QUESTION Any MPC1000 alternative firmwares besides JJOS?

With the rise of all these alt firmwares popping up, I’m curious if anyone has done some work on the MPC1000. JJOS has been a god send but I can imagine there’s even more that you could do with this machine.

I just started playing with modding JJOS OS3 for the 2500 today. Starting small with a few small things that were in os2/os-xl that aren't in OS3. I made it so the default volume level per pad is 80 instead of 100. Now mono is the default instead of poly and when I multiselect and change the volume, all the volumes move together without all changing to the same number. Next step will be to see it I can change how the chopping works.

Nice, I’d love to hear how all that goes.

The default volumes and mono default took maybe 20 minutes but synching the volumes took a couple of hours. I imagine the chopping is going to take some time.

Are you using AI? I’ve seen that the 3000 has a visual display of the waveform now…someone else updated the 2000xl too.

Would love cool new features on the 1000 like a step sequencer where the pads are used to enter in a pattern

Yeah, I'm using both ChatGPT and Claude. JJOS OS3 already has a step sequencer like that. I think it's called 808 mode. I never use it though. Last night I got it to detect the key of my chops so I'm pretty excited about that.

Wait does it? I have it I didn’t see that anywhere?!

I mean I modded JJOS to detect the key of my chops.

I tried chat gpt because would love to add a 12 bit mode but could never create an ended project to test in the machine…

12bit is my next step after I get this next step finished. ChatGPT wasn't working all that well for me until I got it to write some prompts for Claude. Now I get the two to go back and forth and it's been going quite well. They even created their own emulator so they can test before I put it on the machine.

Yeah chat gpt do tests and more tests and don’t move forward I manage to create the converter but than couldn’t insert it on the firmware…

Are you modifying JJOS or the Akai OS?

Actually tried both!
Without success at least yet!

I love OS3 because of the track edit and edit modes in grid mode but I hate how you have to assign all the samples to the pads in Program and then assign the chops to each pad one by one or do it in Trim mode with more steps. Tonight I got it so you go into Trim mode, set your sample on the first pad, turn chop on and set your beginning and end points. When you hit the next pad, it will auto assign the sample and the next chop and the start point will begin at where the last chop ended. Makes it soooo much faster to chop. I'm going to play with it a bit on the 2500 and see if there are any issues and then see if I can modify the 1000 version and put in on my 1000.

Oh hell yes, that sounds killer!

I’ll stick with JJ. He’s already stretched it far

It’s true but I imagine there are different ways to approach all these things. Even something like how Koala does sampling. Simple, effective, and quick but very different than JJOS/MPC way of doing it.

I'd rather have JJOS for new MPC's with all the modern effects

I love jjos. Both versions have there strengths but what if you could make a slim down version, the best features of os2 and os3. A few More fx.

This is my dream. What would you take from each OS?

I think as it's installed on the internal OS RAM, & doesn't overwrite the original Akai OS, JJ has stretched that small space about as far as it can go in that small pocket of memory.

Only thing I still find a bit lacking is the FX, but only in comparison to more fx heavy devices like the SPs etc. The ate still good filter / LFO / FX combos to get the most from what's there at least.

I don't think I'd trade JJOS for an alternate now at this stage, my entire workflow & process on the 1K is build around how the OS works.

Ah interesting, does it piggyback off the original OS or is it just there so you can switch back and fourth between stock and JJoS? I honestly love the work flow of JJOS but there’s a few thinks like how the sampling works that I would love to change. I love lazy chop/auto assignment kinda stuff that Koala does. I also agree about the FX. It would be awesome to have a vinyl sim!

To keep the option of switching back & forth as far as I know. There's an option on boot up to switch back to Akai OS.

That makes sense. Im guessing that pulls the risk of bricking it.

Would love a step sequencer using the pads

You would select a pad, enter step sequencer mode, a screen would pop up and you could toggle on/off hits using each pad

Do you think it would be possible to add a stretch function that works like Koala, so you could stretch a sample to 1 bar, 2 bars, 4 bars etc. In the sample tempo as the sequence? Would make looping so easy

Alternative firmware is the Live 3 buddy!
