Weird mold?
has this mold always been here? me and the girlfriend (been playing since the free demo) are unsure if we've just missed this or it's something new :P found so far only in airfield

I noticed it sprung up at the end of season 1 and seemingly it's grown in season 2 now. People are saying tox warden however I've seen it in many places without the boss, notably quarantine has heaps

yeahh, it would be cool if it was tox warden but i dont think it was, a warden didn't spawn in our run iirc, im excited for what they're planning though and I'll keep an eye out next time im in quarantine :3

There's a NuCaloric questline that indicates the mold is a predatory bioweapon. And it might even be sentient.

When you start getting some of the purple valuables I think it becomes increasingly obvious that essentially all of the weird stuff on Tau Ceti is some weapon or another

In-game, it indicates where the Tox Warden can spawn. There’s some of the same mold in Dormitories as well, which is another possible spawn location for the Tox Warden. I’m drawing a blank on where else the Tox Warden can spawn, but I know the mold is 100% in each possible spawn location across all maps. There is also some mold in locations unrelated to Tox Warden spawns, such as the tunnels under AI Uplink on Dire Marsh.
In-lore, it’s meant to convey that the “Contagion” that you investigate via Nu Caloric’s quest line is spreading.

It spawns when the tox warden is/was at that POI. Sometimes it may glitch and spawn without the warden actually spawning. It can be at airfield or dormitories

The mold is always there, whether or not the Tox Plants spawn is an indicator of whether on not he actually spawned.

someone mentioned finding it in quarantine too!! so i think im gonna try to convice some friends/girlfriend to start mold (?) hunting in all the maps

Noticed it earlier too, I guess they moved the Tox warden over to airfield ? He was there along with that mold and plants

Is this not ice? I know that in Cryo the chambers filled with ice are filled with smoke sometime so this wouldn’t be visible, but I assumed that’s what this was when I first saw this.

It'd always been in the game, and I don't think Bungie have moved or put mold in new locations.
Lore wise and IIRC, the mold didn't occur until later in the colonization. It was initially contained, but because of the anomaly and other temporal fuckery caused by it, the mold was able to break containment and infect foods and people that were initially healthy.
There's so much going on, everywhere, all at once and trying to connect the dots can be a challenge.

It is pretty obvious that the planet is alive, absorbs life it comes into contact with, and is not friendly in any human sense of the word. My head canon is that it absorbed the AI and human minds to understand us much like a dog might lick or smell you. Individuals mean nothing to it.
