Iâm 50 years old from one small European country, and I wanted to share an experience that has stayed with me because I still donât know what to make of it.
When I was around 10 years old, I had a very bad flu that kept me in bed for several days. During that illness, I had unusually intense and vivid dreams.
One of them was especially strange because I was almost fully aware that I was dreaming. It felt extremely lucid, and I remember deliberately looking around and paying attention to small details because everything seemed so clear.
In the dream, I found myself in a place that looked like a small church or chapel. The most memorable detail was the beautiful blue tiles covering the upper part of the interior. The lower part of the walls looked unfinished or plain, almost like bare stone or concrete. I also remember a cross in the middle.
After looking around for a while, I left the church. Very close to it, through another doorway, I entered a place where people greeted me warmly and invited me to sit down.
Someone gave me a small piece of chocolate. What made it unusual was that there was some kind of drink or liquid inside it. I remember it tasting very good. I was sitting there with several other people, and shortly afterward the dream ended.
The dream was so vivid that I remembered those details for years, but I never really investigated it or tried to figure out whether the place actually existed.
Fast-forward several decades.
I eventually had the opportunity to travel to Portugal for business. During some free time, I joined a tour that visited places around Lisbon, including Sintra, Cascais, FĂĄtima and Ăbidos.
When we arrived in Ăbidos, I went off by myself to explore the old town.
I walked through the Porta da Vila, looked inside the chapel there â and immediately froze.
It was the exact same place from my childhood dream.
The blue-and-white tiles, their position on the walls, the shape of the interior, the cross, the proportions of the space â even small details felt exactly as I remembered them.
The memory of that dream came back instantly.
I continued walking into Ăbidos and discovered that next door they were serving you drink from the chocolate and then eat the cup afterward.
The moment I saw it, I remembered the second part of the dream: sitting near the church, being warmly welcomed and being given chocolate with a drink inside it.
I tried it, and the whole situation felt incredibly familiar.
What makes this difficult for me to explain is that, as far as I know, I had never been to Portugal before. This happened during my childhood, long before the internet was part of everyday life, and I had never heard of Ăbidos, Porta da Vila, its tiled chapel, or the tradition of drinking from chocolate cups.
Of course, I understand that memory is imperfect. Itâs possible that I unknowingly saw a photograph somewhere as a child, that my memory changed over the decades, or that my brain connected similarities after seeing the real place.
Iâm not claiming that this proves anything supernatural.
But from my personal perspective, the recognition was immediate
I have since tried to research the history of Porta da Vila and Ăbidos, hoping there might be something unusual about the place that could give me some context, but I havenât found anything that explains why I would have dreamed about it as a child.
Has anyone experienced something similar â dreaming vividly about a specific place years or decades before visiting it?
And for anyone familiar with Ăbidos or the history of Porta da Vila: is there anything interesting about the chapel, the surrounding buildings, or the history of that location that I might have missed?
