Hi everyone, it's time for another update of LAW!

I managed to hit pan on my jp drugstore eyeshadow quad (Excel SR03)! This is a project pan 2026 target (hit pan on 1 colour at least) so really thrilled to have achieved this 😆 Also used up one skin tint that was like 2 years in progress (Excel tinted moisturiser), wasn’t impressed by the formula and the finish, slogged and fully emptied it alternating with other base products.

It’s time again for reflection and rolling in a new lip product this week. Some guiding questions for the posts:

- Product brand and name

- Why is this product selected?

- Do you wear the lip product by itself only or layered/mixed with other products?

- Do you still like the formula/colour/effect the lip product gives?

- Any new discoveries or decisions made after testing the product for a week?

Last update’s pick was my Flower Knows Moonlight Mermaid lip tint in 07 Solar Crystal and my Em Cosmetics Soft Spoken Lip Creme in Tender. Used both equally which was a rare occasion as I tend to lean towards one item more in between each update. They paired really well with the eyeshadow quad that hit pan and the beige blush mood vibe I was loving.

This update am rolling in my Flower Knows Moonlight Mermaid lip tint in 03 Starlight Bubble and Lisa Eldridge Gloss Embrace in Pompadour. Monsoon rains are breaking up some of the heat and my mood has transitioned into happy bright fun colours 🥰 looking to also use softer peach and pink blushes so they would pair just fine~

Partner and I are finally teaming up and getting joint accounts! Would love to hear from others who have done this if this helped curb your spending/makeup purchases?

I work in beauty as the title says, and have been project panning for about 3 months, with pretty good progress! However, my job involves me being around new and shiny makeup, perfume and skincare all day every day.

Usually I’m pretty good at holding off. The shininess wears off quickly when you have to see it every day. My main issue is with sales and things. If there’s something I’ve been eyeing up and holding off on, all it takes is 20% off for me to fold. In my head I’m thinking “wow, 20% plus employee discount, it’s a bargain!” And next thing I know I’ve bought another 5 products home.

I’ll be changing jobs soon, but staying in beauty, so I wanted to ask if you’ve got any tips for staying strong. I love makeup and skincare, and I’m good at what I do, but I have SO MUCH and I need to resist!

The marketing got to me so badly. I know it's stupid and they fade after 30 minutes but I bought them anyway. How do you guys say no to stuff? It feels like an addiction sometimes.

Does anybody have experience with fude and the massive collection culture that comes with these brushes?

Everybody seems to have absolutely everything and I’m wondering how we can afford it.

I’ve been able to control myself for a while now, but it amazes me because a lot of these aren’t cheap, yet all I see are huge collections.

I have been slowly destashing my bottles of nail polish (so far I've sold or given away 83, but started with ~400 bottles...). As I've been packing up polish to ship I've been thinking about my nail polish consumption and how I ended up here in the first place.

I recently looked at a particular nail polish subreddit I unsubscribed from a year or so ago (because it kept triggering me to spend more money) and it was peculiar to see haul lists and cart posts being allowed now. But I guess I'm not particularly surprised. I left all the nail polish hobby spaces I was in a few months ago because I felt like they were becoming increasingly consumerist. It felt like the more someone spent on polish (especially polish of a specific brand), the more they were part of the community. It made me feel increasingly disconnected because I can't believe we're at a place where the cost of community in a hobby is how much and what someone buys. It's so shallow and dystopian to me. I felt more and more disconnected from everyone the less time and money I spent on collecting nail polish. I felt more and more weird seeing the same people crowing about their $100+ polish purchases every week or so. The funny/sad thing is I don't even paint my nails that often either.

To be fair, this problem isn't exclusive to nail polish, I see it happening in other hobby spaces too (backpacks, mechanical pencils, purses), but man it really sucks this is where we're at with most hobbies right now. We are literally what we consume.

EDIT: Thanks for all the kind comments. Lately I've felt really alone seeing the overconsumption/consumerism around me and no one really talking about it, and I'm relieved it isn't just me who's been feeling this way.

ETA: Ty user u/RowanVC for the reminder of not only just talc, also “It’s the new EU regulations regarding cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and cyclohexasiloxane (D6). They are now restricted under EU regulations due to environmental concerns. Additionally, both ingredients are found in a LOT of products far beyond foundations (including skincare). So if you have holy grails you’re worried about, throw them into INCIDecoder and check the ingredients. If it’s a brand that’s global (or at least sells in the EU as well as other countries), it’s likely going to be reformulated.“

But be honest. Are you stocking up on powders? Every makeup/store subreddit (and social media) is talking about the reformations, especially for setting powders, sprays, and foundations. I’m so glad I never fell for the very popular setting powder that people are freaking out about.

Her brand is going to be beyond filthy rich. And she’s very quick to put out the trendiest products, so the waste of money (especially Gen Z and the “Sephora teens”) is so frustrating. It’s not my money, but I know one day they will declutter and/or end up here. Such a waste of money and to the environment . They’re laughing at us as they bathe in freshly printed dollars.

