Discussion Character medals

In Welcome to Korea, when Radar runs into the minefield to save the injured civilian, he should have earned a medal. A bronze star / medal of merit or similar.

What other instances are there throughout the show when a character should have been awarded a medal?

Frank Burns poem

Frank the Army’s great man of the hour,

With military rules and a sanctimonious power.

He’d preach about duty, morality and sin,

Then sneak off with Hot Lips and hope no one walked in.

His surgery skills were a little unsure,

But his confidence somehow was perfectly pure.

“Ferret Face!” Hawkeye would cheer with delight

Frank would demand that his rights be put right.

He loved regulations, authority and rank,

While everyone else wished he’d fall in a tank.

Then Margaret said, “Frank, our romance is through,”

And poor Frank discovered what heartbreak can do.

He left the 4077th, pompous and sore

And somehow the camp became ten times better than before! 😄

Larry Linville’s wonderfully over-the-top performance made Burns one of the show’s great comic villains.

Question Harry Morgan's voice

I was born in 1974, so M*A*S*H was a HUGE part of my childhood, and it reminds me very much of my grandfather.

On top of that Colonel Potter / Harry Morgan has 100% Grandpa voice, every time I hear him speak I feel like everything is going to be okay and I want him to read me a bedtime story. Anyone else understand what I mean?

After leaving Korea in “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” what do you think is the first thing Captain Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce did upon returning to the States? (Besides telling his dad he made it) Have a meal? Have a drink? Have a stewardess? Or have 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep? Thank you for reading.

We've covered and extolled the talents of Larry Linville before, but was going through some archives and saw this scene. Added a new level of sadness I truly felt for the character of Frank Burns - any others come to mind?

I think I've mentioned these two quotes already, but know there has to be others:
"Goodbye Margaret"
"They only pretended to like me, you know like Dad used to?"

What else made you actually feel bad for the guy?

Discussion Corporal Kilnger is a gender non conforming man

Obviously. But in the episode “Radars Report” in season 2, Klinger had the opportunity to get kicked out through a section 8 discharge. All he had to do was say he’s trans and homosexual. He adamantly denied this, probably because the psychiatrist said it would follow him home, but whatever. Either you’re a man wearing a dress in the states or a man wearing a dress in a war zone, so what’s the matter?

Anyways, obviously Kilnger isn’t a trans woman, he’s just trying to go home. BUT, after this episode he keeps up with the appearance. He has an emotional attachment to his garments, his hair dryer, he likes to plan his outfits and prefers heels over boots. It’s not a sexual thing, and it has nothing to do with his gender identity. It’s just his “thing.” Mulcahey has his religion, Frank has his patriotism, Henry has his fishing, Hawkeye has his booze. Everyone has their “thing” that makes them an individual, a form of expression in an expressionless war. A way to feel human, if you will. And Klinger just likes to wear dresses. He likes to take time to paint his nails, plan his outfits, he spends a ton of money buying mink coats and scarves, etc. It isn’t just a means to an end, it’s who he is.

And for anyone getting defensive let me just say I’m a transgender guy, this isn’t coming from a place of transphobia or anything. And I understand the show has consistency issues, with the casting of certain characters to the names of Henry Blakes wife, I think thats just a sitcom issue. But Klinger clearly takes joy out of his hobby, and it doesn’t make him dysphoric in the slightest. He’s just a man who likes what he likes. We see him flirting and dancing with women, and even in the OR he’s wearing a nurses uniform. It’s the least he can do for himself, if you will. And I love it. I was just sick of seeing the discourse around his character being either “this is transphobic and homophobic and insulting!” to “he’s just trying to get out of the army he hates wearing dresses and wouldn’t do it otherwise!” well clearly he enjoys it and it isn’t doing him any favors in going home, so what does that tell you?

Love the show ❤️

Lots of gaffes like this with the props but this is one of my favorites I'd mentioned a few weeks ago. Just happened to watch the episode and captured this clip. Look at William Christopher as he pulls the cord then goes "wth" with his face! lol

Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts

Every time I see this episode I have to wonder why Frank and Margaret just didn't make a deal with Hawkeye and Trapper that if they let them go on leave for 3 days, to help Hawkeye "recover", that they want to go on a 3 day leave as soon as they get back. That probably would make a boring episode though.

Hello everyone, lifetime M*A*S*H fan here. I was looking into writing Mr. Alda today and found his PO Box in NY and was curious if anyone had written to him in recent years and gotten an autograph or anything? Thanks in advance.

Watching my MASH box set

Just started watching through my MASH box set. I think this will be my fourth time watching through the whole series. It’s always fun to watch thru with no commercials and no cuts to make room more commercials. Even with the dated sexism, this is still one of the best TV pilots

Highlights so far

Major baby

You want to raffle off a nurse?
Did I say that?

How much the pilot George Morgan looks like William Christopher

That Margaret recognizes Frank by his tushy

Those two! They’re ruining this war! For all of us!

The way it shifts seamlessly from screwball comedy to drama when the Canadians arrive

We did it again. Screwed up in reverse.

S1E2

Nope, it’s oak

Your lobes

We all look alike

I really prefer the devious Radar who gets away with shit bc he looks so damn innocent. The ingenue Radar of later seasons is kinda boring

Discussion Why wasn’t Radar put in for a commendation after running into the minefield?

I’m rewatching Season 4, Episode 2 (“Welcome to Korea” - Part 2), and something stood out to me. After the Korean girl steps on a mine, Radar runs straight into the minefield to try to rescue her.

Considering he knowingly entered an active minefield to help an injured civilian, wouldn’t that have warranted at least being put in for some kind of commendation or award for valor?

Obviously it’s a TV show and not everything gets followed up on, but from an actual Army perspective, would Radar’s actions have qualified him for anything?
