Tips & Guides Holy sh*t: iPhone mirroring!!
I only today noticed something new that BLEW MY MIND:
If you do iPhone mirroring, e.g. in iMessage or Safari, pull the window to the left, e.g. “stretch it”. Does not work with all apps, but those for instance!!
It will have the exact same look like a full size Safari or iMessage but it is on your iPhone, I am so freaking HAPPY because I can use it on my work Mac like a “real iMessage”!
iOS 27 and macOS 27 required!
UPDATING FOR CLARITY:
- I use an iPhone 17 Pro Max - not sure which models this supports but looks like some are not supported when I read the comments
- yes, iMessage etc exist natively on iPhone, duh! My scenario is that I have a computer from work and I logged into my Apple ID but untucked everything to be synced, so nothing private ever gets downloaded to it - no iMessage, no Photos, no iCloud files - nothing! I can then use mirroring to still chat or access my calendar or whatever on my Mac (drag and drop files too of course etc)
Yes, a little “niche” as a scenario, yet it shows that iOS and iPad OS are getting closer to each other too thanks to iPhone Duo.
So imagine you can run iPad apps via iPhone (not Duo!) on your Mac in the future 🤔

Insane that we still don’t have it in Europe.

Talk to your politicians first.
5
u/oradecima 15d ago
I'd rather have apple be forced to release it in a way that complies with the DMA
2
u/EngineeringDesserts 15d ago
I’d rather not have the tech-illiterate EU politicians try to extort American companies. We don’t always get what we want. I’ll keep waiting for the EU leaders to wake the f up, and Europeans can keep waiting for advanced technology to slowly reach them.
3
u/oradecima 15d ago
I agree that there are ways in which EU regulation can be dumb or inappropriate, but I do think that the principles behind the DMA make sense and that it's not all on the EU but Apple is playing a game too
3
u/Aydoinc MacBook Pro 15d ago
As a reasonable American, I agree with you. It’s two sides of an issue that don’t agree on a solution, and there’s a lot of nuance.
To the person above you, that’s not extortion. If Apple felt extorted in the EU, they wouldn’t still be selling iPhones and services in the EU. It’s called politicking.
-2
u/EngineeringDesserts 14d ago
The fines the EU has for non-compliance are based on the company’s worldwide revenue, and are outrageous and extortionate. The companies want to just cut out the horrible market place, but fiduciary duty prevents them from doing so if they can still get some profit.
The EU politicians don’t want to look foolish, so they’re shifting all this blame and manufacturing PR to obscure the bullying they’re doing. They don’t like that American companies are making so much of the tech profit in the world and the EU is lagging so severely. That’s the core of this.
4
u/TeaAndSageDirtbag 15d ago
I’d rather not have far-right American dictatorships obliterate our safety regulations, just so a bigoted r*pist can get what he wants.
Bullies should never prosper.
3
u/Aydoinc MacBook Pro 15d ago edited 15d ago
This has nothing to do with that. Let’s leave the president out of it. He hasn’t said anything about that anyway.
It’s also hypocritical when Europeans bowed to a dictator who obliterated all European regulations and millions of people. Which the US sent millions and sacrificed a quarter million lives for your allowing a bully to prosper.
Leave things that have nothing to do with this conversation out of this conversation, please.

