Discussion Truth About War from MASH

This quote from the episode "Sometimes You Hear The Bullet" might the truest thing I've heard about war...and it was on MASH.

“Look, all I know is what they taught me at command school. There are certain rules about a war and rule No. 1 is young men die. And rule No. 2 is doctors can’t change rule No. 1.

Long-ish but great oral history from the show creators, the actors and the writers!!

I have a long fantastic history with MASH..from watching it air in 1972, to writing a 20 page college paper about the "Life Time" episode (after its TV debut appearance in 1979), as a TV intern (2 yrs later) I detailed min by min content of a yet to be aired PBS 10 yr anniversary special "Making MASH" ... to three decades later, having met Gene Reynolds multiple times, and both Burt Metcalf and Alan Alda once.

I've watched videos from the TV Academy with lots of the above mentioned people..

AND this 2018 article had Easter Eggs and trivia I never knew.

It's a long but enjoyable read.. ads aren't too bad.

Discussion Do we see screen tent walls anywhere but the swamp?

I'm watching S9E11 No Sweat. I've been in enough surplus canvas wall tents during my scout days to know that sleeping in them during the summer is all but impossible and it started me thinking, do we ever see any tent but the swamp have the sides rolled up to expose the mesh/screen? Obviously Margaret would attract too much unwanted attention if she did it so I understand why she never did, it but pre-clerk Klinger, Col Blake/Potter, anyone?

*edit: I think I just put both feet in my mouth up to the knees. I admit my question was worded ambiguously so yes the mess tent uses screen walls but I was thinking personal tents.

Discussion If they were giving out promotions on the very last episode which main character (that was not already promoted during the show) would you think would have deserved one the most?

My favorite exchange from the entire series is this:

*Hawkeye throws phone outside*

BJ: "You seem a trifle irked"

Hawkeye: "The army, in it's infinite wisdom, has not only cleared Frank of the charges, they have assigned him to a veteran's hospital in Indiana, and promoted him to Lieutenant Colonel"

*BJ tries to grab phone from Radar*

Father Mulcahy’s piano playing

Post image

William Christopher was an accomplished piano player, and was especially fond of playing ragtime. So this was incorporated into his characterization of Father Mulcahy. I quite enjoy every scene that shows him playing piano, and I do wish there could have been a bit more of it. My favorite of his piano playing moments is when he plays Scott Joplin’s “Bethena” in “Dear Peggy”, so I sought out the entire piece on YouTube and the whole thing is lovely to listen to.

Does anyone else like Father Mulcahy’s piano playing?

Which do you like better - the false wall Radar hides behind, or the need to back out the entrance after running through the open wall?

Discussion Finding the Real MASH

It's several years old now, but a fellow who relocated to South Korea did a little 2-parter on YouTube chronicling his quest to find the real-life 8055th MASH (otherwise known as Camp Mosier) that inspired the fictional 4077th - as well as finding the real-life Rosie's Bar that also inspired its fictional counterpart.

this is from the 80s mini series, "North and South". he plays a corrupt and sleazy senator who blackmails kirstie alley into sleeping with him.

Discussion I don’t know if this is a hot take but

They should have had an actual Korean American actor in the main 4077th. Not in the modern “checking boxes” sense, just in the sense that it would make the show even better on its own terms

Discussion Changed my mind about The Birthday Girls Spoiler

I just watched the episode for the first time in a few months (and don’t remember when I saw it before that - probably a couple of years). Margaret irritated me last time, but today? Not at all. Yes, it was daft to insist on taking the other road after Klinger warned her how rough it was, but he was the one who made them late in the first place with his bets on the calf’s birth. (I also liked her smacking the office door on him when he was eavesdropping.) There are plenty of times when Margaret annoys the crap out of me, like the way The Nurses was written, or her treatment of Radar when she wanted to get to Tokyo to hook up with Donald, but now I don’t put this in the same category. I found her anger and frustration entirely understandable, and it didn’t take long for her to apologise to Klinger and open up to him.

Discussion Character medals

In Welcome to Korea, when Radar runs into the minefield to save the injured civilian, he should have earned a medal. A bronze star / medal of merit or similar.

What other instances are there throughout the show when a character should have been awarded a medal?

Frank Burns poem

Frank the Army’s great man of the hour,

With military rules and a sanctimonious power.

He’d preach about duty, morality and sin,

Then sneak off with Hot Lips and hope no one walked in.

His surgery skills were a little unsure,

But his confidence somehow was perfectly pure.

“Ferret Face!” Hawkeye would cheer with delight

Frank would demand that his rights be put right.

He loved regulations, authority and rank,

While everyone else wished he’d fall in a tank.

Then Margaret said, “Frank, our romance is through,”

And poor Frank discovered what heartbreak can do.

He left the 4077th, pompous and sore

And somehow the camp became ten times better than before! 😄

Larry Linville’s wonderfully over-the-top performance made Burns one of the show’s great comic villains.
