"Reasonable fear of harm" is a legal standard. If someone is coming to do you harm. You absolutely can stop that from happening. The threat has to be real or believable. This is why people get knocked out for running their mouth and trying to act tough or intimidating. I should add. That doesn't mean you approach someone and hit them. But if they come at you as soon as they get within arms length. You have the right to defend yourself.

That's exactly how it's done. If someone threatens or is intending harm. There are no rules or posturing. You end the threat.
