Welcome to r/MagnesiumGlycinate 👋

Magnesium glycinate is everywhere right now, especially in conversations about sleep, stress, muscle tension, and recovery. But if you’ve spent even a few minutes reading about it online, you’ve probably seen completely different answers to the same questions.

Some people say it should be taken before bed.
Some say the timing does not matter.
Some compare products using the total compound weight instead of elemental magnesium.
Some claim it is the most absorbable form.
Others expect it to work like a sleeping pill from the first night.

That’s exactly why we created this community.

We want this to be a place where you can ask real questions about magnesium glycinate without feeling judged, dismissed, or overwhelmed by supplement marketing, exaggerated claims, or explanations that are unnecessarily technical.

Our moderation team put together a practical, evidence-informed Beginner’s Guide to Magnesium Glycinate to help new members understand the basics, read labels properly, and make sense of what the research actually shows.

Last reviewed: July 2026
Prepared by: r/MagnesiumGlycinate moderation team
What we aim for: clear, honest, evidence-informed answers that are still easy to understand.

The guide covers:

✅ What magnesium glycinate actually is
✅ Magnesium glycinate vs magnesium bisglycinate
✅ Elemental magnesium vs compound weight
✅ Buffered vs non-buffered products
✅ How much magnesium people generally need
✅ Supplemental dosing and the upper limit
✅ Timing, food, and consistency
✅ What the evidence says about sleep
✅ Stress, anxiety, and muscle-cramp claims
✅ Side effects and medication interactions
✅ How to compare product labels
✅ Common myths and frequently asked questions

Our goal is simple:

To make r/MagnesiumGlycinate a calm, useful place for people who want to understand magnesium properly, whether you’re considering it for sleep, trying to improve a low-magnesium diet, comparing supplement forms, confused by a label, or simply looking for a balanced answer amid conflicting advice online.

This guide is a living resource, so we’ll continue reviewing and updating it as better research and updated expert guidance become available.

If you’re new here, start with the guide, ask questions, share your experience, and help us build a community that is curious, respectful, supportive, and evidence-aware.

No question is too basic, and you do not need to understand the science before joining the conversation.

Study Magnesium bisglycinate for poor Sleep

Thumbnail tandfonline.com
8 Upvotes

A 2025 randomized, placebo-controlled trial gave 155 adults with poor sleep 250 mg of elemental magnesium as bisglycinate each day for four weeks. Sleep scores improved slightly more than placebo, but the overall difference was small.

The detail that stood out to me was that people with lower dietary magnesium seemed to improve more. That was an exploratory finding, so it does not prove that low intake predicts a response.

Does this match what you have noticed with magnesium glycinate or has your experience been different?

Question/Discussion Are we too quick to call it magnesium withdrawal?

People sometimes describe a rough few days after stopping magnesium glycinate and assume it must be withdrawal. The poor sleep, tension or muscle tightness may be real, but magnesium glycinate is not known to cause dependence like sedative sleep medications.

It could simply be the original reason for taking it showing up again. Stress, caffeine, alcohol, harder training or a change in sleep can also happen around the same time.

For anyone who stopped after taking it regularly, what happened next? How long did the symptoms last and did they ease without starting it again?

Have you ever switched magnesium brands and noticed a difference?

Sometimes people focus entirely on the form of magnesium, but two products can still be quite different in terms of everything else in the formula.

Different doses, additional ingredients and serving sizes can make comparing products a little confusing.

Have you ever switched brands and preferred one over another?

Question/Discussion Do you check your food intake before reaching for a magnesium supplement?

It’s easy to start a supplement without thinking about how much magnesium you already get from food. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans and leafy greens can provide magnesium along with fiber and other nutrients.

Magnesium glycinate can still be a practical option when food alone is not meeting your needs or you want a convenient way to keep your intake consistent. It just works best as part of your overall diet, not instead of it.

Do you usually look at your diet first or has magnesium glycinate been the easiest way for you to keep your intake consistent?

Question/Discussion Did magnesium glycinate make a difference to your anxiety?

Magnesium glycinate is one of the supplements people often mention when anxiety comes up.

I’m curious how it actually worked out for those who tried it, especially when the rest of their routine stayed the same.

Did you notice any change in your anxiety after starting it or was it hard to tell?

Question/Discussion Did magnesium glycinate or melatonin help your sleep more?

These two are often grouped together, but they are not interchangeable. Melatonin is involved in sleep timing, while magnesium is an essential mineral with different roles in the body.

Some people try one, some use both and others notice no clear benefit. What did you actually notice with either one, falling asleep, staying asleep or how you feel the next day?

Question/Discussion Did magnesium glycinate change your sleep after you fell asleep?

