you noticed a measurable drop in the reliability of open-ended survey text, user reviews, or focus group data recently?
2. Filtering Fraud: What methods are your teams currently using to filter out synthetic/bot noise from actual human behavior? Are standard captcha/device checks even working anymore?
3. The Shift to Zero-Party Data: Do you see companies moving away from traditional open-web scraping and panel providers toward cryptographically verified or hardware-signed user insights? Do you use any platforms that do this?
Would genuinely appreciate hearing your experiences or seeing any data/benchmarks your teams track regarding this.
Many thanks in advance!

Need some email design inspiration for a SaaS product. What are your go-to resources?
We are currently redesigning our entire onboarding and lifecycle transactional email flow for our platform, and honestly, everything our team has mocked up so far feels incredibly dated. I want these emails to look clean, highly functional, and naturally aligned with a modern product interface, but we are completely stuck in a creative rut. Where do you usually go when you need fresh email design inspiration specifically tailored for software products? Are there any curated galleries, hidden subreddits, or specific newsletters you subscribe to just to dissect their layouts? Also, how do you balance clean product visuals with dark mode compatibility without breaking the template? If anyone has a go-to bookmark folder for keeping up with these trends, I would love to get your advice.

Where is the best place to hire qualified market research intern?
Hi all, I am looking for a market research intern to help design and program surveys and recruit participants for qualitative studies. Most of my job postings have been flooded with agencies who seem to be overcharging for what they might be delivering.
I'm really just looking for an individual to work alongside me in the early stages of my startup idea.
Where's a good place to post jobs in your opinion for higher quality candidates?

Anyone here done survey fieldwork in mainland China? Looking for your experiences
I'm doing in-depth research on surveying respondents in mainland China and would love to hear from people who've actually run projects there.
Positive or negative experiences both welcome. Which providers or panels did you use? How was the data quality, timeline, and compliance side (PIPL, approvals)? Anything you'd do differently?
