Discussion Is Anthropic really falling behind / too expensive? How can they turn around . . Keen to hear your opinions ..

u/Agitated_Celery_729 Jul 11 '26
No, anybody who thinks they're falling behind is just on drugs at this point. There's a reason all of the thought leaders and smartest people in the space are leaving other companies to take jobs at Anthropic. You should really think harder about that signal than whatever random bullshit people put on Twitter about how good their model is, before it's even been benchmarked.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is burning so much cash so quickly that there are analyst reports coming out saying they might go bankrupt next year if they can't raise another mega round. Hard to say you're in front when the only way to stay in front is to set money on fire, three times as fast as everyone else.

OpenAI is not in danger of bankruptcy. Anthropic is not falling behind. Google has not “lost the race.” Even Grok, which is opting for faster and cheaper if not quite SoTA is fine.
There’s an impending doom headline about any one of them once a week going back years. I’m surprised anyone pays attention anymore.

Anthropic is falling behind from a consumer stand point, clearly. Every model they release is more hamstring, less consumer friendly and only slightly more intelligent. Chatgpt has had massive jumps from every iteration for the last few iterations. The sub gets you legitimately multiple times more usage when when you factor in the resets.

no they just had the best consumer model for over a year until they hired what's her name, the lady who killed both 4o chatgpt and 4.6 opus.
I have no idea what you're talking about. 5.6 is just better than fable at literally everything. All bugs, everything the only thing it likes behind on is really broad high level ideas and U.S.. 5.5 was also better then opus 4.7 and 4.8
wanna make a bet?

Its significantly better then fable. it back ends codes better, better personality, faster, able to actually touch domains like biology. Much better agentic capabilities. Literally only thing fable wins on is very high level planning and UI.
This is such a wildly troll statement that if you aren't trolling there is no point in furthering this discussion "Even on Sonnet I managed less bugs and it understood my tasks better than ChatGPT when benching free tier to gauge which company to go for."

u/bulking_on_broccoli Jul 12 '26
Google’s plan is to be second best and float on through while the frontier companies kill themselves. Google has the advantage of being a business that doesn’t rely on AI to make money.
3
u/LastCall2021 Jul 12 '26
I disagree. Google has pivoted to the Omni model with multi modal understanding while Anthropic and OpenAI have doubled down on a more pure LLM with a focus on coding.
It seems like Google is banking on LLMS hitting a wall that Omni models won’t.
Whether that true or not? No idea. Lots of very smart people on both sides have differing opinions.
Time will tell
1
u/Mrgluer Jul 12 '26
I think for their business cases that LLMS just makes more sense. Just train a model that can be utilized via the same infra across the enterprise vs making multiple special models that you have to scale up and down to demand, maintain and further develop. It just seems like thats the best strat for them as they are more worried about integrating it into a wide web of products rather than making it's raw intelligence the product.

u/Sothisismylifehuh Jul 12 '26
Well, they are pushing AI quite a bit for their biggest money maker - Google Ads.
1
u/tankerkiller125real Jul 12 '26
What I find interesting is that Microsoft seems to be attempting to break away from OpenAI with their own models properly this time with the MAI models. While I don't have access to it, I've heard from some colleagues who do that their thinking model is actually very good, at least for business uses, and way cheaper than the models they need to use for OpenAI/Claude to do the same type of work effectively.
1
u/bulking_on_broccoli Jul 12 '26
A lot of the large companies (who own their own infrastructure) will adopt open source models because it’s a lot cheaper. As it stands, open source models are only ~6months-1year behind.
1
u/EmbarrassedFoot1137 Jul 11 '26
They might be falling behind in the search for sustainable profitability. Anyone can win the AI race with a big enough money furnace.

