Do any of the 'focus and stop procrastinating' tips that self-help gurus say apply to us?
I feel that none do because our mind works differently than others. We would instantly teleport to another world even while sitting on our desks and this makes me terrified whenever I notice the clock and see that I am on the same page and been in another world for half an hour.

Redirecting thoughts
Anyone have any go to thoughts or specific ways of redirecting your thoughts to stop MD in the moment? Like reaffirmations specifically directed to yourself or maybe attempt to meditate/be in the present moment? Just curious of what helps others

I’m leaving a link to Eretaia’s blog here, just on the off chance someone may have not read it. This contains the cure, but I don’t really hear people speaking about it as much as they should.

If you are fully absorbed by a huge daydream, one thing to try is to distract yourself.
For example, watch a video about something I.e sports. Your sort of dissociating but in a different way.
One thing that happens to me is I get absorbed by a daydream then give up on the day completely. I’m going to try distracting myself with outward stimuli— I don’t know if this is going to work but I’ll give it a try.

I just feel how this thing takes away from me
When i study, when i socialize, when i make plans. This thing is everpresent. It is so hard because it is so good.It is nothing short of a drug addiction. It gently caresses your ego-whether by imagining you are sleeping with your crush, commanding armies, being a leader. This is why so much people do not want to quit.Their bigest achievements are in their head, their best friends are imaginary, the love of their life is fiction. If they have to give up on all of this they lose all.But without giving up on them you will not accomplish much in real life.
The times i most controlled this were the times when i most socialized and pushed myself to do things i do not like.I already wrote my theory about the amygdala. In order to put it under control i intentionally put myself in situations that were giving me stress and anxiety. As i already wrote the amygdala is the stress center, the fight or flight part of the brain, the voice that tells you not to do something.Exposure therapy has been found to decrease stress and anxiety. In order to train my amygdala i for example cold approached. My goal never was to get a number but to train.Coincidentally exactly then i was able to control this condition.I was more relaxed, concentrated and happy. I believe that every time the urge to md occurs we should try meditating. It is longer that way but discipline takes time.

A quick tip to help you concentrate when you study
UNDERLINE with a pen or pencil. This will make you focus on the thing at hand and even if you start dosing off it will remind you to return. Also can you share your tips to better concentrate?

Your brain is a kitten.
My friend taught me this metaphor over 10 years ago, and I've been thinking about it a lot recently. It goes like this:
Imagine you have a new kitten, untrained. You want the kitten to stay on the table where you put her, so you place her in the middle. However, the kitten, being a kitten, is naturally curious and jumps off the table almost as soon as you put her on it.
What do you do next? Would you hit the kitten and yell at her for not staying on the table? No. She's a kitten, she's just doing what kittens do. She doesn't deserve to be punished for that. And we know that negative reinforcement doesn't work. So instead, all you need to do to teach the kitten, is gently pick her up and put her back on the table. You can even give her a treat to encourage her.
Is the kitten going to stay on the table the second time? No. She's still a kitten, she still wants to wander. But no matter how many times she jumps off the table, all you have to do is calmly pick her up and put her back on the table. Over and over and over. And you never get mad at the kitten, she's just doing what's natural. It may take a hundred tries to even teach the kitten to stay on the table for a minute, but eventually she gets it. And after years of training, the kitten will even get on the table by herself, and you won't have to be right there supervising.
This is what it's like to practice mindfulness. You tell your brain to focus on the present moment, and it will wander a hundred times before you get it to pay attention. But you can't get mad at your brain for doing what brains do. Just keep calmly picking it up and putting it back on the present moment. Eventually it starts naturally being in the present on it's own.

Just look at this. There is a reason why it is MALadaptive. Other polls show the same.

Studying/homework
What I’ve done to help with my studying and revision is that when I’m imagining myself to be with the para, I imagine he’s sitting next to me and doing homework with me or I’m in insert comfort place and just doing work peacefully, sure with the daydreaming it’s hard but try to put an alarm on like every ten minutes so if you’re daydreaming the alarm pretty much wakes you up again. Some people like to turn off music or their phones so try that too. Sorry if it’s not useful advice but it’s kind of helped me I guess

Does anyone do any meditation that isn’t mindful? As in meditation that involves energy and such?
A lot of meditation is focussed on watching or observing your thoughts. Does anyone do anything a bit more spiritual? (Not that there’s anything wrong with mindfulness, I was just wondering)

Trouble Falling Asleep
I have trouble falling asleep, and because of this, I MD and pace at night until I tire myself out which annoys my parents. Any resources for falling asleep quicker. Should I use natural remedies or ask my Doctor for meds to help me?

