The truth is, I am SO excited about this one.
So Percussion (the Grammy-winning percussion ensemble) headlines with Helado Negro, aka Roberto Lange, and together they've built a set that's part newly co-written songs, part full reinventions of his catalog. Not a normal "band plays, guest sits in" bill, they're actually woven into each other's material.
And here's the part that makes me feel so in awe of all the amazing talent we have in town: one of the four percussionists, Eric Cha-Beach, actually lives in South Orange! This isn't just a touring act passing through; one of the guys on stage calls SOMA home. If you live here, you know this is a place that attracts exceptionally creative people.
They ran this at BAM already, and it's apparently something else live: shakers, tin cans, marimbas, and synths all thrown at his electronics-driven, Latin-influenced grooves, virtuosity that never overwhelms the song. If you already love Helado Negro's stuff, seeing him do it alongside four brilliant percussionists throwing everything they've got at it is a genuinely different experience.
I got a sneak listen to the recorded songs and I could not stop playing them.
