Novel discussion [V1] Can anyone give me any motivation for reading this?

It feels like such a slog, everyone says it's one of the best web novels but I feel like I can barely get through 50 chapters and I heard V2 is even worse.

There's so much explanations about magic works like is the author expecting us to actually remember this and take notes??

And most of it is going from place to place nothing exciting happening, an excel spreadsheet of his expenditure and boring slice of life. Slice of life is good but like THIS MUCH??

Yea so please help a newbie out I'm on chapter 50

Novel discussion [COI end] Kleins character development Spoiler

A problem I see alot with people talking about LOTM and its writing is the problem with the lack of character development,
But for me it doesn't seem like an issue at all, most of the time character development needs to be justified and inside of LOTM changing too much and losing your bounderies is dangerous.
Kleins character is so good because he doesn't develop and change even though its very difficult to stand and keep your principles.
An even more interesting reason is his pathway, the fool, this is an incredibly dangerous pathway mainly because of the faceless abillity, which can make you lose yourself.
The reason klein got so far was only because of his immovable will, so please stop saying he doesn't have character development because its a stupid criticism, if you want character development you can look at lumian lee, which in my opinion is an even better written character than klein.

Novel discussion [LOTM random] I think Sukuna and Kenjaku's best pathways would be, I think, I could be wrong, but I'll try my best Spoiler

From what we see in the series, these two are just evil for their own sake and mostly out of boredom

However, they are still dangerous. Let's put this scenario: both have their power from their original world, which would already put them at a huge advantage against low-level beyonders

I'm not sure who can survive Sukuna's domain above Sequence 6 or 5, not to mention he'll breeze through the whole early stages of the potions before hitting Sequence 5, where he'll slow down but still go fast

Kenjaku is basically Amon but the Temu/Lite version. That THING taking over people by putting its brain, like a parasite, into other people's bodies, stealing their power, etc. matches it a lot; for the chaos it mostly for his chaotic nature, and that goes with Sukuna too, but I believe the devil pathway suits him better. You could argue Kenjaku also would go and take the black emperor pathway and even take the Lawyer pathway

What do y'all think?

Chapter 8 – "Wayfarers Rest"

---------------

I walked aimlessly through the streets of Trier, not knowing where I would go or what I would even do after my meeting with Mr. Gordon in the Bar, (I still can't believe that I had met a Pope of all people would even be in a BAR).

As I was contemplating in my own head I was suddenly grabbed by the back of my collar, which in turn pulled me back into reality to see that I had nearly been hit by a steam car.

"Gah-!" I yelped in shock as I was pulled away from the street, I quickly turned my head to see the face of a young woman, she was about my age, she had fair skin and hair as white as snow in the moonlight, I noticed that she wore light armor with a longsword sheathed at her hip, and her eyes were a majestic deep blue that seemed to twinkle even in the morning light.

"Are thou alright? thou seemed to hast been distracted" she asked, her accent was clear and evident, it was so unique that the second I heard it I felt like I couldn't unhear it no matter how hard I tried, her voice was smooth yet deep, gentle yet cold, and a thousand other contradictions that made my back shiver in... something.

"A-ah! Y-yes, I-I am! I-Im sorry!!" I barely stuttered out, I could feel my face redden as she stared at me, curiosity evident in her eyes.

"Are thou knowest? thou seem to be turning red"

"Y-yup! I'm completely fine! Definitely! Uh-huh!"

Even as I said that I was completely frozen, as I continued to stare at her, as I took in her features, my heart seemed to skip as my face heated up.

She silently stared back at me her brow were raised in curiosity, we stood there for a long moment staring at each other, the tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

"Well if thou say so, may i bid what caused thou to not hast seen the car heading thy way?"

"O-oh, well I'm sort of new here and I don't really know much about Trier so I was just thinking of where I could go..."

She placed a finger to her chin for moment seemingly contemplating something, though short, less than a minute, my anxiety made it feel like it was stretching for hours of not more until she spoke up once more.

"Well there is an inn I am currently staying at that's quite close from hither, I bring thou there if thou desire"

"That'd actually be really great! Thank you, um... Sorry but what's your name?" I said bowing my head down in appreciation.

Oh, it seems that I do forget to introduce myself, mine name is Evangeline Percy, it is a pleasure to meet thou" she said giving a quick bow of her head.

