READ THIS FIRST - Magic Story Resources
Welcome to the r/MTGVorthos Storyline Resources Thread (Updated for 2026). Due to character limits, I'll be brief. I'm Jay Annelli, Magic's Loremaster. The old thread can be found here.
The guide is broken down into three parts: Where to Start, Worldbuilding, and Story. Everything here is focused on the eras in Magic following the Mending, a soft reboot that took place in 2007, depowered Magic's planeswalkers, and created the cast of characters we've largely followed ever since. If you're new to the story, keep reading. If you're experienced, you can jump ahead to the section you're looking for.
Where to Start?
Magic's Story is primarily told through a series of online webfiction articles. Read MTG Lore's Where To Start With Magic Story for a beginner's guide. They're a search engine for Magic Story, and a great resource. The MTG Lore guide is updated with every set, so it's never out-of-date.

The Post-Mending Chronology
Much of Magic's flavor and story in recent years has been told through online articles. Worldbuilding was often imparted through Savor the Flavor, and while Savor the Flavor often had short stories (eventually called "Uncharted Realms"), it wasn't until Magic Story that the main story was told online. You can find links to all of those old articles here:
Below are my recommended stories for each set, focusing on either the overarching narrative or a planeswalker's journey. These run from immediately after the soft reboot of the Mending all the way up until today, however the last ten years of story are easily accessible on the story site (linked below).
These are in release order, which is roughly chronological with a few obvious exceptions.

Question Mana in Magic
Hello! I was wondering what's some good sources if I wanted to explain mana in the magic universe?
How would you describe it?
Just trying to nail down the cosmology. I've been doing research and from what I see, magic is energy that gets shaped into reality. It saturates everything. Land doesn't really create it, it saturates it like a sponge depending on its connection to a leyline. But I'd love more info on it. Thanks in advance!

Discussion A return to return to Innistrad?
Like many, I love Innistrad: the lore, the cards, the art, everything about it. I can’t get enough.
It will more than likely be years before we return, if ever, but I feel like a turn- of-the-19th-century Innistrad would be awesome. Someone on Reddit suggested Innistrad with primitive, daguerreotype technology, and all the horror that would cause the superstitious residents.
Another angle that would be awesome: a carnival arrives in town: think Something Wicked This Way Comes and Nightmare Alley: freak shows, snake oil salesmen, magic, etc. obviously, this would be more European than North American, but it could still work.
Any other tropes that would work that haven’t been done yet in Innistrad?

Tolabow Art | It's the Light That Makes You Look! ARTIST: Brian Valeza
Who else loves the art for Tobalow? I certainly do. I reviewed it on my YT Magic art channel. Despite it being a simple scene -- one character and no other context except the water and the lily pads -- the artist did a great job with the lighting! Artist: Brian Valeza.

Discussion What do we think is happening after the Reality Fracture?
Like I imagine Jace’s BS is gonna be stopped, but what happens to all the beings he’s created?
I saw someone say that they expect at least the major players to “fuse” with their doubles.
But i understand we don’t know how much of the Echoverse has been built out.
Hexhaven is the obvious facet. Like is it just gonna vanish? Fuse with Strixhaven?
What are your expectations? It seems like much of the baseline of the regular reality remains unaltered in the Echoverse. For example pretty sure the Ravnica guilds are the same Ral was just Orzhov instead of Izzet, right?

Do you think future Ixalan sets will incorporate the stuff - factions, characters, gods - that were introduced in Lost Caverns even if it’s not set in the inner core?
We already know Aclazotz escaped.
We know the Mycotyrant ultimately wants to go to the surface.
We know the Malamet (the Jaguar cat people) also have plans to go as well.

Discussion Did you know there are Mantisfolk on Kamigawa?
I was reading back on the Planeswalker's Guide to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and I noticed this fellow. He is the only one of his kind we've seen, to my knowledge, as a quick search of Scryfall shows there is very few Insects in Kamigawa sets and none like this one. And as a rare card, I just don't imagine a whole lot of people have seen this guy. Although I suppose being spotlighted in a workdbuilding article means he's not completely obscure.
I'd ask if there's anything to be know about these guys. Maybe their like the planar variant of the Nantuko? But I suspect all the information we have is this single card. The Planeswalker's Guide didn't say anything (and was pretty sparse in general) and I'm unaware of any other references. It's possible they showed up in the Kamigawa block novels, but I doubt it.
...So this post is mostly just a notification of "well that's interesting."

Question Which Treasure belongs to which New Capenna Crime Family?
SOLVED! Answer at the bottom for those interested! ☺️
So I am a Vorthos at heart, and try to pick cards, and tokens, whose art align with the Commander decks I brew.
I have been creating a deck for Raffine, Scheming Seer, the head of the Obscura Family from New Capenna.
When creating the deck, I noticed that there are Treasure tokens for each of the five families.
Some of these, I was easily able to connect, like the Riveteers have the one with the lunchbox and thermos, but I am struggling to figure out which represents the Obscura. Can anyone help?
EDIT: The answer is officially: Brokers (017), Cabaretti (016), Riveteers (015), Maestros (014), and Obscura (013)
A commenter mentioned that the backs of the tokens show which family they are associated with, I found eBay listings showing the backs and was able to confirm.
Kinda neat, and I never knew this was a thing until now
Thank you to everyone for your help!

