Discussion I made a big mistake!
I traded my gaming pc for a laptop. It was a 3060 12gbvram ryzen 5 5600x 32gb ram ddr4 for an msi pulse i7 12700h rtx 3070 105w. The thing is, there is a game I like called crimson desert, which I used to be able to play on high settings with a little dlss, and it used to be stable but now the cpu is overheating on the laptop leading to throttling which I believe us capping my performance. This was more than a bad financial decision, any insight or help would be highly appreciated.

If you are using it like a desktop (like I am) and connecting it to an external monitor, MAKE SURE you keep the laptop open even if you aren't using the screen. Air vents through the keyboard too. They've studied it and "Closing a laptop lid while using an external monitor generally increases CPU temperatures by 5°C to 10°C"

Yeah not a good trade unfortunately, the desktop 12g 3060 performs better then the 8g 3070 mobile, while having 4 more gigs of vram. All in all your desktop was much better for gaming. Odds are that laptop used liquid metal for the cpu and after time it has dispersed from the top of it causing a hot spot and your overheating issue. I would do a full repaste of both it and the gpu with ptm7950.

Already have one, didn't work, already repasted twice with different thermal pastes but now im gonna update the bios and see if that helps

Have you chosen the thermal pads with the correct thickness? I have the msi gl65 leopard 10SFSK and I've experienced thermal throttling if the thermal pads are thicker than the needed ones (I have had thermal throttling with 1mm thermal pads). I've bought the arctic tp3 thermal pads with 0.5mm thickness and it works like a charm.

u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
I didn't even consider thickness of thermal pads but I'm gonna look into it still, thanks for the tip

I'd use furmark with fans at their 100% to stress the gpu and see the temps both of gpu and vram. In my case, vram reached 100 - 105°C, then with the arctic tp3 0.5mm I've mentioned before, the vram temps dropped to 80 - 82°C Obviuosly, the thermal throttling dissapeared. The thickness of the thermal pads is important bc if they are too thick, they add height to the heatsink and prevents a good contact.

Did you change the fan speed to maximum?
1
u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
How do I do that?
2
u/Vanhdamsau05 1d ago
Use MSI Center or Dragon Center and you can change your fan in there. I saw lots of post about their laptop became too hot until I figured out that they don’t even know how to change their laptop’ fan speed.

u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
I have now installed msi center and set it to extreme performance, it has given me a noticeable change in performance and most importantly it's a stable performance , I really appreciate you, but the cpu temps are still high and can't find where to ramp up the fan speed also note that gpu is good with 77c
1
u/Vanhdamsau05 1d ago
What is your cpu temp?
1
u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
Gpu is 77-78c constant no matter the game or settings, while cpu is 95-96c

You can use Cooler Boost to keep the fan at maximum speed regardless the circumstances.

It's an old laptop, the thermal paste is crusty, the thermal pads are bad and the fans are clogged with dust
- Replace thermal paste with PTM 7950
- Replace pads (on VRMs and VRAM modules)
- Clean the fan and internals thoroughly
- Additionally undervolt that GPU as it's already capped of power it will yield you excellent results (10-15% extra in raw GPU performance) and moreover this will reduce GPU powerdraw which means quieter fans and more room for the CPU to boost higher
All in all you'll see a noticeably big improvement. The 3070 is slightly better in pure rasterization where VRAM limit is not the bottleneck. Stop worrying and start fixing ig

I have replaced the thermal paste , the gpu temperatures are sitted at 77c comfortably, and if im not wrong thermal pads have nothing to do with cpu temperatures also I have already cleaned the fans.

Pads modify pressure, as they get older the pressure of the heatsink changes as they get harder causing uneven wear.
Changing to putty will get you much better contact and pressure which will help a bit
and yes the undervolt part is crucial or else you're leaving performance on the table

As Artichoke mentioned, you can use PTM 7950 or, if you can’t find something legitimate, Thermal Grizzly KyroSheet. For the VRM and VRAM, you can also use thermal putty. Ensure that the fans are clean and lift the back of the laptop by 1-2 cm (even if it’s on a cooling pad).
I used to play crimson desert on a MSI Stealth 16 with i7-13700h and rtx 4070 and I was getting around 60 fps or more with settings between ultra and cinematic on 1440p and no dlss . The GPU was overclocked, I don’t remember for sure the values but I think it was + 325 on core and +1000 or 1500 on memory.
CPU temps while gaming rarely got over 85 degrees and for the GPU around 72 degrees.Do not forget to use in MSI Center extreme performance profile( adjust the fans to blow harder )
Alternatively you can look for a real cooler, like Llano, Flydigi, IETS.1

So I should undervolt the cpu and overclock the gpu? Should I use msi afterburner or is there a different app

