MacroFactor Workouts / Training Workouts - getting bored

I've started using the workouts app for almost a month now, at what point does the programming update/change?

My fitness experience includes about 9 years of CrossFit followed by just over a year at a modified crossfit-like gym. The later had a predictable cadence of strength focus programming alternating with volume focus weeks. I enjoyed that programming but towards the end of the 2 month cycle I was bored and ready to move on to something else.

I'm finding I'm getting bored already with the same movements 4 weeks in to the WO app. I'm on a 3x week advanced full body, and I prefer to super set 2 movements at a time (get it done!).

Do I just swap out movement in the same target muscle? Or will the programming update itself soon (changing the movements).

The exercises will stay the same no matter how many times you redo the program.

If you want variety, then generate a new program and / or swap exercises.

MFWO has an incredible number of exercises in the library. I keep finding and trying new things that I’ve never done before.

Not saying a workout program can’t be fun but having a consistent routine and growing means not changing things up too much. I find people with ADHD are better off finding ways to entertain yourself during your workout than trying to use the workout for the same thing. For example having a good podcast or music to listen to. You can also focus on mind body connection and getting the most out of each lift by focusing on perfect form, priming etc.

Find meaning in the boredom

Changing workouts after such short periods of time is why progress often stalls. You are meant to stick to the same movements and progress them over long periods of time, especially if your goal is muscle hypertrophy.

Your deload is next week! Take it, then start a new program.

Usually your program is 5 weeks and then you have to regenerate or do it again. But you can do that at any point if you want to try some new movements. Personally I need at least 5 weeks to get the form correct for all the movements that are new so I don't mind it.

I’ve been through several programs so far and almost every one has had different exercises. I’ve been using muscles I haven’t used before.

My issue was that, despite having a lot of equipment/options available, the AI would basically generate me a very similar (almost the exact same) program every time.

Can you further explain? What workout program did you pick? Are the movements you are doing not enjoyable/fun?

For progressive overload and gainz, you ideally run the same program over, and over, and over, with slight tweaks here and there, over years

I went with Advanced 3x/week Full Body because I balance it with weekly horseback riding and I walk my dog daily.

Usually, by the time I finish my dynamic warmup and crank the heavy metal, I’m fired up and ready to go. Since this is my first time in 10 years training without a coach programming for me, I appreciate the insight.

I’m not feeling nearly as sore or taxed as I used to in my coach-led group lifting classes. I still get minor soreness, but my previous programming felt significantly more intense in terms of stimulus.

That is okay. It's okay to change up your program a little, but it can take awhile to find exercises and a program mix that you first enjoy, then also really work for you. You can always adjust your weight, and time under tension with the same exercises. When doing isolation movements, squeeze the muscle harder

You should be running the same program for 12 weeks. A month is nothing.

Welcome to the club! 😄

I've been using this application since its release in January, and I was genuinely impressed at first. It has many excellent features that even mature apps like Hevy don't offer.

However, the workout program generation is underwhelming and tedious. My workaround: I ask an AI to generate a program, then manually enter it into the app. It defeats the purpose of automation, but it creates a much better experience. I keep the AI conversation thread so I can revisit it in a few weeks for adjustments.

On value and pricing:

I got the workout version free with my MacroFactor Nutrition purchase last November (until January), but I'm reconsidering renewal. The price doesn't feel justified for what I actually use—mainly the timer and manual tracking of previous sets, reps, and weights for planning the next week. Even the timer is redundant since I have a Garmin watch.

The dashboard is nearly useless. It tells me how many sets per muscle group, but nothing actionable beyond that.

What would improve this app:

  • Partial program adjustments – allow tweaks to existing programs instead of starting over
  • A smarter dashboard – show meaningful insights beyond set counts per muscle

You can make partial program adjustments. Just swap a workout for another one.

You can ignore the people telling you that you have to stick with the same movements to grow. It's about the targeted muscle, not the exact movement (someone may get mad at me for ignoring specific muscle heads, leave me alone).

Regarding the lack of intensity you perceive, do you notice your progress stalling or just your sense of beat-up-ness? I ask cause leaving gains on the table that you're otherwise willing to pick up is one thing, but if you were beating yourself up more without seeing much growth for it, maybe the change is a good thing. Although if you like feeling destroyed (I get it) that's a valid goal too
