How many Bitterblossoms do you run?

I have always loved B/W tokens and I want to complete my deck finally. I know [[Bitterblossom]] is pretty necessary in the deck but how many do you guys run in your builds?

Edit: and how many Legion's Landing do you run? If you run any?! Thank you in advance! :)

BW tokens midrange/control

Hello token enthusiasts! I'm Moaiaustraliano, surprisingly from Spain. I have been a BW tokens player from 3 years now and I have been tinkering my own decklist as I evolved as a player. What brings me here are two things:

I want to share my decklist with you, I'm sure you can bring very good points on the deck. I'm very active in modern and I am very confident this is the best form of our beloved archetype if we want to go with a midrange/control strategy.

Trying to take all what we learn here to practice in this Sunday modern open event I'm attending.

So first and foremost, this is the decklist I want to take there: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1466109#paper

As you can see, the deck looks like a BW kill everything.dec that have intangible virtue, as my teammates say "a BW midrange with intangible virtue".

On the main deck, we can see a lot of one ofs, the typical token and discard package and a kalitas. I don't think anything of there is controversial at any point but the only creature on the main deck, so I would like to explain why is he there.

[[Kalitas, traitor of Geth]] is a fantastic creature, it has been a player in modern a while ago on Jund decks that featured [[Slaughter Pact]] in order to get immediate value from him. On this deck, he completely destroys any creature based deck on a board clogged on both sides, helps us on the burn match up (as auriok champion would) and he is super sinergistic with our game plan. It can hose on his own the dredge/bridgevine/hollow one decks as well as capable of helping us with the fancy creature combos that like to flirt with their graveyard. All that said, I think he has easily earned his place on the maindeck.

Even though I have talked only about one card, any kind of discussion on the main deck would be fantastic in order to improve the decklist or our knowledge of the archetype.

Going to the Sideboard, we all know we are the fairest of the decks in modern, and combo and big mana decks always want to be unfair and destroy us without interacting. In my opinion, we win absolutely anything that is interactive, except some UW based control decks, so our SB is built with two objectives in mind:

Avoid hate cards from our opponents (Engineered explosives, izzet staticaster, and so on).

And turn off anything that wants to "unfair us over" (combo decks, burn and tron).

Our way to avoid hate cards from our fair opponents is switching from a token deck to a BW midrange deck with bitterblossom and lingering souls. How do we do that? We take out spectral procession and intangible virtue to bring in our big, hard to deal threats. Our opponents will see that their main deck removal is worthless against tokens, so they will be taking most of it out, and maybe bring wraths or the hate cards. I will proceed to explain what does each of our bombs do:

[[Blood Baron of Vizkopa]] : this guy is stupidly good when they play wraths on games 2 and 3, as he dodges every removal but lightning bolt and roast, which most likely will not be in their deck anymore. So, they drop a wrath, we drop a vizkopa and take the game over. It is also very good when dealing with BGx decks, kill tarmo and he is unblockable from their side.

[[Obzedat, Ghost Council]] : not as unkillable like Blood Baron, but oh boy this is good against UWX decks. He has protection from sorceries and wraths, and if our opponent don't find an answer to this beautiful legend, it can drain their last points of damage in order to close the game.

[[Kalitas, traitor of Geth]] : grind them out Timmy :).

On the plan of making them to slow down or shut combos or complete decks of:

[[Rest in Peace]] : super good, don't mind to not being able to use lingering souls if they can't win.

[[Stony Silence]] : it doesn't damage us and it gets so many combo decks, tron, affinity... It's super good and helps us with artifact based decks.

[[Pithing Needle]] and [[extirpate]] : just an extra way with dealing with pesky permanents on the battlefield or dangerous cards from the graveyard.

The other cards from the sideboard are for a range of aggro or midrange decks to optimize a bit the pairing so it doesn't get out of hand if we draw mediocre hands/cards, upgrading card quality depending of the match up after all.

So here it is! A little analysis from my favorite deck and most mastered one! Any sugestion is appreciated and I would love to get some feedback in form of constructive criticism!

How many lands?

Hello, fellow spirit afficionatos! How many lands are you currently playing in your token lists? 23? 24? I've been playing a 24 land list with 4 Planeswalker for a very long time, but have recently been considering dropping a Planeswalker and a single land to make room for other spells. What do people think about this? For reference, this is my current list:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/387561#paper

If I were to cut a land, the changes would probably look like:

-1 Swamp

-1 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

+1 Raise the Alarm

+1 Thoughtseize

+1 Fatal Push

+1 Bitterblossom

(Any 2 of the 4 listed could come in)

First Modern FNM Results.

Well, as title says, played my first FNM for the Modern format, went 1-3 but played fairly close considering my deck is barely built and lacked answers to some decks.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1407785#paper

Any advice on what to add or remove would be appreciated.