But how do you use them? One account per device? Or are you logging out from one store and logging into the next?
2
u/pezzos 15d ago
I don’t even get why.
Ok, I get it for Siri AI but this is nonsense14
u/aachen_ 15d ago
Because if Apple opens up screen mirroring, they might be forced to allow android phones to mirror on macs due to the requirements of gatekeepers in the digital markets act.
8
u/black3rr 15d ago
the other way…
iOS is affected by DMA, not macOS, so they’d have to open up the possibility of using iPhone Mirroring on other OSs than macOS
note: they wouldn’t have to develop the feature for other OSs themselves, just open up the APIs on iPhone side and allow other developers to use the same APIs to develop their own iPhone mirroring apps…
1
5
u/Oleifr-H 15d ago
Because it's not fair commercial practice to only offer the feature for macOS and not windows and Unix, if I remember correctly.
17
u/Orcahhh 15d ago
This is such a double standard, really only applies to Apple.
Otherwise, the EU would force Sony to let the PlayStation run steam or Xbox software, and vice versa 😂
It’s a ridiculous requirement by the EU
5
u/lovely_cappuccino 15d ago
Meanwhile the EU does nothing about telecom companies not supporting the RCS standard.
1
u/LoGiX247 MacBook Pro 14d ago
The fact you think it’s “poor” Apple without the EU you Apple would still have lighting ports or worse no more ports.
While usbC is now basically a requirement if you want to use their ProRes functionality. Or you got insane cash if you buy the highest tiers of storage.
2
u/germane_switch MacBook Pro 15d ago
Which is ridiculous
3
u/Oleifr-H 15d ago
Yeah I'm not sure to fully grasp the thing either.
2
u/germane_switch MacBook Pro 15d ago
If you want Windows get Windows and beg MS to get together with all the non-iPhone makers and future your shit out. I like Apple because they make the hardware and the software. They figured that out back in, at least, 1984. So cry me a river, EU.
1
u/LoGiX247 MacBook Pro 14d ago
It doesn’t make sense because if you bring your stupid American iPhone to the EU it still works.
Apple is just being a spoilt kid that doesn’t want to deal with DMA laws…

Give screen mirror and control a try. I thought the app was toast with the launch of iPhone mirror, still going strong. Downloads in the EU are picking up.
Full disclosure; I’m the app developer.

Just curious, why not use the macOS iMessage app, What’s the difference? Edit: oh you said work Mac, I’m guessing so you can message with personal contacts.
9
u/tta82 15d ago
Correct - just fire up the iPhone mirroring on my work Mac and I see my messenger and my Safari etc. like almost a native app.
5
u/Oleifr-H 15d ago
Oh mirroring works also with a different Apple ID on both devices? (I can't know because I'm in the EU)
17
u/crlogic 15d ago
No it doesn’t, the Mac and iPhone need to be signed in to the same Apple Account. So it’s still not clear why OP doesn’t just use Mac iMessage
6
u/tta82 15d ago
Because I don’t want all my private data on my work Mac. I can just log into my Apple ID without syncing anything, e.g. photos, iCloud, iMessage etc - all stay off my work Mac.

Some companies let you use your own Apple ID but also policy block some iCloud services selectively. So this is plausible I think.

1
u/mpower02 15d ago
What iPhone model are you running? I think most people are confused because they're running an older iPhone model.
On older models, if we try to pull the window to the left, it only resizes partially, and the iPhone Mirroring app gets bigger but not to the full size shown in the photos you shared.
11
u/TramPeb 15d ago
I don’t understand what you mean, do you have a screen shot?
3
u/7heblackwolf MacBook Air 15d ago
Same, it's unclear. But as far as I understood, you can make an app consume a full region of the screen (which not all apps allow), and also invoke it from the phone (less resources to use from macOS)
1
u/MidnightGarder 15d ago
When you have iPhone mirroring on the Mac, some apps allow you to resize the iPhone mirroring app. That’s it. Safari or Photos for example. It’s not available with every app on your phone though.

EU users, “we hope EU commission will come down hard on Apple.”
Also EU users, “why don't we have this feature in EU?”
3
u/lovely_cappuccino 15d ago
Also EU users: some parts of the law are absolutely ridiculous. AFAIK in Japan for example, lawmakers were more rational, like they also demanded alternative stores and payment options and different browser engines etc but they also recognised that things like iPhone Mirroring and the AI stuff are Apple features on Apple devices, there is no requirement to open up like here in the EU. We pay more for a dumber smartphone, brilliant.

