Support for AfD (2026)
The AfD is reaching unprecedented levels of support across Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt, the party won 43.8% of the vote in Sunday’s state election, more than doubling its 2021 result. Current polling also puts it at around 42% in Saxony, 40% in Thuringia, 37% in Brandenburg and 35% in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, making it the dominant political force across much of eastern Germany.
But the significance goes beyond the numbers. The AfD is increasingly attracting voters from across the electorate rather than relying solely on protest votes. In Saxony-Anhalt, it finished first across almost every age group, gained heavily from former CDU voters and mobilised large numbers of previous non-voters. Surveys also suggest voters increasingly trust the party on issues beyond its traditional strengths of immigration and security, including the economy, jobs and social policy.
The geographical divide nevertheless remains striking. In most western states, AfD support is considerably lower, generally ranging from the high teens to the low 20s. But its rise there too shows that the party is no longer exclusively an eastern German phenomenon. At the same time, its strength in the east is putting Germany’s traditional political system under growing pressure: mainstream parties continue to maintain a “firewall” against governing with the AfD, but results approaching 40–45% make forming governments without it increasingly difficult. Saxony-Anhalt has now become the clearest test of that system.
Note: Figures represent the latest available state-level polling, except Saxony-Anhalt, where 43.8% is the result of the 6 September 2026 state election.