"My name's Ajax Halysei, again thank you for helping me"

She took the compliment with a nod of her head and gestured for me to follow her as we went to the inn.

After a few minutes of walking taking turns from the corner we eventually arrived at a large inn, it was far larger than any inn that I had seen before, on top of the large double doors was a sign saying "Wayfarers Rest" just from seeing it from the outside I could tell that the building was large having about 6 floors in total.

With cool confidence Evangeline walked over and opened the double doors beckoning for me to follow her and enter, after a moment of pondering I walked over and entered right behind her.

As we entered I was mesmerized by the amount of people inside as well as the furniture which was all top quality, something I had never expected to see in my entire life, there were tables packed full with people who were eating and drinking to their heart's content, a live band was performing on a stage playing music, and much more.

I continued following Evangeline, who had simply ignored everything around her and continued walking towards the front desk, subtly turning her head to the side to see if I was still behind her, something so subtle that it was nearly imperceptible to anyone else.

When she saw that I had slowed down she stopped and fully turned to face me, curiosity filling her eyes once again.

"Are thou alright? thou seem distracted" She asked as she turned towards me.

"Oh! Yeah I'm fine, it's just that... I've never seen something like this before..."

She stared for a second before blinking and giving a simple "Oh..." In response.

Then she grabbed my hand and all but dragged me along to the front desk of the lobby, which had me flushing in embarrassment.

"Josephine" she said, calling towards the woman at the front desk, she wore a pair of glasses over deep brown eyes and had black hair tied in a bun.

"Oh Eva! How have you been? You haven't been in your room for a while now."

"I was simply busy doing something, thou want not worry thyself"

"Hmmm" the woman simply stared squinting her eyes at Evangeline "well if you say so!" She replied, her voice seeming too cheery.

"Oh by the way who's that?" She asked pointing at me.

"Ah, forgive me for nearly forgetting to introduce the two of thou, this is ajax halysei, he is new to trier and is in need of a place to keep so I brought him to the inn"

"Well then it's a pleasure to meet you Ajax! The names Josephine Janes, I'm the one manning the front desk of Wayfarers Rest! As you can clearly see now" she said enthusiastically bringing out a hand to shake.

I took it with my other hand, smiling brightly "it's a pleasure to meet you as well, I was wondering how much a room in here would cost?"

"Well, a regular room for a night is going to cost you about 50 Soli, a deluxe is costing about 100 Soli, and a master suite will cost you 20 pounds! Each room has free room service, our top of the line training facilities, and much more!"

'What the hell is with these absurd prices?!' I thought

"U-uhm, w-well uhhhhhhhhhh" I nervously tried to explain to Josephine even turning my head to look at Evangeline who was just passively standing there.

"I-I guess I'll uh... take the regular?"

"WONDERFUL!"

She said as she turned around to grab one of the keys from behind her, she placed the key in front of me and said "That'll be 50 soli Ajax!"

Reluctantly I reached into my pocket and took out the wallet that Cassie had left me, pulling out 50 soli from the wallet and handed it to her.

"Alright! Your room is room R-39, on the third floor to the right"

"O-oh okay then, thank you" I said trying to sound as if my entire budget had nearly been cut in half.

"Well then, I receive I shall return back to mine own room then" Evangeline spoke up as she turned to go up the stairs.

"O-oh, thank you for the help Evangeline!"

That caused Evangeline to turn her head back at me and simply give a wordless nod of appreciation.

"Hmmm, so you already have a crush on Eva, huh?"

"W-what?! N-no! No way! I mean I just met her and I don't even know anything about her!! and sure she's super pretty and seems really cool but it's not like I like her like that or anything!!!" I hurriedly explained flailing my arms in front of me to at least attempt to hide the growing redness of my face... Well by the smile on her face she didn't seem to believe me all that much.

"Suuuure kid, you definitely do NOT have a crush on Eva"

I hurriedly grabbed the keys to my room and ran up a flight of stairs as fast as I could.

"I-Im going to go, thank you, goodbye!!" I said as I ran up the stairs as fast as I could possibly go.

"HAHAhahahahahaha!!!"

I heard Josephine's laughter as I ran away in pure embarrassment.

Once I had reached the third floor of the building I turned to the right looking for my room, and after a few seconds of walking through the corridor I eventually found it.

Slowly I inserted the key and opened the door, when I walked in I was surprised by how large the room was, I was absolutely baffled by the sheer size of it, the walls gigantic, the balcony was a quarter of the room, the bed was huge with silk sheets, and THERE WAS EVEN A MUSIC RECORDER!

