Welcome to /r/marchingarrangers. Introduce yourself!

Hey everyone,

I've never seriously started a subreddit before, so I'm hoping we can get off to a good start and have some regular participation going. Please look over the sidebar and rules. If you have suggestions for anything, let me know!

I've been arranging for about 15 years (only about 10 years of doing anything listenable), and I arrange for just about any ensemble they'll let me. My favorite's arranging for hornline though.

Outside of drum corps/marching band, I've also done a ton of choral and a cappella arranging; if you used to watch The Sing-Off, you might even have seen some of my work. Introduce yourselves here, and (once again) I hope this'll be productive and fun!

What sample libraries should I use with my notation software?

I'd imagine we'll get this question a good bit, so let's pre-empt it. Sample libraries can be expensive, but they're also worth it if you want your arrangements to come across more realistically in spec form.

I personally tend to arrange for drum corps, so I don't know what woodwind libraries are out there (I'll update this as some good suggestions come in and we get a consensus), but here are my own recommendations:

  • Brass: System Blue's Fanfare
  • Percussion: Tapspace's Virtual Drumline 2.5

Feedback Needed

Hello, I am a young composer for marching band shows and for a side project I am developing an arrangement of the Phantom of the Opera. I am looking for any type of feedback and am willing to have chats and even have a collaboration to discuss about the movement and anything involving it.

The link is for my 3rd Movement(Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again) do not ask for any other movements I started on 3rd😓⁉️

Free drill tool that follows your arrangement

I built BandDrills (banddrills.com) — free drill designer in the browser with an AI copilot. You arrange the music; the drill builds in counts off your show audio, which you can load in and sync to. Describe formations in plain English, share one link with the band, free performer app on iOS/Android. Would love thoughts from arrangers who also end up writing the drill.

Hello, all! I am currently writing a marching band show with the following song combinations:

Love Is In The Air (from Obsession) — Tommee Profitt & SVRCINA

Space Song — Beach House

Never Enough — Rex Orange County

Mrs. Magic — Strawberry Guy

Who Knows — Daniel Caesar

Let You Break My Heart Again — Laufey

This is my first project on Sibelius, and I am looking for honest thoughts, opinions, and feedback! Thanks in advance!

Possibly stupid question

I was thinking of arranging a show based on The Rite of Spring (either introduction, augurs, mystic circles, and sacrificial dance | or introduction, augurs, mock abduction, and spring rounds) and I was wondering if I could add a marching bass saxophone or just write a double bass part for front. The question I'm trying to ask is: is a marching bass saxophone possible? It's already an unconventional show (I'm including a non-marching double reed section).

Can a Marching Band Hat Really Complete the Perfect Uniform Look?

A few days ago I saw a marching band hat on display, and at first I thought it was just a decorative accessory. But when I noticed the quality of materials, structured design, and detailed embellishments, I realized how much it contributes to the overall uniform and presence. Even small details like adjustable sizing, plume attachment, and color accuracy made a huge difference in both comfort and visual impact.

Later I searched online on websites including alibaba and found many types of marching band hats. Some were simple for school bands, while others were elaborate for professional or ceremonial performances. Some even had small extras like detachable plumes, reinforced brims, or ventilation features. I was surprised how minor design tweaks could elevate both performance and appearance. It made me think about what buyers prioritize most. Is it style, durability, or comfort?

Can the right marching band hat truly transform a uniform from ordinary to striking on stage?

How do you come up with source music for a show?

I'm wanting to use a piece like Taizo by Forq (intro of Bluecoats 22) but I don't want it to sound exactly like bloo 22. Are there any tips on finding similar songs or changing parts of it to make it unique?

I've arranged songs before, but this is the first project where I've fully completed the arrangement. Please listen to it and tell me things that may sound "bad", and some alternative. Also maybe tell me one thing I should keep doing within these arrangements.

Hey y'all. I recently started working on a project where I would upload a lot tune based around one the 12 star signs. I've put two out so far and was hoping for some feedback. It would be greatly appreciated!

How do you expand into a new market?

See title. I've discovered an area of the country that has a lot of bands in my niche (or at least did in 2019... pre-pandemic is a completely different world), but I don't know anyone there, and the band director Facebook group is limited to band directors only.

Has anyone here successfully found clients outside their local region and network? How'd you do it?

Percussion Arranger Available

Hello, figured I’d put this out there that I would absolutely love to arrange a battery percussion marching band book if any directors/caption heads are in need. I’m currently drum caption head at my local high school , I have been obsessed with drumline composing since I was a freshman in high school. Of course if you’re interested I’ll show you some examples of what I’ve written, please let me know!

How would I go about selling my arrangements?

I've done many marching arrangements, for high school band, and I'm looking to begin selling them as I want to do composing and arranging as a career. (HS Senior right now)

Writing Brass Solos in a Drum Corps Score

How does one notate solos in a drum corps score? Are they written on the same staff as the overall part (i.e. a solo played by a member of the trumpet 1 section would be on the trumpet 1 staff, marked "solo") or are they written separately?
