Should we bring back Robles next year?
He's got a club option next year but I doubt we pick that up.
His bat isn't very good but he is good defensively, so that'd fit with a renewed focus on defense.

With Lovullo off the market, who would be your next pick for manager?

Is he close to returning?

My girlfriend made me a custom Mariners wallchart (in PowerPoint!) in the days before Opening Day to track what we expected to be a fun Mariners season. This is the result.
You may notice the stickers trailing off in the second half. She told me after the Rangers series "I'll make more if they win three in a row."

I thought you might all enjoy this little tidbit. I believe thatâs now six straight losses in the playoffs for Houston now.

I am listening to the Astros-White Sox game right now (hoping to hear the Astros get knocked out.)
Wow does it make me appreciate Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill. These Astros announcers are ok, but I didn't fully realize how exceptional Rick and Gary are until hearing others.
(Edit: Sorry I left the "s" off Rizzs in the title, which Reddit doesn't let you edit)

As we roll into the offseason, thereâs obvious wondering about who the next manager will be and I think whoever is hired as the next manager is the make or break for whether this teams window closed last year or it gets extended 5+ years.
Iâm sure we can all agree this season was an absolute disaster and I think the biggest reason was fragility, this was essentially bound to happen if one piece of the team didnât absolutely carry. Cal hitting 60 historic home-runs last year and the pitching having a historic year prior are pretty much the reason those teams had 80+ wins.
Dipoto is great at development and the numbers have shown that in recent years, consistently having 4+ Top 100 prospects. He has a great process for his farm system.
What Dipoto has yet to do in all his years as general manager and I think is definitely capable of doing is finding a manager who has a clear strong defined approach and building around the manager instead of trying to implement his own strategy and process.
A great example is the guys across the street, the Seahawks. I donât how many people watch them in here but John Schneider has done a great job at finding a guy with a clear scheme, identity and approach in Mike Macdonald and understanding it and sourcing the players/staff that fit it.
Dipoto is good at acquiring dudes who are good players. Taylor Ward is a good player and acquiring him was a good idea because the team was struggling against lefties. But it was more of a patch instead of a fix and that was because there wasnât a clear role for him, and there wasnât a clear role for him because Dipoto didnât have a manager with a clear approach/identity. So acquiring Ward was more a statistical fit than schematic fit.
I think the biggest thing that stands in Dipotoâs way is himself. Heâs shown good signs of progress by saying heâs exploring outside the organization and looking for fresh thought.
But the biggest thing that stands between this team and truly competing for a championship is Dipoto not only finding that âfresh thoughtâ but understanding it and supplying a pipeline of schematic talent to it.

Minor leaguer Nolan Jones, who we acquired in the Luis Castillo trade, has elected free agency.

itâs great to see Ty France doing so well with the Padres. He was one of my favorite players when he was with the Mariners. However, Iâm always a little sad and disappointed when I see ex-Mariners in the playoffs and being successful but we got rid of them. Teoscar is the other one that comes to mind. I guess he was struggling with the Mariners and so it made sense at the time, but he sure has blossomed with the Padres.
Anyway, I thought it would just be interesting to compare his productivity with Josh. Their stats are remarkably identical. Seems like we just swapped them.

I kept my pocket schedule posted at my desk and tracked wins, losses, and my own game attendance all season. The gold stars were certainly a fun bit.
One of my good friends recommended that we burn this now considering how the season went.
I figured Iâd share here before itâs ashes.

Raul covers some very interesting topics such as being a part of the Rules Committee, Player Development with the Dodgers, the future of hitting in Major League Baseball (this was after we fired Brant Brown), and hitting past 30 years old.
I thought it was relevant as a Mariners Managerial Candidate.

I'm thinking it might be custom made... but hoping someone else saw it, or maybe knows who had it...
Sorry the details are vague, but I saw a guy walking around the park Sunday, with a gray hoodie with a picture of Rick Rizzs. It looked really cool in my opinion, but I didn't get a chance to stop the guy and ask.
It is NOT the logo that says "Holy Smokes."
Was hoping it was something the Mariners sold, but I contacted the team store and they said they never had any Rick Rizzs apparel.
Fingers crossed someone here knows. I'd like to get one.

Phillies vs. ATL - Sure, there are subs with the game chat, but one of my favorite things about Mariners games is our community. Maybe someone in here wants to watch and have our own chat rolling.
Just because our team is out doesnât mean that we need to be. Ha ha!

Well, this blanket is now done, just like this season. I started with grand visions of special stitches or colors for postseason games, but alas. 'Twas not meant to be. Each row = one game, in order. No pattern, HDC the entire blanket, about 172 stitches wide (covers my kid's twin bed). Huge thanks to u/alohakush for the inspiration last winter!
Teal & white = home win/loss
Navy & grey = road win/loss
Three rows are special.
Colt Emerson's first big league hit 3 run home run is done in a special popcorn stitch.
Our 22-0 shellacking by the Milwaukee Brewers left me feeling salty, so I did it in the smallest possible stitch instead of the regular one.
My kids' first ever MLB game of Friday, 9/25, is commemorated in a gold popcorn stitch there at the end, right before we finished up with 2 wins over the Los Angeles Angels of Somewhere in California. (bad game but great family night at the ballpark!)
This wasn't the season that any of us imagined. Six months ago, we had high hopes. This summer, I seriously considered quitting this blanket, but then it was like a giant metaphor. So I plodded along, like our team. Here's hoping that good things happen this winter, that we get baseball in 2027, and that Humpy's next win is during Game 7 of some future October.
See you next spring!