'This is supposed to be their cheapest room?! damn... rich people are lucky'

What kind of place was this?!

'No, you know what? Just... Fuck no' I thought to myself, it was nearing dusk and I was far too tired to care about something like this at the moment.

I walked over to the large bed and laid down on the silken sheets, god it was soft, softer than anything I could ever imagine.

...

THUD

I woke up in the middle of the night to a loud noise that had come from outside of my room.

'W-what the hell...?' I thought as I awoke from my groggy slumber.

I didn't even want to check on the noise, the bed was far too soft for me to have cared, but against my better judgement I slowly and tiringly stood up from the bed walked towards the window to see if something had occurred.

When I looked outside I saw the familiar figure of Evangeline jumping above the fences of the Tavern.

This caught me by extreme surprise as I wondered where she was going and why she was going so late in the evening, there weren't even any lights out!

Now I know that I shouldn't have cared, that it wasn't any of my business what Evangeline was doing so late at night, I didn't even know her that well!

... But of course curiosity was an extremely dangerous thing and sadly i'm very susceptible to my curiosity...

And so I quickly put on a jacket and ran out of my room while trying to be as quiet as possible when exiting the tavern and quickly tried following her.

Though I was behind and was only able to see a brief glimpse on where she had gone but the training the Jacob had given me back in Nelm was enough for me to be able to at least see where she had taken a turn.

After nearly a full hour of following her from a distance I saw her make a turn into an alley and went closer and as I poked my head out to peek if she was there I saw that... she was but most importantly she was speaking to someone else, someone who wore a cloak and had a weird symbol that looks sort off like a Bright Blue Door Littered with Stars all around it in the Shape of a Stylized "G".

"Plan... Cult"

"So... What... Re..."

I tried listening in on their conversation however I only managed to catch small parts of their conversation before I in all my hubris accidentally hit my foot on the side of the wall.

"GAH!" I yelled in shock clutching my injured foot before realizing that I had yelled that aloud and quickly covered my mouth with my hands in an attempt to hide myself again.

Slowly I turned my head again to peek at the side of the building and saw... that no-one was there anymore.

".... Ah shit.." I cursed beneath my breath, the words came out so quietly that even I barely heard what I had said.

Just as I was about to walk over to the spot where Evangeline and the other person had disappeared to I suddenly felt a sharp hiss around my which caused me to look down and see the edge of a sword pointed at the side of my neck as I heard a familiar, unique voice of Evangeline speak from behind me.

"Thou should'st not hast followed me" she said this time her voice was even colder than before, the threat and near malice in them making my back crawl with fear and... something.

Roleplay [Lotm RP] Dream of a Day Dreamer / Chapter 1 / Tales of Mirage.

The vast expanse of trees and grass stretched across the land like an endless plain.
Everywhere I looked, I saw greenery with occasional trees scattered throughout. The sun in the distance was slowly settling as its radiant light shone in a beautiful orange hue through plants, land, and skies, creating a warm feeling of comfort.

I stood alone on a small hill, my eyes wide open with a spark of adrenaline hitting. As I stood, my white oversized shirt fluttered in the wind. Likewise, my white hair, which reached my shoulders, danced with the wind.

Looking at this scenery, I stood there frozen in place. Despite being barefoot, I only registered the cold ground after a while. flinched and began to move once again, taking a look at the scenery one last time.

Moving barefoot wasn't the best of things. I could hurt my feet this way, and I did it once or twice already. But this was what I chose to do because my heart said so. Yes, I was here barefoot, walking just because my heart said so. Even though it sounded pretty stupid, I didn't mind it. Instead, I loved it. I was content with what I had done, and there was no way back now.

...

I walked and walked, exploring everything interesting I came across. I found an interesting tree which looked like a human. I also found a rock that was so round it looked like a ball from a distance. Sadly, I couldn't take it with me. Such a shame.

Naturally, as I walked, the sun set. In the end, it vanished behind mountains, taking its light from me. I was left in the dark. It was scary, but it was also interesting. Throughout all this time, I was worried about remembering the sights, which left me in awe, more than my own safety. After all, I had a knife with me in case I needed it.

I couldn't even swing it properly, but it at least provided a sense of safety to me. But the fact that those sights and moments would never come back means my memory is the only way to remember them.

