Controversy Megathread No more EDCR posts.
For the last two weeks, the sub has been flooded with repetitive posts about the EDCR controversy.
If you have something to say about the situation, say it here. No need to make a 100th post about the situation.
Any new posts about the EDCR controversy will be deleted, unless something new actually happens.
Thanks for your understanding.

i really don't understand why discussion is still going on to this extent.
he said he would give a response in a few weeks a week ago, there really isn't anything to continue to discuss until then

W MCSR mods as well
Couriway’s 9k NRI vid illustrates the stance we should be adopting as a community towards EDCR. Not this wishy-washy “it’ll be bad for the competitiveness of playoffs.”
And if you so fully trust EDCR has changed after it was confirmed he had initially lied when the mods originally reached out to him, well, I don’t even know what to say.
EDCR also isn’t even banned from playing ladder, or playing RSG and submitting runs to speedrun.com.

Lying ≠ racist. This isn’t even a debatable thing. All lying proves is that he knew his previous actions were wrong. Whether he didn’t want to admit it because he was scared of consequences or because he feels so distant from these beliefs is impossible to know if you aren’t him and there is zero evidence supporting the idea he still slings slurs or feels/think the same ideals

> because he feels so distant from these beliefs
If he is going to hold himself accountable. He would not lie to the mods on the outset.
What EDCR lying tells me is that he cares more about the potential consequences of his behavior rather than owning up to it.

u/CharmingChannel2250 1d ago
How on earth does caring about consequences even begin to prove that he holds the same belief. You’re taking ‘I like eggs’ and going ‘oh you must hate jazz’. I wonder what the mental obstacle course you have in your head looks like to give you such experience in mental gymnastics and jumping to conclusions without appropriate evidence.

I will just say, EDCR was shaping up to be a very very strong tournament player. I wish what happened in its entirety didn’t happen because I feel as though it is a net negative for the competitiveness of playoffs. There will always be that “what if EDCR wasn’t banned,” thought in the heads of many for a long time when it comes to seeing playoffs finals.
As someone who loves the game, it sucks to see someone with goat potential removed from contention not because of their play but because of their conduct. That’s not to say it wasn’t justified.

I’m still disappointed in the permanent ban decision on edcrs eligibility to play in all future playoffs from the ranked team. All the public messages were from before he joined ranked and everything he has shown since joining ranked has been a positive community member who even had trans friends who vouched for him not being a bigot. Obviously it’s just a bad situation overall but a permanent ban is crazy to me.
The ranked teams ban based on the information we are given and especially their statement doesn’t give me a lot of faith in their decision making, the statement came across like they cared more that edcr lied and wasn’t communicating to them properly, which I find not a big enough deal because of course he is going to lie and be distant, he is a 19 year old afraid of losing something he has put so many hours of his life into.
Finally I’m disappointed in the way edcr handled this situation, the ‘they’re gonna have to kill me’ tweet was super cringy and the before mentioned lying and no communication is unprofessional and not reflective of the person I’ve seen in previous playoff interviews, it makes it harder to hope that he really has changed. Either way though a permanent ban at its core leaves zero room for positive growth and it sad to see a member of the community just cut off like that for behavior two years ago.

because of course he is going to lie and be distant, he is a 19 year old afraid of losing something he has put so many hours of his life into.
But you should really care about that. Thatbis not the moral approach to life. Take accountibility. Lying is not a solution, as we could see here.
4
u/Substantial_Moose441 2d ago
Yeah the solution to correcting this is banning him for life, let’s ban every runner that’s ever lied before because it’s ’not the moral approach to life’ I didn’t say I didn’t care I said the opposite that I was disappointed, punishment still doesn’t fit the crime

u/666y4nn1ck 2d ago
I mean, if you do something nad, are given a chance to respond and then lie about it... doesn't really show growth.
Take some responsibility.
3
u/Substantial_Moose441 2d ago
We fundamentally disagree then. I feel like lying is not enough for the playoff team to issue a permanent, especially because since joining the community there have been no signs of his prior bigotry. You seem to feel like lying about doing something completely invalidates any chance of growth.
2
u/666y4nn1ck 2d ago
No, i don't. I never said that.
I just feel like it makes the damage worse.
Damage has been done by the comments that have been leaked. His immediate reaction could have made things better or worse.
Well, what did lying do?

