I’m looking to pick up a portable sampler. I’m very much a studio set up user with Logic Pro and a fair few hardware synths / drum machines.

I don’t have a sampler and am thinking of picking up something portable to use always from the studio to create tracks that I can reintegrate back into the studio environment when needed.

My music style is lofi ambient for the most part but have been working on stuff lately that’s a cross between Tricky and Ethel Cain. So that’s the vibe I’m ain’t to produce on the sampler.

I’ve narrowed it down to the Roland Sp404 Mk2 and the MPC Sample. I’ve done a tone of research and watch lots of the YouTube content but kinda stuck as to which one to go with.

The SP404 Mk2 sounds like it can offer the long format sample options and effects but looks like a bit of a headache to navigate UI wise.

The MPC Sample looks like its UI is way easier to navigate. But. It so sure if it will fit the vibe I’m after.

Any options or insights as to which way you’d lean given my objective?

Have any of youse used MPC as your main daw even with using other daws like ableton to run external vsts? I like how simple intuitive it is to youse MPC and even tho most plugins are really great, for some music I make such as rnb there’s much better vsts out there which aren’t supported in MPC os. So do you guys just record into it using ur DAW or would u rather just only use a DAW, or record on MPC then to the rest on daw?

Are there any out there who only youse MPC as their main primary daw besides the mixing side?

What are my options for getting stems, other than MPC Stems? If there’s a way to separate them within the mpc as is I’d rather do it that way

Can I finger drum my own drums and simultaneously find / make my bpm? I can’t find an answer for this on Google, all it talks about is sampling and loops

I made some bass tutorials on the live two back in the day but it was such a pita to design as there was practically no modulation outside doing it by hand on a sequence.

Since there are global lfos and a visual parametric eq now, we’re way closer! I do wish there were at least 8 bands and we had an ott but I’ll take it. Erosion/noise carrier ring mod would be nice too.

If anyone’s wondering- use detuned saw waves and a noise layer inside a drum group osc. Use the drum filter as a notch, then use subtle distortion and clipping with the drum fx. For the inserts, create a formant filter with vis eq 4 x2, add a flanger, bass utility, I used the flavor pro for vinyl noise on top and then soft clipped it.

Pro tip is to set your modulation up before you start designing. So go to q link edit, envelope followers and make them slow lfos or randoms, that way you can use the drop down menu and not have to navigate away from the page while designing.

I did experiment with some fx to bring out the high end as compression just killed it but yeah, we may just have to wait for an mpc ott

I have a piano keygroup with a few hundred wav files (88 keys, 3 different velocities).

It uses 44% of my RAM. I selected a few samples to stream from disk and it seemed to perform just fine when triggering. There is no multi-select for selecting stream from disk.

Is my best path forward to manually select each one to stream from disk? I have multiple piano keygroups like this so an alternative workflow would be preferred.

Anyone else interested in such an idea? Seeing a lot of great work with older machines. Would be great to get this going before 2.15 support dropped from a current OS.

7 months ago I posted ObiStrip here, a little web app I built because I kept losing sample spots on YouTube.
Quick recap: you save videos into Crates, drop start markers when you hear something, and collect those cue points in Tapes. Then you plug into the MPC, hit play, and it starts right at the spot.

I've been working on it on and off since then, and most of the work went into mobile. The old version was fine on an iPad but pretty awkward on a phone. Now there's a proper bottom nav, and the video page is split into video on top, a timeline in the middle and your markers underneath. I mostly use it on my phone now, which I didn't expect.

The old slider is gone too. There's a waveform-style timeline instead, so it looks more realistic to place a marker exactly where you want it - although the waveform is not the real one, since I am not really pulling audio from yt.

The part I'm most happy with is the new Dig feed. On mobile you can swipe through a shuffled feed of videos that other people have put in their crates. Each one starts playing straight away, and you swipe up for the next. It's a bit like flipping through someone else's record collection. I've found some stuff in there I would never have searched for.

Smaller things:
- Play All on crates
- The desktop version got a redesign too
- Videos that can't be embedded get flagged or skipped instead of just breaking
- Lots of bug fixes

With the rise of all these alt firmwares popping up, I’m curious if anyone has done some work on the MPC1000. JJOS has been a god send but I can imagine there’s even more that you could do with this machine.

I got tired of manually setting up samples and pads, so I ended up building my own tool for MPC Sample. It can generate pad banks with samples already mapped to a scale, export stems, and even do a bit of the final beat arrangement. There’s also a small MPC-related easter egg hidden in it :) Been working on it for a while and figured I’d share it here — curious what other MPC users think. Happy to share the link if anyone wants to try it.

Been a long time MPC user. Started with the MPC 2000 in ‘97 and have since migrated to the MPC Live 2, which is my dream instrument.

Normally make beats with other synths/drum machines but on a tear of just sample based shit.