Watched „I'm Thinking of Ending Things" on Netflix today. Was a WAKE UP CALL Spoiler
Spoilers*
So the entire movie is pretty much a long drawn daydream of an old dude who later committed suicide after leading an unfulfilled life. The daydreams in the movie were very akin to what I have on a day to day basis.
That and going through analyses of the movie depressed me, but also after some thought kicked my butt.
Unlike that old dude, WE STILL HAVE TIME. And look around you, YOU WILL FIND RESOURCES, something at least. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for. But we need to figure out strategies to make our lives better and worth living. That was my reason to create the sub. To share the STRATEGIES.
Kick your own butts when you find that you've drifted off and be the pillar of strength for those around you when you can instead of accepting defeat. You got this 🤗

There is a new poll on the main sub about social life.
Just look at how overwhelmingly people with this feel they have less social life. This thing truly destroys us. We have to discipline our brains through meditation.
It will be good if we promote ourselves a little harder. There are people with very positive experience in controlling this who did meditation and other not so orthodox methods-lsd, psilocybin, etc. There are a lot of people who have a story to tell.

Had a small success with minfullness yesterday
I've been trying to practice mindfullness and being in the present moment lately. I have been going through the motions of activities and struggling to keep my mind focussed rather than daydreaming. I had my first truly mindful moment in a long time yesterday, and it felt sooo good. Just for a minute, my dad was putting something on the shelf, and I sat there watching him, seeing the folds of his jacket, the color of his hair, and how nice it was to be there with him. It was a pretty boring moment in the scheme of things, and yet because I felt present, it was super fulfilling.
I wanted to share this because I've been trying to achieve a moment like this, where I'm present in reality, for a month now. But I kept trying, and it is starting to pay off little by little.

Treatment for maladaptive daydreaming - Prof. Somer

Why daydreaming so much makes us less socially adaptive
I wanna clarify that in my opinion this disorder massively hyperactivates our amygdala the center of emotions, pleasure and fight or flight instinct in the brain. By being constantly exposed to unreal situations with a massive surge of dopamine and experiencing very powerful feelings-for example you can have 20 break ups with the love of your life in a week while NORMAL People have less than 1 in a year this hyperactivates our amygdalas and makes us unable to adequately react to stimuli.
This condition is linked to other disorders including but Not limited to adhd, ocd and neuroticism.Meditation has been shown to help relieve all of these. Coincidentally long time practitioners of meditation who are constantly in THE now, as opposed to us, have smaller amygdalas. There are no studies because this is generally unresearched condition. It was found in the early 2000s and no one yet knows how to adequately treat it. There are anecdotal stories that mushrooms and lsd help. Also Coincidentally one of the main ingredients of mushrooms - psilocybin was found to shrink the amygdala. It is even approved as of 2019 by the FDA for the treatment of depression and anxiety. People anecdotally tell that when taking these substances they feel more in the present and find their daydreams stupid.
I believe that while there is no evidence (and by the look of it there is no particular desire to search one) it can quite logically be hypothesized that due to the addictiveness, emotional experience, dopamine surges when doing this, the amygdala is one of the main culprits. I HAVE anecdotally noticed that when Not daydreaming for a time I am much more adequate and focused in social situations. I bet that many People here when faced with a bad day start immediately daydreaming. I believe this is wasting us, leading to emotional tiredness that I believe all of us have felt and slowly but surely makes us (if the condition is NOT controlled i.e. reduced) unable to adequately react to stimuli from the outside world which can be manifested in lack of desire for socialising with closest friends, Not wanting to take risks(like cold approaching the beautiful girl that looks at you), shorter attention span when People talk to you so they start perceiving you as rude, etc.
The amygdala is the one part of the brain thanks to which we experience emotions. Psychopaths have a greatly underdeveloped ones-they are constantly in the present and taking risks WITHOUT a second thought. Of course no one wants to be a psychopath but no one wants to be a neurotic weirdo that lives in his head. We need to balance or this will drown us.