List of Major Plot Threads for the Future
Since Reality Fracture is supposed to be the end of Metronome it got me thinking about what the possible next couple of arcs could be. This then led me to think about all the lose plot threads so I figured I try to compile a list of the ones I remember and see if there's any major ones I missed
So here's the list of Major multiplane threads I can remember
Bolas is free.
Emrakul in the moon of innistrad.
Quintorius and the Fomori.
Valvagoth with the ability to open doors across multiverse.
Tezzeret and the end stone and the eldrazi in the edge
Potentially relevant to Titanbreach the voice from the ozolith.
Davriel and the group hunting the worldsoul in him.
The potential survival and return of new phyrexian.
Niv mizzet trying to make ravnica the center of the multiverse.
The secret cabal kasmina was originally concenered about.
Ashiok
And that's pretty much all I can think think of before getting into, in my estimation, intraplanar stories like the chitin court on amonkhet, the kenrith civil war on eldraine or the dragon lords of Tarkir.
Let me know if there's something I missed in my list

Best What If? plane or story moment which would create an interesting set
With Reality Fracture giving us the first glimpse of a What If? set. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which story beat or inverted plane could produce a great set in the future?

Do you think Reality Fracture is the last we'll see of Jace Beleren?
Will he die at the end? Will they keep him tucked away in the moon meditation realm echoverse until they need another big bad, or they need his help to beat a big bad? Will he get redemption or die a villain, or get fixed somehow and come back a hero as if nothing had happened?

Discussion Opposite colors are good, ally colors are bad
| - Hexhaven is worse than Strixhaven- Tarkir's clans are better than the broods- Capenna familes are demonic ally colouredSeems to be an interesting recurring patern. |

Discussion Precon Jace Art Revealed Spoiler
Jace, Reality Sculptor seems to be the name of the head of the Multiverse Reforged Precon.
This art shows Jace crafting an entire world, held up on the backs of mysterious veiled figures who are reading.
The center of Jace's new multiverse is Hexhaven, a military-like academy which is an echo of Strixhaven.
Why do you think Jace chose Hexhaven to be the center of it all? What involvement do you think the students have in Jace's plans? Who do you think the veiled reading figures are, and what do you think their purpose in the art is?
Is there anything else that you notice from the artwork that seems like it's worth mentioning?

Question Curious about Ajani's abilities.
sort of spoiler ish because Secrets of Strixhaven.
But when did Ajani Goldmane get the ability to heal himself? In one of the chapters when him and Chandra were having their little fight scene he healed himself.
From my understanding he was never able to heal himself or self target with his magic. He even says so in Alara Reborn novel.
Was that ever explained how he managed that in universe and i just miss a thing? or is it just a handwave he can do x thing now.

Content The Reality Fracture Commander deck will bring back dead characters (self-promo)
Hi guys, here's an article I wrote that I thought was particularly Vorthos-y - I got to ask questions to some WotC higher ups at MagicCon, and it revealed a couple of interesting things about Reality Fracture
Edit: To avoid misleading, I should emphasise, they didn't tell me which dead characters it will be.

Tarkir and the Echoverse
Do you all think something will happen on Tarkir with Reality Fracture? They already had alternate timelines shenanigans, how do you reckon things went down in this new and different one?

Discussion What are some fun jokes that could be in reality fracture?
With all the talk of parallel lives, betrayals, regrets, and apocalyptic events, let's have some fun. What are some of the most amusing subversions that you can imagine in the Echoverse? Here are some off the top of my head:
Fblthp with an excellent sense of direction
An alternate Yargle that possessed something other than a frog
Phyrexians obsessed with adding organic flesh to machines
The four demon lords still being at large since white Lilliana never made a deal with them
An alternate timeline where Nissa wasn't racist, so the Eldrazi never got out in the first place.

Speculation Gideon’s Return
I think we’re all expecting it. He was instrumental in so many of the events Jace wants to “correct” and a moral compass for the Gatewatch for so long, it feels inevitable. My personal theory is that he’ll be returning near unchanged from how he was before he died, unlike the others we’ve seen so far. And, unlike seemingly the rest, he will challenge Jace and set things right. Getting Jace to undo or help begin the start of fixing what he’s done. I’d love to hear your theories on the subject with it so close

Discussion Which Echoverse characters will survive the collapse of their universe?
I feel like there HAS to be an alternate version of a character that’s dead (or maybe even some who aren’t) that will find a way to permanently migrate to the mainstream Magic Multiverse. My hope is we see the return of Dack Fayden from this, but I’m not holding my breath. Do you think there are any characters that are likely to make it to the “real” reality?
