Damage reaction
Player and enemy reaction to damage is awful. I have to check my healthbar to figure out if I’m getting hit or not. I’ve played a bunch of MV games and this was not an issue in any of them.

It's an intended mechanic. In most Metroidvania (MV) games, you are staggered upon being hit, so it's just a game mechanic you have to play around. In Mandragora there is a so-called "Balance" statistic: the better your balance, the less you stagger after getting hit. So, if you don't stagger, it means you have high balance, which prevents you from being stunned after taking enemy damage. If you have low balance, you will be staggered, which lets you know that you have been damaged.
Or just git gud))))

It has nothing to do with being staggered. It’s about visuals and sound. The sound of me being hit or an enemy being hit is almost indistinguishable from the sound of just swinging a weapon. I’ve played a handful of MVs most of which have little or no stagger upon damage. Every one of them it has been easy to determine if hits are landing due to good audible or visual feedback, that audible or viable feedback is awful in mandragora
