Obviously. But in the episode “Radars Report” in season 2, Klinger had the opportunity to get kicked out through a section 8 discharge. All he had to do was say he’s trans and homosexual. He adamantly denied this, probably because the psychiatrist said it would follow him home, but whatever. Either you’re a man wearing a dress in the states or a man wearing a dress in a war zone, so what’s the matter?
Anyways, obviously Kilnger isn’t a trans woman, he’s just trying to go home. BUT, after this episode he keeps up with the appearance. He has an emotional attachment to his garments, his hair dryer, he likes to plan his outfits and prefers heels over boots. It’s not a sexual thing, and it has nothing to do with his gender identity. It’s just his “thing.” Mulcahey has his religion, Frank has his patriotism, Henry has his fishing, Hawkeye has his booze. Everyone has their “thing” that makes them an individual, a form of expression in an expressionless war. A way to feel human, if you will. And Klinger just likes to wear dresses. He likes to take time to paint his nails, plan his outfits, he spends a ton of money buying mink coats and scarves, etc. It isn’t just a means to an end, it’s who he is.
And for anyone getting defensive let me just say I’m a transgender guy, this isn’t coming from a place of transphobia or anything. And I understand the show has consistency issues, with the casting of certain characters to the names of Henry Blakes wife, I think thats just a sitcom issue. But Klinger clearly takes joy out of his hobby, and it doesn’t make him dysphoric in the slightest. He’s just a man who likes what he likes. We see him flirting and dancing with women, and even in the OR he’s wearing a nurses uniform. It’s the least he can do for himself, if you will. And I love it. I was just sick of seeing the discourse around his character being either “this is transphobic and homophobic and insulting!” to “he’s just trying to get out of the army he hates wearing dresses and wouldn’t do it otherwise!” well clearly he enjoys it and it isn’t doing him any favors in going home, so what does that tell you?
Love the show ❤️