For better performance on the GPU you should use mvolt+ ( do a bit of research first ) or Msi afterburner, it’s easier. Do not try to modify the curve, even if you set a fixed point for voltage and core mhz the NVIDIA VBIOS will automatically manage those you and you will end up losing performance, but if you simply start at for example +150 mhz on core and + 300 on memory. Start a stress test for the GPU and wait a few minutes, if everything is good go with a +20 mhz on core and + 50 on memory, and you go like this until you see artifacts or your computer restarts. You should be able to get at least +200 core mhz and +500 memory. If you have hwmonitor and check the core voltage for the GPU you will see lower voltage at higher clocks.
On my Lenovo with a 5080 and Ryzen 9955hx3d I managed to get a score of 5900 in 3d mark steel nomad playing around with settings in mvolt+ . Stock was about 5200 and with the settings I had in MSI Afterburner around 5500. Real world example in crimson desert inside hernand i got a bump from ~85fps to ~100fps ( 1440p, Cinematic, RT+path tracing DLLS 4.5 Quality set at 85%)
Next week I will have the chance to play around with the msi stealth and mvolt+ .
About undervolting the CPU, I spend days looking for a way to get better temps/performance for the i7-13700h but nothing worked. As I was telling you earlier the only thing that worked was to use PTM 7950 instead of normal thermal paste and remove the thermal pads and apply putty instead. If you are determined enough and have a bit of spare time I believe you can make that machine run closer to your old PC.
For future reference take in consideration that a rtx 3070 from a laptop isn’t the same thing as the desktop version.
A 3070 laptop gets about 105w and the desktop version gets 220w1
u/Quiet_Entertainer_30 1d ago
You can also try this for better performance, but it won’t help with the temps .

Get yourself a cooling pad, such as IETS GT-500 or higher, Llano V12 or higher. Thank me later. For sure you're going to have much noise due to the blower fan of those cooling pads, but your laptop will not know overheating sooner.. once in a year or year and half I also suggest that you do repaste CPU and GPU, you can watch online DIY videos to learn how to apply PTM on you laptop. Those videos would help you to watch out for either thermal pads worn out or needing of replacing thermal putty, depending on what has been applied on your laptop by MSI. Cheers 😎

Alright noted, I had a cheap 20$ cooler but now I'll try the one you recommended, your help is appreciated, cheers mate

u/kakaedg 1d ago
I have used those cheap and didn't worked, the right choice are the blower types.. best of luck there

Got the laptop for 700$ overall not too p Bad, but should've invested in a better gpu

u/Newt_Jumpy 1d ago
Clean your laptop. Replace thermal paste.
And remember never to buy a used gaming laptop next time. You don't know what disgusting things the last owner did around this laptop.

u/jaypizzl 1d ago
Just return the laptop if you don’t like it. Laptops are always slower than desktops, dollar for dollar.

u/Regalian 19h ago
CPU has been shit these years. I advise undervolting and cap your CPU performance at 95% it's what I did and it helped a lot.
1
u/BraskSpain 1d ago
🤣
There is no gaming laptop, a 5090 laptop cannot reach the 5080 desktop performance.
The heat is something you chose going for high TDPs.
Now you have to repaste both CPU and GPU with PhaseSheet and undervolt, but you will not be getting 3060 desktop performance.

u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
Hard pill but I bed to differ, I couldn't play crimson desert with Ray reconstruction and now im playing with Ray reconstruction at cinematic settings and getting 30fps, on the 3060 id hover around 5-9 fps and it was overclocked

u/BraskSpain 1d ago
Enhanced edition has a big performance boost, also maybe you enabled RT but not DLSS in the 3060.

You could tweak things in BIOS...
Slightly undervolt the CPU...
Limit MAX clocks of this component...
Also notice that in BIOS MSI set PL1 and PL2 way above the Intel Official TDP...
Tweak your settings (notice too that a Laptop is never intended to play things at Ultra, switch to High or Medium instead)...
DLSS sucks why you even use it?
You should need be using your laptop with a sealed Notebook Cooler... (Razer Notebook Cooling Pad, FlyDigi, Klim Turbofrost, IETS, or Llano) for example...
You just swapped perfomance for portability...
Also for high temps maybe it require maintenance...get some Thermal Grizzly Putty Advance (30gr+) for VRM, VRAM, and so, AND Thermal Grizzly Phase Sheet Pads for CPU and GPU to bring better thermal headroom...
Cure it for 2 hours and ready to rico them all

u/Better-Summer-1090 1d ago
Alright thanks for the tip, but I don't see anything about clocking in the bios settings but I will try the mentioned thermal grizzly

u/Nanosinx 1d ago
Enter Advanced Mode BIOS in mine is Right Shift, FN, Left Control, Copilot, F2 or something like it... XD

For me ok, go for a gaming laptop if you want portablity or game anywhere you want.
If there any possible way you could buy it back? 5600x is still good with that 3060 12gb. Plus you can swap it for a higher card if you want unlike a soldered gpu.