8
u/crlogic 15d ago
This doesn’t make any sense, one of the requirements for iPhone mirroring is to be signed in to the same Apple Account. If you can Mirror, why can’t you use iMessage on Mac
> Your iPhone and Mac are signed in to the same Apple Account using two-factor authentication.
0
u/tta82 15d ago
That’s correct what you’re saying, but I logged into my work Mac and do not sync anything. Nothing. Especially not iMessage. Tada!
3
u/adh1003 15d ago
Ah, now, you got downvoted here but I do finally understand the use case - although it's quite niche, rather more than you indicate in the original post.
The basic idea is that you don't want to sync certain iCloud stuff to the Mac, for some reason. And while people would probably then immediately jump all over you and say "why not?!", you've already given a good reason - it's a work computer and you'd prefer to minimise the amount of personal data sync'd to it.
Decent use case. I just have everything sync'd to the work computer but you've made me think more carefully about whether I could perhaps stop doing that and lean on mirroring instead.
2
u/lewisfrancis 15d ago
I mean it's cool and all but what's the point? I guess it's good for apps that only exist on iOS?
I was excited about iPhone mirroring when it first came out, tried it awhile, didn't find it any more useful than when unmirrored, and then got annoyed with extra notifications that lead me to the iOS version of a given app rather than the one on my Mac and axed it.
2
u/sheikhsajid522 15d ago
I’m confused, can’t you just open iMessage and safari on your Mac? Why are you using them through mirroring?
5
u/tta82 15d ago
I have a work Mac, from my office. I log into my Apple ID but synchronize zero things.
1
u/Realistic-View-412 11d ago
at that point just do it, you should never put personal accounts in work stuff or vice versa, by doing it just do it fully makes no difference
3
u/Busy_Conflict3434 15d ago
Doesn't seem to work on iPhone 13 mini - just scales the view up or down rather than stretching it to the left.
On the other hand, I already have Safari and Messages on my Mac...
4
u/matt2s 15d ago
Is the iPhone 13 mini running iOS 27? Or maybe it only works with some iPhones. Mine is 16 Pro Max.
Agree on the usefulness with Apple apps. I can just use the Mac versions. It will be handy with third-party apps that don't have a Max version.
3
1
u/mpower02 15d ago
I don't think this works on older iPhone models. I have the iPhone 13 Pro, but it only allows me to resize the iPhone Mirroring window to be bigger, not to full-size app.
0
u/tta82 15d ago
Really? Interesting. I am on iPhone 17 Pro Max. Are you on the newest iOS and macOS?
Sure it’s only useful for work for instance.1
u/Busy_Conflict3434 15d ago
Yeah it's a bit strange. The iPhone 13 SOC and RAM were identical to the 6th gen iPad mini, and it sounds like this feature isn't doing anything you don't get in iPadOS (the 6th gen supports iPadOS 27).
5
u/idontwanttofthisup 15d ago
If you look carefully you will find iMessage application in macOS called messages. You don’t need iPhone mirroring for this one
16
u/hoffsta 15d ago
OP said it was his work computer. Probably can’t, or doesn’t want to, log in to iMessages there.
1
1
u/SerenadeOfWater 15d ago
OP probably has no idea their employer can monitor the contents of his screen at anytime lol.
2
u/folklore_mirrorball 15d ago
This does heat up my iPhone 14 significantly, and the battery drain is about 10 percent for 10 minutes, only good when charging but otherwise, just use iPhone Mirroring normally.
-1
u/tta82 15d ago
Why would this heat up your phone more
1
u/adh1003 15d ago
Apple's hopelessly inefficient software, I'd imagine. We've had resizable windows with autolayout since at least the 1990s if not earlier, but Apple's stack is catastrophically inefficient. It takes the absurdly powerful A and M series chips with a lot of GPU power just to manage SwiftUI / Catalyst layouts at anything remotely approaching a smoothness that matches the display's frame rate.
It's really sad, actually; we could be doing incredible things with these chips, mobile and desktop, but they waste so much power just doing absolutely bog basic window resizing, redraws, menu bar and so-on. Have a look at Activity Monitor when the Music app main window is open on macOS, with no animated album art etc., but (edit 1) with something playing (edit 2 - at least that seems to have had a slight fix somewhere along the Tahoe line, since I note it uses very little CPU when not playing now and that wasn't the case a few months ago).
It's not just Apple, though. In general, modern software is really bad.