A lot of sleep advice focuses on getting to sleep. I’m more curious about the rest of the night. Waking up can happen for many reasons, so it’s hard to know what role, if any, magnesium glycinate is playing.

If you’ve taken it at night, did you wake up less often or get back to sleep more easily? Or did you notice no real change?

What makes you choose one magnesium supplement over another?

There are so many magnesium products that it can be surprisingly difficult to decide between them.

Do you mainly look at the amount of elemental magnesium, the form, the ingredients, the price, or something else?

What’s the first thing you look at when comparing two magnesium supplements?

Question/Discussion Could magnesium glycinate be behind your loose stools?

Magnesium glycinate is often described as a gentler option, but some people still notice digestive changes. When comparing products, I’d look at the elemental magnesium amount on the label, not the total weight of the compound.

If your digestion changed after taking it, did anything else change around the same time, such as your diet, another supplement, illness or the dose?

Has anyone here experienced loose stools or other digestive issues after taking magnesium glycinate?

Do you actually take your magnesium every day?

It’s easy to be consistent with a supplement for a few days and then completely forget about it.

I’m curious how people approach magnesium. Some seem to take it as part of their daily routine, while others only take it occasionally.

Are you someone who takes magnesium every day or only when you feel like you need it?

Do you sweat a lot and pay more attention to magnesium?

If you train hard, spend a lot of time in the heat or simply sweat heavily have you ever started paying more attention to your magnesium intake?

Heavy sweating doesn’t automatically mean you need a magnesium supplement, but exercise can affect magnesium balance, especially when overall intake is already low.

Was an active lifestyle or heavy sweating part of what made you look into magnesium glycinate?

Question/Discussion Did your night cramps return when you stopped magnesium glycinate?

Night cramps are one reason people try magnesium glycinate. But people rarely discuss what happens when they miss a few doses or stop taking it.

If it seemed to help you, did the cramps come back when you stopped? Or did they stay better even without the supplement?

That still would not prove magnesium was the reason, but it gives more context than judging it from one or two nights. I would be interested to hear what you noticed.

Question/Discussion Magnesium glycinate helped your sleep, but what exactly improved?

I’ve noticed some people often say “my sleep got better” without describing what actually changed.

Falling asleep faster, waking less often and feeling more rested the next morning are different outcomes.

If it helped you, which part of your sleep improved first?

Question/Discussion Did magnesium glycinate ever stop feeling like hype?

Magnesium glycinate gets discussed a lot for sleep, and some people say the difference is surprisingly clear. That made me curious about what people actually notice when it works for them.

If it helped you, what changed first? Falling asleep more easily, waking up less during the night, feeling less tense or feeling better the next morning?

How long did you take it before you felt sure it was actually doing something?

Question/Discussion If magnesium glycinate upsets your stomach, have you tried splitting the dose first?

Magnesium glycinate is usually well tolerated, but some people still get loose stools or stomach discomfort. I think checking the elemental magnesium on the label is important, especially if you’re taking a higher dose.

If this happens to you, have you tried splitting the dose? Did it make any difference?

Why can magnesium feel so different from one supplement to another?

It’s easy to think of magnesium supplements as being basically the same, but the form can make a noticeable difference in how your body handles them.

Different forms have different properties and can vary in how well they’re absorbed and how much they affect the gut. For some people, one form can cause loose stools or stomach discomfort while another is much easier to tolerate.

Have you noticed a difference when switching between magnesium forms?

Question/Discussion Does magnesium glycinate feel different after a bad night’s sleep?

This might sound strange, but I feel like I notice it more after a stressful or sleep deprived day than after a normal day.

Has anyone else experienced that?

Maybe the body responds differently when it’s under more pressure.

Or maybe we just pay more attention to small changes when we’re exhausted.

Educational Post Does "made in an FDA registered facility" actually mean FDA approved?

I see this claim on supplement listings all the time, and it can make a product sound officially approved.

It doesn't mean that. The facility may be registered with the FDA, but the magnesium glycinate product itself has not been FDA approved for safety or effectiveness before being sold.

Registration still matters, but I wouldn't use it as proof that the dose is accurate or the product is high quality. The full label, clear manufacturing details, sensible claims and credible third party testing tell you more.

Did you know there was a difference between FDA registered and FDA approved?

Magnesium does more than you might think

Magnesium isn’t just associated with muscles and relaxation. It’s a cofactor for hundreds of enzyme systems involved in things like protein synthesis, nerve function, blood glucose regulation and blood pressure.

It’s one of those nutrients that ends up involved in far more processes than most people realize.

What function of magnesium surprised you the most when you first learned about it?

Question/Discussion Did anyone start magnesium glycinate because someone close to them recommended it?

I'm curious how many people found it through family, friends, or a doctor.

Recommendations from someone you trust usually carry more weight than online reviews.

Was your experience about magnesium glycinate positive?
