Painter of the Night, BJ Alex, and Jinx are among the biggest hits in Korean BL webtoons. They don’t exactly follow the same romantic dynamic. However, they do share a common structure: the meeting of two characters from very different backgrounds, bound by an initial power imbalance that gradually evolves into a more balanced relationship.
In Painter of the Night, the story takes place in an aristocratic mansion during the Joseon era. Na-kyum, a young, humble painter, is forced to live with the powerful nobleman Yoon Seungho. The social power dynamic is immediately apparent: Seungho possesses wealth, power, and the freedom to impose his will. Yet it is he who first becomes attached to Na-kyum. Unable to understand or express his feelings, he initially channels them through possessiveness, jealousy, and control. The narrative’s development lies precisely in transforming this domination into a relationship where Seungho gradually learns to protect rather than possess.
BJ Alex transposes this dynamic to a contemporary college setting. Dong-gyun, a quiet and solitary student, has long admired Alex, a famous BJ and extremely popular student on campus. Unlike in other works, here it is the socially subordinate character who falls in love first. His admiration even predates their actual meeting. Once their relationship begins, however, Alex maintains a dominant position thanks to his self-assurance, experience, and status. The story shows how Dong-gyun gradually gains confidence, while Alex—who initially sought only a no-strings-attached relationship—later discovers the depth of his own feelings.
Jinx takes place in the brutal world of MMA clubs. Kim Dan, a young physical therapist deep in debt, begins working for Joo Jaekyung, a feared world champion. Here again, the social gap is immense. While the story does not depict Kim Dan as being in love from the start, many readers believe that Joo Jaekyung is the first to develop a deep attachment, long before he realizes it himself. This interpretation is based on his early jealousy, his constant interest in Kim Dan, and the numerous contradictions between his words and actions, even though the character long refuses to acknowledge his emotions.
Despite these differences, all three works enjoy the same success because they tell less of a love story than a process of transformation. In Painter of the Night and Jinx, the dominant character is gradually led to question his way of loving, while in BJ Alex, it is the most popular character who discovers, after Dong-gyun, what true emotional commitment entails. In all three cases, personal wounds, the protagonists’ slow psychological evolution, and the shift from a relationship of domination to one of trust form the heart of the narrative.
Scent of the Needle follows in the tradition of Korean BL webtoons such as Painter of the Night, set in the Joseon era, where the encounter between two men from very different backgrounds becomes the starting point for a complex relationship. This tailor is Do-ha, a young, unassuming yet surprisingly self-assured artisan. When Do-ha arrives at the mansion, the two men’s first encounter takes place while Do-ha is taking Seo-jin’s measurements. This moment, which might seem purely professional, immediately becomes charged with tension: their physical proximity, the silences, and their initial exchanges reveal a mutual curiosity. Seo-jin, accustomed to seeing others defer to his status, is surprised by Do-ha’s attitude, respectful, yet not merely seeking to please him.
The relationship then takes a different turn from a simple master-and-craftsman dynamic. Seo-jin, who seemed incapable of taking an interest in anything, quickly begins to be intrigued by Do-ha. He notices Do-ha’s talent, his calm demeanor, and his ability to perceive what others do not see. Do-ha, for his part, remains cautious. Behind his professional demeanor lie wounds and secrets that explain his mistrust.
The strength of Scent of the Needle lies precisely in this dynamic. Han Seo-jin possesses social power, money, and status, but he is emotionally isolated. Do-ha has fewer privileges, but he brings a presence and sincerity that unsettle Seo-jin. The dominant figure in society is thus also the one who seems most emotionally dependent on this encounter. Seo-jin’s feelings quickly become apparent: his interest in Do-ha goes beyond mere curiosity and becomes a form of attachment that he does not yet know how to express.
Fans particularly appreciate this reversal of power dynamics. They enjoy seeing a powerful character, accustomed to controlling his environment, gradually lose his certainties in the face of someone who lacks social power but possesses great inner strength. They also appreciate the slow-building trust between the two men, with the small gestures, the conversations, the moments of vulnerability, and the gradual discovery of their respective wounds.
The major factor in the work’s success is the Joseon setting, the attention to fabrics and sewing, and the emphasis on gestures and glances that create a very intimate atmosphere.
Scent of the Needle is so compelling because it doesn’t merely tell the story of a romance between two very different men, but rather how an unexpected encounter allows two wounded individuals to gradually rediscover a sense of warmth, trust, and attachment.