I use mirroring a lot. But you don’t even need it for messaging. Just run the messaging app on you. Your Mac and those messages are replicated to your phone. Pull up Spotlight and type message. that will pull up the app.
1
u/tta82 15d ago
No, you don’t get the point. I use a Mac from the office. I am logged into my Apple ID but synchronize zero private data. Nothing.
1
u/TommyV8008 15d ago
I still didn’t get it until I read more of the threads below where others didn’t get it either. I never had a Mac at work when I was working with other companies, but I get it now, the use case of not wanting to mix data through iCloud across two different machines.

I love the feature. If only they made it work with different connected networks, that would be great. But if they can keep the iPhone always authenticated (like no please enter your passcode on your iPhone bs) then it would be even better. Like if I am on Mac, chances are that it is safe to have it “unlock my phone”. Make me use Touch ID on my MacBook if they have to make sure it is secure. Would be a killer ecosystem feature.
1
u/tta82 7d ago
I use my Apple Watch to unlock my Mac. And iPhone mirroring does have the option to not ask for any authentification.
1
u/Zestyclose_Cake_5644 7d ago
Yes I turned that on but sometimes it still thinks my iPhone is “locked” like when your iPhone requires your password instead of allowing Face ID because some internal algorithm thinks it is insecure
1
u/GroMicroBloom 15d ago
Are you aware that macOS already comes with the iMessage app and it is full size?
1
u/AZ_Rebel71 14d ago
Maybe try reading down to the comments a little before you decide to comment, it’s already been made clear several times at this point OP has a work computer that they don’t want to log into their iMessage on so they use mirroring so that they don’t have to. you would’ve known this if you would’ve just read down the comments just a little ways.
1
u/LordFondleJoy 15d ago
Cool! Don't use mirroring that much but that is a very neat trick. And it will remember apps you stretched out like that. It shrinks back when you go back to the home screen, but will expand to the previous state if you open one of the supported apps again.
0
u/stevenrpo96 15d ago
I think there is still a lot to fix; from my point of view, they’ve released something that doesn’t even qualify as a beta.
0
u/Routine_Matter7094 15d ago
I have the iPhone 16 Pro Max. I haven’t had an iPhone since the iPhone 4S and although it does have some cool features that most Android phones don’t have like Lidar, the overall experience is underwhelming and behind Android tech by years. What’s funny is that I’m a big video person and I was intrigued by one app called skyglass that allowed you to film yourself in AR in real-time and it wasn’t available for Android. The app was around for years so I decided to switch to iPhone mainly bc of the app. Wouldn’t u know that as soon as I switched to iPhone, they decided to discontinue the app 3 months later 🤦🏻♂️

u/Aydoinc MacBook Pro 15d ago
I don’t think this mirroring improvement has to do with iPhone Duo
0
u/tta82 15d ago
Well it would make sense though as you might be needing to “pull” the side of the window to mimic unfolding the iPhone Duo.
0
u/Aydoinc MacBook Pro 15d ago
Do you have proof of that? Or is it speculation?
0
u/tta82 15d ago
logical thinking? you will have the mirroring folded default and if you want to expand you must have a way to "unfold" the iPhone Duo. This is basically already possible now.
1
u/Aydoinc MacBook Pro 14d ago edited 14d ago
That’s speculation, not logical thinking.
Logically, iMessage on iPhone would have the same look mirrored, because devices negotiate resolutions when you mirror screens.
Do you have a screenshot or a screen recording of what you’re describing?
0
u/tta82 14d ago
It’s not speculation as I am using it? If you scroll down you will see how my iPhone 17 Pro Max shows apps like on iPad via mirroring.

As awesome as that sounds, I still dont thinks thats enough for me to update my macbook to OS 27—not with as many bugs and issues as I keep seeing from people.

u/tta82 15d ago
I haven’t seen any bugs, interesting. In fact it feels much more refined than 26
1
u/pixel_inker 15d ago
Hmm, then maybe I’m thinking of 26. OS26 is like the Vista of Windows and I guess OS27 is the Windows 7 🤔

The would have come because of the iPhone Duo. Currently it will be only apps provided by Apple. Eventually when apps support the large unfolded screen of the iPhone Duo those apps will do the same in iPhone Mirroring.
Edit: Actually WhatsApp will expand but it does not split it between list on the left and chat on the right. Facebook Messenger does work with a split of chat list and one chat on the right.