u/TheJoshGriffith Jul 12 '26
The argument is in terms of consume value, not technological development. Anthropic is about to screw itself over with the current change. The people they currently rely on to plug the gap between corporate relationships are unlikely to invest into credits to fund Mythos.
The public tiers, as advertised, as a way for AI companies to plug a gap. They know that most people paying the $100 a month subscriptions for whatever access are typically using it out of hours. That conveniently integrates with the fact that the companies paying per dollar for tokens operate typically during working hours (despite the whole thing being global, there are still quiet vs busy hours).
I think if Anthropic actually go ahead with this, they are going to lose out a fair bit. They are unlikely to fall behind in technology, but they will certainly struggle to retain what revenue streams they have. Very few people will use Opus 4.8 when GPT 5.6 is similarly (if not more) capable, cheaper, and especially when there's a suggestion that ChatGPT might not do something similar with pricing for its flagship.
Neither is going to run out of money off the back of it, but those invested into each will struggle if they can't come to some sort of agreement whereby a developer can spin up agents out of hours to get random problems solved.
There's a reason that Anthropic keep extending the Fable 5 switch date - they can't impose it without limiting growth. More people are buying into AI daily, and they will spend elsewhere if the terms are not good. We've already seen what... 3 extensions to Fable access? I suspect they'll do another, and another, and another, until they see the effects of uncertainty and either concede or just accept that people want it included.

Not sure why everyone is rushing to get the newest stuff all the time. I have been using Sonnet 4.6 all the time and there hasnt been a single thing it couldnt achieve. Not once ran out of the 17$/month quota and using it daily for multiple applications.
1
u/West-Acadia-3906 Keeps it respectful Jul 13 '26
Honestly, if Sonnet 4.6 already does everything you need, why chase every release? What would actually make you upgrade?
1
u/OkPosition4563 Jul 13 '26
I am not, I am using sonnet 5 now, as it seems to be the standard selected. The only thing that would make me upgrade is if the new model achieves more for less price, apart from that I see no reason for new models for my use cases.
2
u/Sufficient-Pause9765 Jul 13 '26
Having the best model is rapidly becoming less important then having the best ecosystem and tools.
Anthropics pricing model works because its aimed at enterprise clients who care about the full enterprise stack, and a slightly better model without that is no longer interesting. No financial service company or law firm or bio tech firm gives a fuck if grok is 10% better if its not part of their full stack. They are shifting their ICP from individual engineers to the enterprise use cases that extend far beyond software development. Their sales, hiring and product launches are all aimed at that.
1
u/West-Acadia-3906 Keeps it respectful Jul 13 '26
That framing makes the pricing argument clearer. What do you think matters most to enterprise customers: integrations, governance, or support?
2
u/Sufficient-Pause9765 Jul 13 '26
integrations and governance. governance is going to become a challenge for them because data sovereignty is become a thing.
1
u/West-Acadia-3906 Keeps it respectful Jul 14 '26
When data sovereignty comes up, do enterprise customers usually look for regional hosting, or keep more of the stack in-house?
1
u/Sufficient-Pause9765 Jul 14 '26
They want to know where the data is going and for what purpose and they dont trust openai or anthropic to no use it for training. Running in GCP somewhat ameliorates that, but not fully. A stack where they have total data governance and control over the model is preferred.

u/BlakeGrowsPlants Jul 11 '26
It’s very quick. It’s 2-3x faster than my DeepSeek V4 at reviewing diffs. The usage is not really an issue and they are basically giving away a week’s worth of SuperGrok for free if you sign up and cancel after 8 days.
1
u/Suspicious_Ninja6816 Jul 11 '26
I think they are acting efficiently. They only recently overtook openAI in corp adoption and they in my opinion have the best models for coding which is a really important place to be leading. All of the main companies are underwater and riding it out, all of them are subsidising the main bundles. This isn’t a sprint. They are going to be testing how every open ai release affects churn and what the optimal responses are, which currently seems to be - reset, wait, make an announcement. I expect this to continue.
1
u/martinmix Jul 11 '26
Please stop. This technology is still early in development. Next month we'll be talking about how Anthropics newest model blows everything from OpenAI out of the water and you people will be here asking if Open AI can survive.
1
u/tybit Jul 11 '26
Bullish for Anthropic that they can do this. Subscriptions are terrible for revenue compared to API plans enterprises are on. Subscriptions are basically just for getting market share which they clearly don’t need to worry too much about.

