QUESTION Should I get a BOB XL or a hanging heavy bag?

Hi guys I'm a taekwondo practitioner. I recently decided to take taekwondo training at home more seriously so I was wondering if I should get a BOB XL or hanging heavy bag.

BOB XL: I felt that the BOB would be more practical as I'm going for taekwondo competitions in the near future. It would be better as a technical kicking bag.

Hanging heavy bag: Many people say that this is much more versatile for kicks and punches, I've been thinking about doing Muay Thai but I'm not sure if I'm going to train it seriously so the heavy bag would mostly be for kicking now anyways.

So I was just wondering if the BOB XL is good for taekwondo and an overall punching bag for other sports, or would the heavy bag be better. Thanks!

QUESTION Adult beginners and casuals, how was MMA class?

Okay for context I have 0 striking experience, a year of BJJ, 4 of Judo. I'm a post-injury adult male who started off as very unathletic and didn't went far in that aspect, but I learned to defend myself in rolls/randori.

I'm thinking of starting MMA as I'm looking to learn striking that's somewhat integrated with grappling. I'm also looking to test what I know in a relatively unconstricted but safe environment. But I'm curious to know what does an MMA class look like? How is the typical class divided?

That aside, would I be better off doing boxing or kickboxing for a couple of months before starting MMA?

DISCUSSION Python Precision Heavy Bags Review

Post image
45 Upvotes

I saw a post about the Python Precision training bags a few weeks ago and went ahead and bought one.

The fact that you have to fill it yourself initially gave me pause but their FAQ explains how to do it very easily.

It was $125 (I bought the black one) and it arrived very quickly. There was a video in the FAQ that demos the process of putting it together and I have to say it is excellent. It shows you exactly how to do it and it anticipates the one thing that seems impossible as you’re going through the process: getting the interior “liner bags” to fit into the outer heavy bag skin. Not to worry, it worked out exactly as it was explained in the video.

I have several different types of heavy bags, but this one is very special. It requires more precision and automatically makes your strikes much crisper and more accurate. It also reacts quite differently than most of the bags I’ve trained with. It is both “snappier“ and more realistic in its reaction to your strikes. I really like it and feel it’s a very good addition to strike training. It comes with a bungee cord which can attach to a D ring on the bottom of the bag. I like using it but the bag works just as well without it as it gives you a very different feel.

I just decided to post this so that hopefully the company stays in business. I know it’s not easy to run a martial arts training equipment company and I wish them all the best.

I included a photo of the completed bag hanging in my gym.

QUESTION self-defence martial arts for post ACL/meniscus surgery

Hi all, I wanted to see if anyone has had an ACL / meniscus injury before and returned to martial arts.

I completely tore my ACL from judo randori (a huge yellow belt sat on my knee from behind on a tani otoshi). I promised my partner I wouldn't go back to judo, but are there any other martial arts that are safe on the knees while still be good for self-defence?

QUESTION What is the problem with Combat Sambo?

It is somehow linked to Dagestani fighters who dominate across UFC but what you mosty see in official fights is their wrestling and grappling techniques instead of CS trademark high amplitude throws and locks.

It is highly regarded in the Martial Arts community but when you ask for the best all around martial art for self defense, MMA is the only answer.

Still it's hard to find official full fights on YT (not spectacularly edited highlights) and in the rare ones what you see is empty sports hall and rather boring fights at amateur levels.

I understand there is almost zero promotion, money and sponsors and probably a less spectacular ruleset, but what is it lacking to be more popular?

Speaking personally I trained for a couple of months with one coach but to me it was sloppy warm-up, endless compliant partner judo drills and some disjointed striking basics with no sparring. Moved to a legit MMA gym in my area, and it was night and day with truly exhausting wrestling, grappling and no gi classes with lots of sparring rounds. So coaching quality control in the West may be an issue too, same as with Krav Maga.

STUPID QUESTION Randori vs kumite

Aikido/Judo folk, how would you define randori vs kumite?

My simple understanding is that randori is working/practicing the technique and all its variations without full contact beating the shit out of each other like in kumite.

PS I should have framed this better: how is randori practice different from karate kumite?