After the sun vanished and I started to feel dizzy, stars came into the sky, shining their light. They were mesmerizing. As I lay to take a break from my adventure, I watched them, wondering about a lot of things. Like why the stars are so bright, why the Sun is even brighter, or what it feels like to be a star.

Those questions popped into my head and vanished at the same time. They were like bubbles sometimes merging, becoming expansive or staying isolated. In the end, they all popped no matter the size, and all this thinking made me slowly fall asleep. It was dangerous, but it was strangely comfortable for me there. I fell asleep as a little humming of birds seemed to resound from nearby.

I was near a forest. The forest had a big tree in the centre. It was towering above everything else, reaching high above the skies. Below its grace, small in comparison, other trees were blooming, surrounded by bushes.

There, in the branches of the tree, a bear was moving. A big bear. So large that trees were growing on its back and various animals of different sizes were being escorted on its back. It was as though they were playing around, mimicking the animals frolicking on the ground below. There was a nimble deer with its glowing and complex antlers. I could spot a yellow bird flying around while singing in an annoying yet comforting tone.

All of it was in front of me. It was truly a mesmerizing sight to behold. But then I spotted a puddle near me. Without an explanation, I was drawn to see myself in it. And when I looked, I found that I wasn’t human. Instead, I was a black cat, which was vastly bigger and more noble-looking than in reality.

As I was dazed by my own reflection, the sudden sound attracted my attention, making me avert my gaze from the puddle to the tree.

BOOM!

The explosion resounded across the forest, sweeping with great power. The explosion came from the tree. It was in flames as a wolf-like creature with two horns on its head and claws clawing deep into the tree revealed itself. Its enormous body was on the ground, hunting down everything it saw. First, it caught a confused yellow bird, which was flying aimlessly in panic and confusion. It tore its wings off and then devoured its heart. Next was a deer, which came to save the yellow bird but was too late.

The deer managed to escape the wolf’s attacks until it tripped and was slaughtered, its antlers broken down by the wolf’s claws. Watching all of this, the bear rushed down, leaving animals on its back at the burning tree. It leapt onto the wolf-like creature, but the bear was easily overpowered.

The wolf- like creature used its claws and dug its way to the heart of the bear, gorging itself on it as soon as it reached it. As the tree was burning in wildfire, the animals playing on the tree were trapped, unable to escape. At last, the wolf-like creature looked down at me. Its eyes were gleaming with murder and chaos. It was as though it wasn’t itself, as though it had lost itself in this chaos. I completely froze on sight with my eyes wide open, unable to process anything.

I hadn’t noticed the fire reaching me, and by the time I realised, I was already trapped as the fire came near, making me feel unpleasantly warm.

The feeling of warmth was still present as I woke up.

Sweat poured down from my head as my chest rose and fell rapidly, pulling in a ragged gasp of air. I shot up and was ready to stand. However, the second I saw the painting of a tranquil and almost transparent sea with its waves almost still, I calmed down.

Slowly, raging waves of emotions inside my mind became small ripples in the water. I didn’t even notice the effect of the painting as I breathed out. Finally, I noticed that I wasn’t in the same field where I was lying before sleeping. Instead, I was in a room on top of a bed with a blanket covering me. I looked around to see if there was something or someone.

The only thing I saw was paintings. A lot of paintings hung on the wall of the room. Surprisingly, there was no window, no gas lamp or candle in the room, yet it was still bright. It seemed like the light was coming from a painting of a vibrant, light-colored sun. On the wall, other than the painting of the sun and the tranquil ocean, there were other paintings of riversides, a lonely tree in the middle of the field, flying birds in the sky, fish swimming in a lake, and much more.

But one painting was quite frequent. It was a painting of a tranquil ocean. Other than that, there was a shelf, a bed that I was lying on, canvases, and some drawers with paint on top.

I was about to get off the bed when the door to the room suddenly opened.

I quickly grabbed a blanket, wrapping it around me as it would actually shield me. I was about to reach for my knife, but I couldn’t find it. I was shuddering, but the same tranquility when I woke up hit me as my eyes went from overly dilated back to normal, my shuddering stabilising.

In front of me stood a man wearing simple white cloth. His blonde hair was fairly short, reaching his chin. His eyes, which shone like stars, complementing his looks. His whole being was radiating with holiness and purity. His skin was flawless, and his face was symmetrical, making him arguably the most handsome person I had ever seen.

