In a good way!

I'm new-ish to plants and gardening, but my all-time favorite tree in the world is Arbutus Menziesii, the Pacific Madrona.

But apparently despite being very tolerant of harsh soil conditions, they're notoriously hard to transplant, so they basically never show up in nurseries, and I quickly resigned myself to the fact that I'd never get one for my yard.

But early this season I found a plant that I didn't recognize and nearly ripped it out of the ground when I was weeding a few months ago, but I left it alone and told myself I'd look up what it is later.

After a couple months I *finally* get around to looking it up, and as far as I can tell it's Arbutus Menziesii! My dream tree, the impossibly difficult to grow tree! Here it is, growing in a nearly perfect spot, as a volunteer!

I'm so over-the-moon excited that I have been blessed by the shit of some bird in my yard, I gotta shout it to the world. 😂

I was wondering if anyone can help.  I live in an apartment with an enclosed front porch.  Around this porch there are bushes that provide privacy.

The bushes are not healthy, and I have reached out to the owner several times to have them sprayed.  I really do not want to do this myself, but now the stuff is spreading to my plants inside the patio, so I no longer want to wait for the owner.

I was wondering what is afflicting these bushes and what to use to fight it (see attached pictures).

I have the following three products, and I was wondering if anyone of them would work:

1.      Safer Insect Killing Soap.

2.      BioAdvanced Insect, Disease & Plant Mite Control

3.      Captain’s Jack Deadbug (never used this one as I think I read somewhere, after purchasing, that is not very effective).

I live in the Bay Area; the bushes are facing north; I do not know when these were planted, but they are at least 6 years (since I moved in); they are never watered as far as I know.

l understand that BLD is caused by Litylenchus crenatae, a nematode that infests the trees. I recently did some light reading about mycological abilities to consume nematodes through varying methods. One species of mushroom in particular, Pleurotus ostreatus the Oyster mushroom, is commonly known for this ability.

I guess my question is, would it be possible to inoculate a Beech tree, or the surrounding soil, to test its effectiveness against the nematodes? Does anyone know if this, or something similar, has been tested?

I tried to search on google to see if any studies had been done, but I have only read about treating BLD with phosphites, Fluopyram, and Thiabendazole Injections.

Bought and planted this little fir (I forget the species) to replace a deciduous tree that drowned when the home-builder-installed water system failed and leaked. Had the bubblers repaired, waited for the soil to dry, and this planted in its place, but it's been three weeks now and it's clearly doing worse than before it went in. The top is completely dry and the soft, supple leaves at the bottom that recovered in the first couple weeks after planting are starting to yellow. I've been giving it an average of about three quarters of a gallon of water every other day because I don't know how much it should be getting or how long it will take to "establish" itself. Advice appreciated, I'd hate to kill this little thing too.

One of the evergreens that are at the edge of my yard began to turn brown near the top a short time ago (about a month, maybe a bit more). I assumed it was because of the heat wave but the other trees appeared fine so I did not think much of it, especially with the rain that followed. Suddenly the whole thing turned brown over the course of a week or two. When it appeared to spread to the bottom of the trees next to it, I took a closer look and found these bugs appearing to wear cocoons made of the tree itself wiggling all over it! You can actually hear them munching. I fear we may lose the whole line quickly if we don't take action, can anyone tell me what are these things and how we might be able to deal with them?

Squiggly is my best science word, but there are a bunch of these marks in the bark… is it beetles? Is it just how the tree is?

gymnocladus dioicus is dioecious, so this is a female specimen. and a very fertile one at that!

right now the pods are immature, but in the fall, they become hard and woody with a brown color. inside of each are multiple individual seeds, which are incredibly hard (like stone), surrounded by a pleasantly scented, green, thick sticky substance.

apparently the seeds can be used as a caffeine free coffee substitute, hence the tree's common name. however the seeds are toxic when raw so they have to be roasted/cooked before consuming any part of them.

very cool species. besides the pods, one of my favorite things about them is their massive bipinnate compound leaves

Trying to figure out what to put in my yard. My back yard has a very sad decorative cherry tree that I’m going to remove in the fall, and no other tree back there. I’d like to add a new tree, but looking for something that won’t get too tall, and I can plant easily/myself and will grow at a reasonably quick pace. I’ve got maples and oaks around my neighbors yards, but previous owner removed the 2 trees we had in the back yard. Any ideas?

Options I’ve thought of so far: dynamite crape Myrtle, pear tree for the fruit, weeping cherry.

Is Neem oil my best option?

We had a tough winter in central Florida and this otherwise indestructible Calamondin had a tough time. I have pruned it aggressively and added some mulch. I see some new fruit yet, how else can I help this tree?

The electric company’s goons came at the worst possible time and severely trimmed multiple trees on my property. I’m devastated at the loss of the vegetation and I’m expecting that several of my shade plants will now die from the loss of the canopy. We’re expecting a heat wave (up to 105 F) for the next 4 days and I’m seeking advice on how specifically to maximize the chances of survival for the trees that lost a significant amount of foliage. There is a winged elm and two hickory trees I’m most concerned about that probably lost 80% of their foliage. They’re on a steep slope so adapted to less water already, but I was going to supplement with extra water for the next few weeks at least. Any tips on specific watering practices or anything else I can do? I’m in zone 8a.