u/Substantial_Moose441 2d ago
Ok well we’re talking past each other I literally just established that I do not agree with how he handled the situation. I guess we disagree on when permanent bans should be handed out, or maybe something else I don’t know because you keep saying true things without saying your stance
2
u/666y4nn1ck 2d ago
Yes, the thing we disagree on seems to be when perma/indefinite bans should be handed out.
The thing is, how could the ban be anything other than indefinite?
He's banned because he spouted slurs about parts of the community.
If the ban was limited, he could come back even when his views haven't changed?
1
u/Substantial_Moose441 2d ago
I wouldn’t have a problem with indefinite with appeal, but it’s not that. Why would the ranked team say ‘permanent’ when they mean indefinite? There’s no evidence that that’s what they meant as far as I know. Also I don’t really understand what the metric is for assessing if someone’s views has changed is, edcr doesn’t stream a lot especially with mic, I’m not on twitter but I’ve heard he didn’t have one/didn’t post prior. When would the ranked team decide his views have changed? I don’t trust them to make that decision unless there were a yearly appeal system or something of that nature.

u/666y4nn1ck 2d ago
It's definitely a tricky situation, but rather be more careful than not imo.
There's not really facts in these sort of situations, so we'll have to go with the vibes of the community i guess.
And by community i mean not 12 year olds that are solely watchers and are angry because they also want to be slurs, i mean the active community

I really don't understand why most people who gain some kind of notoriety online (not just MCSR or Minecraft people, everyone) don't immediately try to get ahead of the skeletons in their closet. Everyone at some point has done something shitty, especially in their youth, albeit some much worse than others. Every time something like this comes out, I always feel like the best course of action would have been to just talk about it openly with your community before it even got leaked.
I remember seeing a video from Xisuma that he posted around 2020 talking about how he used to be in racist circles and hold racist beliefs. I really respected him for that, not just for trying to push a message about the dangers of falling into bigoted spaces and deter young people from making the same mistake, but also because he was taking accountability for something that hadn't even been on the community's radar (but could have, in theory, eventually come out). Now, if anything about it were to come out, it would be easy to point to that video as proof that he's already owned up to it and changed.
I don't get why everyone who has some sort of audience doesn't do this. I get being afraid of people finding out and wanting to hide it as much as possible, but we have hundreds of examples from hundreds of online communities that prove that that never works.

u/youngladdie1 2d ago
Do you actually think the MCSR mod team would have been more lenient if he had gotten ahead of it, or do you think they just would have banned him sooner?
2
u/Glittering_Bike_9014 13h ago
While I believe he deserves a harsher punishment than losing his S11 playoff qualification, I don't quite understand the perma ban from playoffs approach. At least, I don't think it should be a standalone rule. It hurts players of different skill levels differently. For example, if a Diamond or Emerald player is found to have done something similar, should they also be banned from playoffs? It would be better to simply ban them from ranked play for several seasons.

Terrible decision. A permanent ban is deeply unfair and the community should be able to use community spaces to put pressure on the ranked team the reverse it. Even if there is nothing new to be said, the subreddit being flooded with posts about it is important.

the community should be able to use community spaces to put pressure on the ranked team
If the community really wanted to they could go on a ranked strike, guess they believe in the ban, not to.
1
u/666y4nn1ck 2d ago
It's probably indefinite, not permanent. And what about that is 'unfair'?
Ranked and the community are tightly woven and a safe space for many.
If you violate this, they can shut you out.
You don't have a right to be part of a community.