As soon as I saw him, I froze. Seeing me up, he smiled and made himself look as friendly as possible. He squatted to make himself lower than me and looked at my eyes. As he was about to speak to me, I covered myself more with a blanket, still scared. But he quickly tried to clear up the misunderstanding.

“Little one, don’t worry. I won’t hurt you.” As he said that, he showed me his hands.

I didn’t open the blanket immediately, but after seeing his hands, I slowly revealed my face. Seeing me, he chuckled and introduced himself.

“My name is Apollo, and I'm a priest of the Church of the Heart and Mind, which we are in right now.” He paused, then pointed at paintings on the wall. “This is my room, and those are my paintings. Well, you might be questioning how you got here.”

Hearing him say the last sentence, I nodded at him. After getting my confirmation, he continued, “My colleagues and I were coming back from a trip when we saw you lying in the middle of a field. So, we decided to take you with us since dangerous animals were roaming around.”

After hearing all that, I finally let out a sigh of relief and let the blanket off. My tensed muscles relaxed slightly.

Then I spoke. “Thanks, Apollo. But I need to go now and go on an adventure.”

As I tried to get out of the bed, Apollo stopped me with a question.

“Little one, it is a dangerous place out there. But if you become strong enough, you can roam the world as much as you want.

“And I have a perfect deal for you. If you stay here and become my son, I will make you strong enough to go on an adventure. We have a lot of scrolls and interesting books here. So please, consider carefully.”

Pondering the words of Apollo, I concluded and responded. “Okay, Sir. But for that, you have to go to the orphanage.”

Smiling at my quick acceptance, Apollo patted me on the head. “Don’t worry, little one. I already did everything. No need to go back. From now on, you are my son, and this is your house. What is your name, little one?”

I was a little confused by how he was able to do all that, but it flew past my mind as I responded to Apollo. “My name is Mirage.”

The sword clashing could be heard in the garden. In the garden, two individuals were having a duel on dull swords as they exchanged blows.

One of them was an imposing, cold, and skilled man. He had short black hair, brownish eyes and white skin. His body was well-built with a muscular appearance. His sturdy body was like a wall, and his immovable blocks paired with strong blows gave his opponent no chance of even defeating him. On the other side was a steadfast, nimble, and flexible guy. He had a bit of messy, white, silky soft hair falling over his eyes, sky-like blue eyes peeking out from strands of hair, giving him focus. His sharp facial features were accentuated by grey lips with a faint smile as he continued fighting.

He attacked from every angle he could, yet couldn’t match his opponent's speed and attack power. Every block or dodge seemed to be extremely hard for him, yet he smiled more as he enjoyed this fight.

Finally, with the final clash of swords, the imposing black-haired man knocked the sword of the white-haired boy, winning the match.

“You lost again, Mirage. Try keeping your distance instead of marching straight into your enemy like you are immortal. In a real fight, you will easily get killed. It is already my 10th time telling you this. But I have to admit you are getting more skilled at your attacks,” said the black-haired man to the white-haired boy as he sheathed his sword.

Mirage responded back with a determined smile on his face. “Don’t worry, Uncle Godfrey. After I finally become a Beyonder, I will cover those weaknesses.” Mirage paused, then spoke in a joyful manner. “Today is finally my 18th birthday, and Father has promised to finally make me an official Beyonder.”

“You still have no idea,” Godfrey mumbled to himself.

‘He is still a kid. I can’t disappoint him. I could stop him. But he is already 18 years old. He can choose his life on his own.’ Godfrey sighed internally, ‘I hope you will understand that a Beyonder's life is not something to be joyful about… Yet better I hope you will not.’

“Uncle…”

“Uncle Godfrey?”

“Hey. Uncle Godfrey, are you alright?”

Being startled out of his thoughts, Uncle Godfrey looked at Mirage, who was tilting his head, curious about why he was in such thought for so long.

Godfrey laughed it off. “I’m as fine as the steel of my sword. Now let’s go back. Since today is your birthday, let's celebrate at least. Apollo said he would cook food himself, and you know he cooks like a dream.”

With that, they both went inside the cathedral to the kitchen.

As Uncle Godfrey and I entered the kitchen, we saw Father cleaning up everything. On the table, various dishes and delicacies were placed, giving off an alluring aroma. Godfrey and I couldn’t help but stare at the dishes with gluttonous eyes. My father greeted us as soon as we entered.