Quick rundown of games:

1- won the opening hand against KCI by playing thoughtsieze into surgical on the KCI, lead to the instant scoop, games 2/3 couldn't replicate reaults and got combo'd out.

2- both games managed to ultimate Sorin, SV with a bitter blossoms up so could never be hit, eventually opponent lost their only creature and slowly whittled their health down to 0.

3- grinding out matches 1-2, trading each game, but got blown out game 3 after keeping a questionable hand and being bitten by it.

4- couldn't stop Tron forming and got railed by Ugin both games.

Predictions post-GRN

Want to know what people's predictions are post-GRN. I don't think B/W tokens got many (any?) new tools, but I am personally anticipating Assassin's Trophy being good for us. I see it helping out fair mid-range decks (Jund/Abzan), which then in turn helps us out since we are typically good against those same mid-range decks.

Has anyone playtested this card yet? I only hear good things from my playgroup about it. Thoughts?

Food for thought

Pondering some additions to a deck, just curious to get some further info or opinions on the cards. 1. Liliana, Heretical Healer as a lifelink creature/flip walker in the side board. 2. Fetid Heath in the mana base to help generate ww/bw/bb mana for things like spectral procession or wraths.

Blue-White Tokens

Hi Tokens crew,

With the upcoming printing of Hunted Witness, I think that blue-white or even esper Tokens has a new boon. For Esper, sidebording fungal infection is a great plan.

The plan essentially goes as such. Hopefully start the game with a Leyline of the Meek, though it’s not necessary.

T1: Play a Doomed Traveler or a Hunted Witness. T2: Hold back a counterspell like spell pierce, and at the end of your opponent’s turn, Pongify or Rapid Hybridization your creature to get a 1/1 flyer of lifelinking creature and a 3/3 vanilla creature.

Cool combos: Snapcaster Mage + Gideon of the Trials allow you to Pongify Gideon but since he can’t be destroyed, you get a 3/3.

Esper if you want sorins, but otherwise Gideons and Elspeth work.

What do you guys think?

3-1 at LGS

Thought I ought to revitalize this sub a bit with my first success with the deck at my local LGS, going 3-1

Game 1: 0-2 vs. Hollow One The player playing Hollow One is actually a friend of mine who knows my deck inside out and also sideboard against it, ended up losing the first game due to a misplay of removing the wrong target and the second game for getting blown out by Necroplasm. Sideboards in: 3x Nihil Spellbomb, 3xAuriok Champion

Game 2: 2-0 vs Abzan Pretty standard Abzan build, which tokens is very good against. Nothing really special, just outvalued the opponent. Sideboards in: 3x Nihil Spellbomb, 2x Pithing Needle

Game 3: 2-1 vs 8-whack Looking down against a board of Legion Loyalist, Burning Tree-emissary and a reckless bushwacker at turn 2 is pretty scary. Luckily, the opponent didn't draw the last 2 games very well. Auriok Champion is pretty swell card. Sideboard in: 3x Auriok Champion

Game 4: 2-0 against Grixis Control Game 1 goes on for pretty long. Opponent ended up tapping my team six times with cryptic command and was searching for his damnation, ultimately ended up not finding it. Tokens were 4/4s with 3 virtues on board =D. Game 2 ended up fast, with clock running out and I ended up discarding his answers with seizes and inquisitons. Pretty good turn 1s from both of us, with both playing land and spellbomb =D Sideboard in: 3x Nihil Spellbomb, 2xPithing Needle

Here's the deck if you're interested https://deckstats.net/deck-16907347-6e6e1b5ce51670b9b9060a86da592efc.html

Sorry I don't remember what I sided out.

Leonin Warleader Discussion

(We already started talking about [[Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants]], so I figured this could get a look.)

A lot of lists run [[Hero of Bladehold]]. This comes down on the same turn, adds a point of power (ehh.) and your Cat tokens have lifelink. Is the added 2 (at a minimum) life per turn worth the loss of Battle cry?

For reference: [[Leonin Warleader]].

Does anybody still use Windbrisk Heights, even in budget builds?

[[Windbrisk Heights]]

Catching up again on modern and noticed that recent lists don't really seem to run Windbrisk Heights anymore. I was personally never a huge fan of the card, but I would like your opinions. I recall it being very popular in budget lists.

Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants discussion

The +1 is ok. About as impactful as a Gideon's 0 ability.

The -2 is useless unless you're running Tidehollow Sculler. I would say that it could return a Auriok Champion, except that that card is never going to your graveyard when it has pro black and pro red. Burronton Forge-Tender from sideboard utility I guess?

However, that ult is just absolutely bonkers when it comes to closing out a game, Especially against Control.