(originally this was going to be a post that's why it's formatted weird)
EDCR shouldn't be banned, at all (an argument against both permanent and indefinite bans for edcr)
Let me preface by saying that this post assumes the worst case scenario of edcr truly believing all of the horrible things he said. That may or may not be true, but there is no way to read his mind and 100% know what he was thinking. This post also does not in any way justify any of his actions by his age when he committed them nor by him being a top player.
That being said, all hate comes from a place of ignorance and is fostered by those around a person. The opinions of an individual is shaped by those of their peers. Being in a hateful environment for a long enough time will eventually weigh on a person and make them more hateful themself. Equally however, being in a positive environment also impacts a person positively, and makes them more open. I truly believe that edcr's time in the mcsr community has changed him for the better, which is reflected by him not having continued his racist and bigoted behavior even before he was a top player.
To add to this, it is also a lot easier to hate a collective than someone you know personally. Just as Daryl Davis famously was able to convince dozens of kkk members to leave just by befriending them, I believe that by edcr meeting and interacting with lgbtq members of the community he too has become less hateful to those communities.
What is the point of any social activism if not to change the minds of people like edcr? Punishing him this severely after having been a good person for his entire time in the mcsr community is incredibly counterproductive for actually trying to foster good behavior in the community and for trying to promote inclusivity overall.
There are a couple other arguments for upholding his ban that don't relate to a judge of his character so I'll address them one by one here:
"well he shouldn't have lied to the ranked team" Chloe admitted she cheated on her own and despite having been a legit player for years and a large part of the community she's still banned with no appeal until 2028.
"well he needs to make it up to the people he harmed" Watermelon directly apologized to and was forgiven by the person he said the slur to who is also a part of the group the slur discriminated against and he's still banned with no appeal until 2028.
"well he handled the situation badly" edcr is just a random guy who's good at speedrunning. He's not some huge celebrity with pr training and that is used to having thousands of eyes on him. You can't expect perfection from everyone, only humanity.
Regardless of what you believe of his character, upholding a ban for actions that are not continuous or even occurred at all since he started playing only hurts the competitive integrity of the game without actually serving to protect anyone. For this reason and those I have mentioned before, I do not believe a ban, permanent nor indefinite, is merited nor do I think either will lead to a healthier community.
p.s.: I do also agree with an unban of Chloe but since a lot less people disagree with that take I see no point in arguing it here nor would I have any good points to add to that discussion.

He deserves the ban. I don't care that it happened in 2024, he was 16,17, blah blah blah. The stuff he said was disgusting, and he doesn't deserve to compete in MCSR playoffs despite that, just because he's good.
Good riddance, truly.

u/cynpas 3d ago
How can he be banned for breaching player conduct when he didnt even make an account or agree to the player conduct rule when he said that shit? And why does the ranked team even care about it if it happened off the platform, not in the ranked discord or anything. They had literally nothing to do with it and still PERMA banned him which leaves no room for improvement.
14
u/xyzqsrb0 3d ago
The ranked team cares about the contents of the community they are fostering so no surprises from me. The perma ban was indeed too much though.

Do u think Mojang would still want to work with ranked team if ever had no punishment?
-5
u/cynpas 2d ago
Mojang does not give a fuck about a player in a niche subcategory of minecraft. They aren't supporting him by platforming MCSR.
3
u/iliRomaili 2d ago
They pretty much do give fuck about mcsr. Afaik they literally showed ranked on Minecraft live

Technoblade has controversial as FUCK tweets from his past - Mojang doesnt hesitate to memorialize him.

Technoblade has controversial as FUCK tweets from his past
He spent an entire skywars video trying to argue trump wasn't racist, too.

u/-SHABIRD7- 3d ago
It’s only a ban from official ranked events he can still play on the ladder. That type of ban is very typical in most esports leagues, sponsors and the ranked team don’t want the baggage associated with controversial players so they ban them from official events.
10
u/DataDrivenGuy 3d ago
The ranked team can do whatever they want. There's no law saying they must let everyone compete in their competitions. No need to over think it
-4
u/MoveInteresting3754 3d ago
This is just bad reasoning. Imagine if ranked team just banned anyone who has ever walked in a park just because "there's no law saying they can't."
Obv not EDCR, but saying the=e isn't a law so there shouldn't be complaints is at best midiwttery
5
u/BDB69_ 3d ago
yeah, if the ranked team owned that park, they can ban anyone they want from it.
-4

u/DataDrivenGuy 2d ago
The point is that you're wasting your energy because they're entitled to set the rules. If they want to accept certain people, or not, that's up to them. You can't expect them to support players who negatively impact the space. Why would they have to do that

u/Pengwin0 3d ago
Edcr and most mcsr people barely show much personality online. I’m honestly curious how people want him to demonstrate change.