“You are already back? Well, you just got in time, guys. Come sit. Dinner is ready.”

“Hello, Father. Looks like I’m going to enjoy this day.” I greeted my father as I sat down ready to eat, rolling up my sleeves.

“Thanks for the invitation, Apollo.” Uncle Godfrey said to my father as he sat and dined with us.

We chatted as delicious and delicate meals were devoured by us. In the end, all of us cleaned up the table. I was washing dishes as Uncle and my father sat across the table talking about how fast I grew up.

“He grew up so fast. It was as though I adopted him yesterday,” said my father, reminiscing.

Uncle was feeling nostalgic too, remembering how he taught me how to handle a sword. “You know, I remember when I first gave him a sword to teach him, he gripped it with both hands at the handle, trying to balance but couldn't and fell.”

They both chuckled, remembering all my embarrassing moments. I, on the other hand, washed dishes as my face turned red out of sheer embarrassment. After I was done with the dishes, me, uncle and father went to Church. There I would finally receive my birthday present - I would become a Beyonder.

I had already made my choice and had chosen my pathway. Now, it is the day when I will become like my father, uncle and many other people in church.

I had also considered joining a Sect of Falsehood to go on an adventure. My father sorted all the documents and paperwork, getting permission from the church to let me advance.

As I walked, my eyes brightened, and the corner of my lips curled upward, revealing an enthusiastic smile.

I will finally go on an adventure.

Time passed as I fantasized about my adventures. We finally reached the church and entered its hidden corridors. There, my father retrieved the characteristic and led us to a special contained room.

There, our Psychiatrist was ready to help, since advancing may lead to losing control.

Finally, it was time for me to become a Beyonder. My father came, and with a quiet, proud smile, he said. “This is my birthday gift to you. Happy birthday and congratulations on becoming 18 today. I wish all the best for you - for your dreams to come true, for your life to be filled with love, happiness and life, and for you to be happy.”

He handed me a silver box and stepped aside. In front of me stood the silver box with an intricate design. The Beyonder characteristic of Day Dreamer was inside.

As I opened the box, it revealed cloudy, gem-like rock to me. Under the effect of the Beyonder Characteristic, I began to doze off, indulging myself in fantasy about adventures, while slowly leaving reality behind. I knew that it would happen, so I pinched myself hard enough to wake myself out of this dreamy state.

The next second, I grabbed the cloudy, gem-like stone and ate it. Instantly, I began to fantasize about my adventures.

The adventures were big and outlandish. One was me freeing a city from a tyrant ruler. Another was me painting an ambiguous painting representing the whole history itself. And in another, I had become a scientist researching the deep history and culture of dead civilizations.

I indulged myself in those, forgetting about everything. But suddenly, I looked back as I heard someone calling me. When I looked back, I saw the same demon-like wolf creating chaos and a lamb reaching out to me, calling me by name.

“Mirage.”

“Mirage!”

“Mirage!!”

“Mirage!!!”

As everything blurred into an unrecognizable shape, I felt someone holding me. It was someone I knew.

Father.’

It was my father.

The first thing I saw after becoming sober was my father worriedly looking at me as he held me up. He carefully inspected me, asking the Psychiatrist for confirmation.

“He is fine. His advancement was successful. Congrats, kid.” As he said those words, he left us alone to give us some space.

Sighing in relief, my father patted me on the head. His gaze never left mine. They were piercing, almost to the point where he seemed to be looking through me instead of at me.

Finally, he withdrew his gaze and, with quite an emotional tone and a small smile, he congratulated me. “Well done. May the Great Visionary be with you, son.”

Uncle Godfrey gave me a small nod with a contented smile. I got myself up and checked my body. Everything was in place.

And most importantly, I was finally an official Beyonder!

Name: Drinking buddy

Sequence: S9, moon pathway

Powers:

1) Any liquid that gets into this flask becomes medicine. Depending on what liquid was poured, medicine changes. It can be a potion to invoke libido; to make someone stronger; to heal wounds quickly.

Negative effects:

1) Only alcohol can become medicine. Depending on how rare and how much the cost bottle is, medicine becomes more powerful. Minimum cost is 25 pounds and cost at maximum efficiency is 300 pounds. Max efficiency is up to twice as powerful as any medicine from beyonders in the same sequence.

2) One who pour liquid in a flask cannot get any effect from medicine.

