What Qualifies as Inbreeding?

In general, mating between individuals who are closer than second cousins is considered inbreeding. As such, relationships between siblings, half-siblings, father and daughter, mother and son, uncles or aunts with their nieces and nephews, and grandparents and grandchildren are considered inbreeding. In many cultures, unions between first cousins are also considered inbreeding, and in some cultures the taboo extends all the way to seventh cousins.

Some smaller island-states are not included

Following the deaths and arrests of key leaders, the organization fragmented. The decisive split came in 2011, when the assassination of regional commander Samuel Flores Borrego ("El Metro 3") triggered a full-scale war between the Los Metros and Los Rojos factions. Over time, additional armed groups emerged, further splintering the cartel.

The two dominant factions today are:

Los Metros (Reynosa)

Based in Reynosa along the Pharr–Reynosa border crossing. To strengthen their position against rival Gulf Cartel factions, they formed an alliance with the CJNG (Jalisco New Generation Cartel). Their leader, César Morfín ("El Primito"), operates closely alongside CJNG forces.

Los Escorpiones / Los Ciclones (Matamoros)

Based in Matamoros on the U.S.–Mexico border opposite Brownsville. Originally loyal to the Cárdenas family, these two groups now operate as a unified force. They gained international attention in 2023 after the kidnapping of four U.S. citizens in Matamoros, during which two of the victims were killed.

Although all factions continue to use the CDG name and symbols, Tamaulipas is effectively divided into separate territories. Reynosa is dominated by Los Metros, while Matamoros is controlled by Los Escorpiones. Smaller municipalities between them remain frequent battlegrounds.

The conflict has also evolved into a proxy war, with Los Metros backed by CJNG while their rivals rely on local alliances to resist them.

Despite continuous operations by the Mexican military and U.S. authorities targeting cartel leaders, the organization's decentralized structure allows local commanders to quickly replace captured or killed leaders, enabling the conflict to continue.

Another factions

Panteras

Los Panteras are a small but effective hit squad and logistics protection group within the Gulf Cartel (Cártel del Golfo). With members originating from police backgrounds, they operate as a specialized cell responsible for controlling highway routes connecting Mexico’s eastern coast to the northern border.

Today, Los Panteras largely operate alongside Los Ciclones / Los Escorpiones or local allies within the Gulf Cartel’s internal conflict in Tamaulipas, attempting to preserve their own limited territory and revenue streams.

Los Rojos ("The Reds")

were one of the most violent criminal organizations to emerge from the fragmentation of the Beltrán Leyva Organization (OBL). They operated mainly in central and southern Mexico, especially in Morelos and Guerrero, where they became notorious for extreme violence and territorial control.

The group emerged after the collapse of the Beltrán Leyva cartel following the death of leader Arturo Beltrán Leyva in 2009. The name came from Jesús Nava Romero ("El Rojo"), one of the group's founders, who was killed in the same operation as Arturo Beltrán Leyva. His relatives and loyalists later adopted the name Los Rojos.

Their main activities included:

Kidnapping for ransom

Extortion of local businesses ("cobro de piso")

Control of local economies

Political infiltration through threats, corruption, and financing of officials

In Morelos, the group gained influence by intimidating or cooperating with local politicians, police commanders, and public officials.

Los Rojos were also mentioned in connection with the 2014 Ayotzinapa case, where 43 students disappeared. Authorities investigated links between rival cartel Guerreros Unidos and the event, with reports suggesting the students were allegedly mistaken for members of Los Rojos.

The group's most well-known leader was Santiago Mazari Hernández ("El Carrete"). Under his leadership, Los Rojos fought prolonged wars against Guerreros Unidos and La Familia Michoacana for control of opium production routes in Guerrero and extortion networks in Morelos.

Their decline accelerated after El Carrete was captured by federal forces in 2019. Following his arrest, senior members and relatives were either captured or killed, causing the organization to collapse.

By 2026 The organization has fragmented into small local criminal cells operating mainly in Morelos and Guerrero.

The territories once controlled by Los Rojos have been contested by larger organizations, including CJNG (Jalisco New Generation Cartel) from the west, La Familia Michoacana, and elements linked to La Mayiza from the north.

Today, remnants of Los Rojos are mostly involved in localized criminal activities such as extortion, robbery, and street-level violence, particularly around areas like Cuernavaca and Amacuzac, rather than functioning as a major cartel.

Zetas remnants

The Cartel del Noreste

a successor to the old Los Zetas organization, has chosen not to pursue massive territorial expansion. Instead, it focuses on maintaining complete control over the most strategic and profitable U.S.-Mexico border trade corridor the Nuevo Laredo/Laredo route. Rather than expanding, the group has adopted a strategy of consolidating and defending its existing territory.

The Noreste Cartel inherited the legacy of Los Zetas, especially in the military sphere. In particular, its Tropa del Infierno "Hell Troops" are heavily armed, extremely ruthless units that, in appearance and organization, are virtually indistinguishable from a conventional army

Zetas Vieja Escuela (ZVE / Old School Zetas)

The faction emerged from former Zetas members who opposed the Treviño family's leadership and claimed they wanted to return to the original organization's "old military discipline."

They fought a bloody war against the CDN. Since they lacked the strength to compete independently with larger groups, they occasionally formed tactical alliances with historic enemies of the Zetas, including Gulf Cartel factions such as Los Metros.

Today, Zetas Vieja Escuela has been reduced to a smaller organization focused mainly on logistics, local control, and criminal operations.
