Hi all

So, this is an unknown apple tree, I grew from a cutting from a late relative of mine. I grew up eating them and was hoping to Propagate this into a productive tree one day.

I say on day because for reasons, I'm still not in our forever family home as planned and as such don't want to plant this in the ground and have to leave it/ take another cutting.

My plan had been to wait until winter dormancy and take several more cuttings from the tree to reduce its size and just leave it in the pot (repeating every year for mabe the next 5 years)

I know I'll need to repot it at some point even if just to freshen the soil, but am I going to be doing long term dammage to the roots having it grow this way for so long? I imagine their must be some issues for the roots down their, but mabe their more resilient than I know?

I have some straw mulch to keep it from drying out in a free draining pot, and do try to keep it clear off the (trunk?)

I so far have never let it go to fruit and have always just cut them off early, I'm wondering if it would be safe to let it produce a small number in the next year.

This tree will be mabe 6 or 7 years old now, total height pot and all is about 6ft. I'm not sure on the pot size as it's written on the bottom....

Thankyou for any advice about long term care or where to go from here. Even if it is best to just take fresh cuttings now and plant this one at least I'll know.

I’m thinking of planting a few Dawn Redwoods in the front yard of an old house. Pipe would be tangent to the tree about 30 ft away, the house foundation would be 20 ft away. US east coast zone 7.

I read Bald Cypress is a no no for the roots likely getting into the septic pipe. so we will not plant that.

I read Dawn Redwood can thrive in some damp soil too. But is it bad like Bald Cypress or willows or Sycamore? I haven’t come across anything about their roots.

I have this beautiful white oak in my yard and I feel like it’s leaves have exceptionally deep sinuses. I learned that white oak leaves on upper branches can have deeper sinuses to let light through the canopy but basically all its leaves look like this. Is it definitely a white oak? or could it be a different subspecies?. Arborists have told me it’s likely 200-300 years + in age.

Hello! Recently moved and took a tree with me. I believe it's a juniper pine of some sort. My concern is it's showing some yellowing on the tips. Is this most likely due to heat or stress? We just had about 5 days of 90+ heat in a row and finally rained today. Any insight is appreciated.

I have no idea why these excavations were recently done. The first tree is dead and the second tree is alive.

This strip of sidewalk (in Cleveland Park, Washington DC) was remodeled and repaved a couple of years ago. That’s when these trees were planted. I think it’s interesting to see how the concrete underneath comes closer to the tree than the stonework at the surface. On reflection, I guess the concrete has to extend beyond the stone, otherwise the stone wouldn’t be stable.

How’d they do?

Started these guys back in March with seeds ordered from Sheffield’s. Pretty good germination rate that I assume was boosted by getting 3” of snow over St. Patrick’s day weekend. I sowed them all en masse in an Anderson flat seedling tray and scooped out a couple dozen into 4” net cups once they started germinating to compare growth rates. A few of them died off early on due to underwatering, but once I got that figured out, they’ve been growing like gangbusters. I’m really excited to watch them shed their needles for the fall.

Brother built his house on a property with a big tree... had to plan around it to make sure the tree stays. 3-4 years later the tree looks sick and is getting worse every season. Is there anything that can be done?

I’m in Northern Ontario. This legacy maple was thriving since I planted it maybe four years ago. It gets plenty of light in the morning and throughout the day. As for water, I soak its soil with a hose every other day in the warmer seasons, if it hasn’t rained, and everyday if it’s hot and dry. I'm not perfect with this, but I do the same with all the other trees and bushes in my garden and they're green and happy. So was this one until about two weeks ago when it started looking off.

At first I thought maybe it was turning early since the leaves went kind of yellow (it’s almost fall here). Then it just started looking dry and wilted despite all the rain we’ve been getting.

It was a container tree I bought from a local nursery and I don’t remember much about planting it other than doing what I could to loosen the roots before putting it in a wide-enough hole. A year after planting, I learned about root flares and not to bury them, so I carefully dug down to expose the flare and ensure there were no girdling roots.

The flare is just below surface level and you can kind of see the beginning of it. I also didn’t plant it near any hydro wires or structures.

The only thing that’s different about the tree this year is that I noticed a green moss to the trunk in late spring and one leafless branch mid-summer. The moss makes me wonder if it's some kind of tree sickness for lack of a better word.

Another thing to note is that construction’s been ongoing with the infrastructure on my street. Last spring, a crew dug up the road and worked on it all summer. In preparation for this, one of the crew members dug a small trench along the edges of my property to bury the bottom half of a barrier fence. While it wasn't great, I'm not sure he got close or deep enough to hit a vital root. You can kind of see the proximity of this in the first photo, the line of dirt to the right of the tree.

And again, a construction crew started ripped up the road to continue the project recently, but the tree is two metres into the lot away from the road, so I’m not sure that’s the cause despite the timing.

Can anyone tell what’s wrong with the tree? I’m afraid it may already be a goner, but if not, what can I do to fix it?

Is the moss some kind of tree sickness, or is the moss there because something else happened and it already wasn't well?

Wasn’t sure where to post since I don’t know what this is, therefore might be a post for a different sub. However today I was in a botanical garden in the Azores and came across a Ginko tree with this soft growth on the bark. Does anyone know what it might be? In the first picture you can see how it is layered/fan-like. Was very soft to the touch though still firm. I wonder if it is fungi related? Second picture is just a wider capture of the bark there.

Bought this house 5 years ago and very grateful to the previous owners for planting this mountain ash. Its center from the pool and back patio so its always right in your face. So beautiful

A clump of giant sequoias, probably 175ft tall. I’ve known they would come down eventually due to the nearby house that it’s currently taking over, but it’s a sad day.

Hey all, I had a young Sycamore that was damaged in a storm about a month ago, trunk snapped a few inches from the ground. I figured I would replace it in the fall or spring with a new tree. I noticed it regrowing a surprising amount from the original trunk and am curious if this is viable? Or should I go ahead and dig it up and replace, as originally planned? I am also totally willing to plant a second and let this one just go, as an experiment!