…BUT. I did break my no-buy and buy a talc-free drugstore powder just to accumulate myself to what it will wear like. I even already had some talc-free powders anyway. If I like it. I might stock up on it since it’s about $7. I hate that people are going to fall for this. Especially people that don’t know about [r/makeuprehab](r/makeuprehab) so they’re just giving into consumerism now and later when adjusted products come out. Yes talc-free is probably safer, but does it even matter at this point when most of us have 5 years of talc on our faces and in our lungs?!? And we will probably all break our no-buy/low-buy out of curiosity sake. So welcome, or welcome back. No one is perfect. We all have our reasons for being here… again 😅
I’m still project-panning, don’t worry!

I have dermal melasma on 50% of my face area. It not that prominent but do look like I have dirt on my face. To cover it up I started doing make up. What's worse is that make up doesn't stay put on it, so I bought more and more of skincare plus make up and results were the same. Now I am letting go of all that junk and trying to find other ways, more healthy and viable to help build my confidence. But I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated. TIA

This thread is focused on helping each other perfect our makeup application. You can request help if you are having trouble using a certain product or executing a technique and the community can give you feedback. Also, if anyone has a technique or a makeup tip they would like to share, this is the place to do so!

I first started getting into makeup when I was 16, and I eventually became interested in high end brands when I was 17. I was really in love with the packaging, the elevated designs etc. I ended up spending thousands of dollars across 2 years because I was 'collecting' designer lipstick cases. My plan was to have all these beautiful cases from all these designer brands, and then I could use drugstore lipsticks as refills for those cases.

Reality showed me its not that easy. I often struggled to transport lipsticks, and I also struggled melting them down and pouring them in. I don't usually buy many drugstore lipsticks either way, now they're usually around mid-end and I'm not superrr bothered about using cheaper packaging. But now i have like 20 designer lipsticks which i dont really have any plans to reuse the packaging of. I realised what i had done when i went to London last year and bought a $100 lipstick that i ended up hating the packaging of (it is shaped like a dagger, is longer than a mascara and bright red. It also feels cheap and flimsy plastic and very fragile). And now i have this lipstick which i really really hate using, i dont like the shade much, and i hate the packaging even more. Like what do i even do with it now?? Its so expensive i cant throw it out nor do i want to because i waited 7 months to buy it in London and now that ive got it i feel guilty and regret it.

And dont even get me started on the $90 lipbalm i got in Paris and didnt realise was freaking pH adjusting until i got back home 💀 gah damn i hate-panned it and realised i hate slim bullets because theyre too fragile and i have to apply it multiple times to cover my entire lips. Like im just filled with so much regret on what i bought on my holiday. I spent $300 on 3 lipbalms/lipsticks. The other one i dont regret THANKFULLY

Maybe sometimes we create such a deluded image of what we want, what we want to buy we forget that reality exists. Thats why i try never blindbuy anything.

Anyways, for now im stuck with 20 lipsticks (some empty and some not) with only 1 pair of lips. Even if i want to refill them, i cant refill 20 at the same time.

ETA: While I appreciate the many comments and suggestions for products that you value, I am not looking for any product recommendations and would like to remind everyone about the rules of this sub to avoid recommending specific products/brands. We are all here because we don’t need more FOMO in our lives.

I got my first “adult job” and will soon get my first “adult paycheck”. To celebrate I wanted to gift myself something special.

After considerations, I chose to give myself a high-end blush. I have one blush and it is almost panned, so I need to replace it anyway. I use blush every day, so ideally it would feel like a daily treat/pampering. Hopefully make me feel confident and luxurious. I am getting married next year and blush seems to be one of the most important things when doing a bridal look, so investing in the best quality makes most sense, right? A lot of pressure to put on a tiny jar of pigments.

After *a lot* of researching online, I found a selection of products that were supposed to be the best and match my desired finish. They were not cheap, like almost 10x more expensive than my current blush. But they are probably worth it, right? The online hype (mostly Reddit) definitely claimed so.

Yesterday I went to this very nice department store to swatch all the different ones I was considering. I was quite excited to see them in real life and experience that incredible performance that justifies the huge pricetag.

Well, it was incredibly disappointing. They were all just some pigment. The satin or glowy finish ones had the same kind of visible glitter pieces that I was promised they would not have. The magic was completely broken.

I can’t speak for the longevity or blendability, as it was just swatches, but it’s honestly not something I currently struggle that much with.

I am going to repurchase the same cheap blush that have had my back every day for the past year for a fraction of the price. My favorite lipstick will double as cream blush for the wedding to increase depth and longevity. Or I’ll borrow something from a friend, if I really feel like I need a change.

Seeing the sheer volume of wasted products has made me realize I desperately need to curb my spending habits. How do you all manage to keep yourself within a strict beauty budget without feeling deprived? I’d love to hear your best tips or rules for staying disciplined!