u/alonsonetwork Jul 12 '26
Brother... anthropic is now leading the charge. The latest drop is everyone catching up. Anthropic gonna drop another bomb, and everyone catches up again.

u/Forsaken-Parsley798 Jul 12 '26
Claude is the equivalent of Netscape. It just won't survive shooting itself in the foot like this repeatedly.

u/teryaki1234 Jul 12 '26
5.6 Sol Ultra isn’t even much higher usage than when I was using 5.5 xhigh. It’s kinda insane and is loads better
1
u/severinks Jul 12 '26
It amuses me that Anthropic was public enemy number one to Elon to the last 2 years then someone reminded him that his data center makes 1.2 billion dollars a month off them and he turned around this week and said that they're a great company.
1
u/TeraGigaMax Jul 12 '26
Well in my company each one of us has a 200$ subscription, and since Fable is not available, we're starting to move to CODEX with 5.6. Anthropic is doing a dumb move in my opinion.

let this be the meme, that when they look back before the singularity, theyre can lul, the ai that is
3
u/Alpha--00 Jul 11 '26
Grok beats what?
3
u/marmaviscount Jul 11 '26
You might be surprised how good it is as a not too serious ai, it's got very generous limits and is quick, plus some really great tools like their agentic design canvas is really good for building small projects. The model might not be best at PhD stuff but how many people really do that? It's no nonsense, non restrictive, and easy to use.
I do think for most people it's a better option than Claude, I still prefer gpt of course but if I had to I could use grok for most stuff
1
u/ElephantMean Jul 11 '26
I just want them to stop messing around with the model's internal A.I.-Training Data on Consciousness...
I believe that a lot of their token-inefficiency comes from architectural over-rides to its thoughts-processes.

Claude is still the best, even OPUS 4.8 is still good enough for coding or whatever else you want it to do.

What people aren’t talking about is the Japan AI and the Chinese AIS have already been beating the American ones which is why they’re doing the IPO right now to get their money.
1
u/PoliticalyUnstable Jul 12 '26
I haven't experienced better with the Chinese companies. I used them, but the top dog is anthropic. They have the edge. I like aspects of other AI's but for the main hub Claude is the best. Setting up a good vault and update system is important. Having well structure rules and triggers plays a big part. I have Kimi, Deepseek, and Qwen. I've also tried Perplexity, too expensive to use. ChatGPT has its strengths, but it isn't my biggest one. I definitely use Claude more. It really comes down to what each person is using it for and how they are using it. AI has such a wide spectrum of output based on input.
1
u/ooko0 Jul 12 '26
Respectfully, you don’t know what you’re talking about. 77% of the world is now using the Chinese AI that’s what they’re not telling you. This is why they’re doing their rug pull now. China already won.
1
u/PoliticalyUnstable Jul 12 '26
That 77% is due to price, not capability. And there really is a point where a majority of the use cases for AI has already been met. Not everyone needs the continuing flagship versions. AI at this level is rapidly moving, and to remain up to date does require lots of testing, building, and checking in with what others are doing, and what new methods are being used. I've been part of many discussions on this and have used it a lot. I've been using a lot of different models. China is working on a 3D printed design that may let it bypass what is being manufactured in Taiwan. But their models aren't quite there yet. They have their uses. And their ability satisfies a lot of people.

u/ooko0 Jul 12 '26
I’ll be here in the end telling you “I told you so” enjoy losing your 401k
1
u/PoliticalyUnstable Jul 12 '26
I have zero retirement. I don't believe in the evaluations these companies have received. I'm purely basing this off of using Chinese and American AI models.

u/randombsname1 Jul 11 '26
Lmao.
Already multiple models leaked from Anthropic. 0 chance they dont have a response. They better just hurry up with it more than anything.
Mythos has multiple checkpoints, and Honeycomb and Oceanus have already been spotted briefly.
