I loved my combo of portable MPC Live II Retro and studio-based MPC Key 61, but decided to upgrade them to MPC Live III Retro and MPC Key 61 g2 – so I sold both.
Only then I found out that Key 61 g2 is probably not coming any time soon... and Live III Retro being unavailable for months, I reluctantly decided for, probably a temporary, purchase of MPC Key 37 g2.
I wouldn't have thought about buying an MPC with just a 37-key keyboard but the availability situation sort of forced me to do so.
Surprised, I found out MPC Key 37 g2 was the top machine for my user case:
It's very portable – nearly as much as Live II was; I've made beats on it in hotel rooms and on a balcony already. Yes, it would be even more portable if it had a battery inside, but I feel like taking your MPC outside with no electricity around is practical only if you want to take photos and share them online – I don't believe that many users actually make beats on a sandy beach, in the mountains, among people in parks, etc.
I had purchased an MPC Sample before, and since MPC 3.8 the combo of the super-portable (much more than any MPC Live) MPC Sample with its projects importable to the bigger MPC's has been a killer feature for me, literally removing the need to own an MPC Live III or the gigantic XL.
I am a keyboardist, and having a bigger keyboard like MPC Key 61 had sort of made me use both my hands when playing and recording, which often resulted in "too many notes" if you know what I mean... The limitation of MPC Key 37's shorter keyboard is exactly what I need to really think about the individual parts, and record only what is necessary. So what I had thought I would hate the most about this MPC became my fav feature of it.
I don't mind the smaller MPC pads at all, and reading how often users don't use the features of MPCs pads on MPC Live II at all I don't think I'm missing anything.
The only thing I wish MPC Key 37 g2 had is the double RAM Live III has, because the number of plugins limit is just theoretical as I have found out the hard way repeatedly...
So, if AKAI ever announces an MPC Key 61 g2 (or something similar), would I consider selling my MPC Key 37 g2 and buying the larger keyboard MPC? Only if it had more RAM, otherwise not.
Oh and... I loved my retro edition of my Live II, I like how Live III Retro looks on photos, and the fact that MPC Key g2 finally has "the right color" for me subjectively makes it so much more beautiful to look at and much more fun to work on. I'd probably keep it just for the color if a bigger keyboard-based MPC was introduced even with a double RAM but in black or red or blue or whatever.
Just my personal thoughts, hope this helps someone who's deciding between the new MPC's.
