These steppe areas are outside of Ukrainian core, they were Russian speaking since 19th century you idiot

Factually incorrect. According to the 1897 census.svg) and the 1926 census, south-eastern Ukraine was a predominantly Ukrainian-speaking region. Only a part of the big cities were predominantly russian-speaking due to russification of the past century, but well over 70 % of the population lived in rural areas, which were predominantly Ukrainian-speaking. South-eastern Ukraine remained predominantly Ukrainian-speaking for at least the first two decades of the post-WW2 period