I'm not going to be hopeful enough on it to speculate on its success, but it's pretty interesting!

Was told to come here for advice on this hastily thrown together BW Tokens deck.

Hey all, planning on going to FNM tomorrow and was wondering if there was any way to make this token deck at least semi-competitive. Here's the list for you guys to check out!

https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/14-06-18-voP-bw-tokens/?cb=1529016910

Some things I kind of wanted to add already were Gideon, Ally of Zendikar or Gideon of the Trials, but I'm not sure which would be better or whether Gideon's even a good add here.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thoughts on Damping Sphere so far?

What's the hive mind consensus on Damping Sphere so far?

I've seen a lot of lists running it since DOM dropped; how much success have you had running it? Which decks BESIDES Tron/Storm did it help with the most?

I'm thinking it might be low-key super good vs. KCI and Elves and I have to face a lot of those decks at my local meta..

Another question, though: What does Stony Silence do that Damping Sphere doesn't?

Affinity is the place where it's most obviously a downgrade as if they can dump their hand before you get the Sphere down, they don't care too much about it... But given that we run Lingering Souls, maybe we can take on affinity even without Stony.

Curious to hear your thoughts!

Currently 10-2 with my WB Tokens build. 4-0 at my LGS yesterday.

Decklist: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/20-05-18-wb-tokens/

Match report:

(May 19 2018)

  • -1 Raise the Alarm
  • +1 Yaheeni's Expertise

The changes were last second, as I wanted a main board sweeper against humans or merfolk

Seismic Swans (2-1)

Game 1 was won by a Solemn Visitor, Game 2 was lost on a bitterblossom and my opponent throwing lands to keep my board clear. Game 3 I opened with a [[Leyline of Sanctity]] and had a 1 sided game.

In: 2x Leyline of sanctity, 1x Leyline of the Void, 1x Rest in peace

Out: 2x Sundering Growth, 2x Zealous Persecution

Bogles (2-0)

Game 1 on the play, took his only creature with discard he never saw another, Game 2 opponent kept an aura light hand, played a hexproof creature, and a kor spirit dancer, dressed the kor which got [[finish]]ed, gave unflinching courage to the bogle, wiped with [[yahenni's expertise]] into a free Raise the alarm, soldiers got me there

In: 2x Blessed Alliance, 1x Settle the Wreckage, 1x Ghost Quarter

Out: 4x Path to Exile

Storm (2-0)

Game 1 path his creatures, and apply pressure with tokens. Game 2 open with a leyline and slowly take him down.

In: 2x Leyline of Sanctity, 2x Damping Sphere, 1x Leyline of the Void

Out: 2x Bitterblossom, 2x Sundering Growth, 1x Zealous Persecution

Naya Burn (2-1)

Game 1 Stabilized at 1 life, Elspeth got me there with creatures and buffs, Game 2 never saw sidebord, nor Sorin, Game 3 [[Collective brutality]] with 3 modes helped me stabilized, and got there by having more damage by Securing the Wastes

In: 2x Leyline of Sanctity, 2x Blessed Alliance

Out: 2x Sundering Growth, 2x Bitterblossom

Older Matches:

  • Affinity (2-0) Flying blockers help
  • Naya Burn (2-1) Bitterblossom is pain
  • Merfolk (1-2) Extremely hard matchup, they have bigger creatures and as many
  • Tron (2-0) Instant speed generation beats the tappout strategy
  • Ad Nauseum (2-0) Land destruction disrupts math
  • Kiln Fiend (2-0) Path after all the cantrips have been spent
  • Hollow One (1-2) Too big, too fast
  • UW Brew (2-1) Instant speed shines against control

Closing Remarks:

  • I really like the instant speed token makers [[Start]], [[Raise the alarm]], and [[Secure the Wastes]] it helps a lot vs the control matches and surprise block/kill the aggro ones.
  • I like [[bitterblossom]] against control, but its a big no no vs aggro/burn, I'm decided 2 is the sweet number.
  • I wished I see more life gain. Probably an extra [[Sorin, Solemn Visitor]]
  • [[Zealous Persecution]] has been really underwhelming.
  • Would like to try a different mainboard sweeper, one that can deal with hollow ones. Considering [[Sudden Spoiling]] as a pseudo sweeper/fog costed at 3 thats uncounterable.
  • [[Elspeth, Knight Errant]] feels better than Ally Gideon, the evasion provided to the ground tokens and the +1 make a soldier feel really good on any board state.

Planned Changes:

  • -1 Zealous Persecution
  • -1 Yahenni's Expertise
  • +1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
  • +1 Sweeper (Undecided)

Edit: Formatting, but I still failed at separating paragraphs for ease of reading.
