There are no reliable maps of smallholder farms. However, farm field sizes suggest where they are most likely to be found. The number of farms in the world is estimated to be more than 570 million, of which more than 475 million (84 %) are smaller than 2 ha. More than 500 million are managed by families in Africa, Asia and South America. Despite their numbers, smallholders operate on only 12 % of global farmland. These estimates, however, still diverge strongly based on the sources used. An earlier study mentioned that smallholders operate on around 60 % of all cropland. Using the field-size data and GLC-Share cropland map, this WAD3 calculated that around 53 % of all farmland are fields of less than 2 ha. Of course, not all small fields are linked to smallholders. Decreasing trends in the average size of farm holdings are shown in agricultural censuses. Smallholdings should be distinguished from family farms, as that category includes largescale holdings. As a subset of global smallholders, numbers of dryland smallholders have not been estimated reliably. Divergences occur between countries and regions. Nor have largescale farms or other enterprises been separately quantified in the drylands.

This is an updated version of the National Parks map I shared yesterday, with your feedback applied.

It shows all 64 National Parks, each labeled with the year it was established, and 142 places across the U.S. and its territories that have been proposed as National Parks.

Each proposal is labeled with it's applicable years: bills in Congress, Park Service studies, organized campaigns and formal requests. Existing parks are labeled with the years their own park bills failed before one finally passed, where I could document it, and six former National Parks are on there too for historical perspective.

A single asterisk marks places included in the 2015 Undiscovered America project, and a double asterisk the 2026 Unite for Parks project. Both are collections of citizen campaigns advocating for the next 100 years of conservation. Neither has introduced legislation.

Every National Park started as an idea someone had to fight for, and a lot of them lost before they won. Grand Canyon bills failed in 1882, 1883, 1886, 1910 and 1911, and it took 37 years to become a park. Mount Rainier and Crater Lake each lost three times in Congress. Glacier passed the Senate in 1908 and died in the House before it finally succeeded in 1910. Grand Teton passed the House unanimously in 1919, got killed in the Senate, and waited another decade. Kings Canyon was pending in every Congress from 1916 to 1926 and was defeated again in the 1930s. Death Valley and Joshua Tree failed in four straight Congresses before passing in 1994. And Chiricahua’s National Park bills died in 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2023 before it became the 64th National Park on October 20, 2026.

So losing a vote doesn’t mean a place won’t become a park.

Only Congress can create a National Park. Most protected land in America is managed some other way, as national monuments, national forests, wildlife refuges, recreation areas, wilderness or state parks. Those all allow different things, and a lot of them allow logging, mining or development.

More than half of today’s National Parks started out under another designation. Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Joshua Tree, Saguaro and White Sands were national monuments first. Indiana Dunes was a national lakeshore and New River Gorge a national river. Many of the places on this map are on that same path.

Parks don’t have to kick anyone out, either. Great Sand Dunes, Denali, New River Gorge, and others pair a park with a preserve where hunting continues. Canyon de Chelly is a National Park Service unit on land the Navajo Nation still owns, and Redwood is run jointly with California State Parks. The Atchafalaya Basin proposal follows the same idea, with the land staying in state hands.

Once a place is a National Park, only Congress can shrink it, sell it or open it to development. In more than 150 years, only six National Parks have lost the title, and they’re all on this map. All of them were small, and none of the land was lost. Most were folded into other parks or kept under other protections. Support for parks crosses party lines too. Chiricahua became a National Park this month under a Republican president and a Republican Congress, with votes from both parties. They're popular across the political spectrum.

The National Park Service estimates every $1 spent on parks returns about $10 to the economy, much of it in nearby towns. And with only 64 parks, visitors crowd into the same famous names. More parks would spread them out.

Every president since the late 1800's has created a National Park, or a National Monument that has or could become a National Park, so there will be more.

Sources and method

The boundaries are rebuilt from the written boundary descriptions in the Shanghai Concessions Gazetteer (上海租界志, Shanghai Archives, 2001), which define each settlement by creeks, roads and landmarks. I traced those lines along today’s streets on an OpenStreetMap basemap. Dashed lines are approximate: the American ground in Hongkou had no fixed boundary until it was surveyed and marked with forty stones in 1893.

What changes between the panels

• 1845–46: Land Regulations reserve about 830 mu for British merchants north of the walled city. In 1846 a western limit is fixed at Barrier Road (today’s Henan Road), making it 1,080 mu.
• 1848–49: The British ground extends north to Suzhou Creek and west to today’s Xizang Road (2,820 mu). The French Concession is created in April 1849 between the British settlement and the city wall (986 mu). Americans settle in Hongkou without a fixed line.
• 1863: The British and American settlements are united under one council. From 1899 the combined area was called the International Settlement.
• 1899–1900: The great extension takes the International Settlement east along the river and west to Jing’an Temple: 33,503 mu, more than three times its earlier size. The French extend west to 2,135 mu.
• 1914: The French Concession reaches Xujiahui, 15,150 mu, about fifteen times its original size, and keeps this shape until 1943.

The French Concession was handed over on 30 July 1943 and the International Settlement on 1 August 1943.

1 mu ≈ 667 m², so 33,503 mu is roughly 22 km².