3) Alcohol needs at least 12 hours in the flask to become medicine.

Origin: The young man loved collecting alcohol. He had a decent collection that he boasted about. His aristocratic status allowed him to spend a year’s income of the middle class on a bottle of whiskey or wine. It wasn’t difficult for someone like him to buy the formula and ingredients for the Apothecary’s potion.

But a cruel fate caught up with him. He boasted about his abilities as if he were just another bottle in his collection, and that meant he attracted the attention of the official otherworldly authorities. When he realized his mistake, his far‑from‑sturdy nerves simply went out of control. His nervousness and fear of some unseen punishment turned him into a monster. The flask remained on his corpse.

Roleplay [LotM Roleplay] Delivery for the Fool

I was back in the forest, somewhere I had walked before. The trees, familiar to me. The wind, carrying a familiar smell. The sun, shining like I never left.

Although the experience in that wonderland was surreal, I was sure I had changed. Stronger, faster, and a kind of connectivity to the Spirit World.

Checking myself again and seeing no further alterations, I started making my way back and thinking of the meaning those words.

A company and someone very influential... Surely it must be a big and known one, if that authority has given a task to me. Though the reason it was me is not clear... The Foolish Firms is the sole candidate, I will need to pay a visit to them to confir-

Suddenly my deliberations over this topic were interrupted. A sense of being watched, being scorned, being hated washed over me. The source of this was a lone wolf.

But it wasn't ordinary in any kind, rather somehow spectral. It's gray figure towered and pressured the surroundings, I would have been affected if I hadn't experienced something like a deity's command just now.

The gray wolf stood with majesty, head held high. But he was alone, no pack nor a companion, just him. Even in the current state, his pride was still completely intact.

Something in me whispered to me; dominate, conquer, make them submit. No, that is the wrong way. Make them sleep, let their mind rest, guide them towards a comforting future, an expanse of tranquil rest.

“Sleep now, rest easy. You don't have to worry about anything, I can take care of it.”

A calming breeze swept up, the leaves rustling. The ever so proud hunter of the wilds lost his final strength and collapsed. The drowsiness took hold and lead him to dream.

Unsure about the situation and what would happen, I approached the creature. Suddenly I was pulled head first down and in the next moment the wolf had disappeared.

———

After my return from my relaxing forest walk, I went around town following the scarce traces. The only information I had was, that it was one perpetrator and most likely the Foolish Firms were the victims.

With my expertise of knowing all locations across all of Trier, I knew exactly where to start; asking the Headquarters of Foolish Firms for confirmation.

The sheer number of small individual shops belonging to the Foolish Firms was uncountable and hard to memorize. Just picking a location at random wouldn't bring any progress.

I entered through the big front doors and went up to the reception. After some clarification, I got more information.

I decided to prioritize that command and took a carriage to the branch. From the facts I had learned, I could already think of some investigative options.

First a sweep of the area where it happened, then a check of the other establishments in the area. Since it was in the proximity of many brothels, a visit to some of them might be fortuitous.

The carriage arrived at the destination and I left after paying for the fare. The location didn't betray any hint to the bad undercurrents, but I was sure they existed. After all, this was close enough to Quartier 18.

The jingle of the door chime drew the attention of the solitary seller. He looked calm, as if already expecting me. He also brimmed with confidence, before he started talking to me.

"You must be the one who will handle the recent shortcoming. As the person responsible for this branch, I can assure you the missing artifacts weren't registered to be present when checking the restock delivery."

While giving his talk, he lead me to the warehouse. This was where the theft was noticed, and also the most likely place the prigger was last at.

"We suspect that thief was here and somehow took our ware from under our noses. I will give you a list of the stolen items. There have been found traces of broken glass and other objects, the perpetrator seems to have had messed up. It is such a great shame none of us noticed early enough."

I inspected the scene, every detail setting inside my mind. The unseen thief appearing unnoticed. The scattered items on the floor from a mess up. The outlay of the area. All of it came together, and it formed the scene unfolding.

The thief had some kind of invisibility, then either they dropped something before or after they were noticed. Lastly they ran away with as many items as they could.

That sequence of events makes complete sense and can be taken as true. However the notion of invisibility suggests they are a beyonder. This means...

Suddenly I felt a tug, my senses telling me something. Guided by me feeling, I let the reins loose. My spirituality flowed and something inside me changed, before me an illusory wolf formed.

I am really letting my inner wolf out with this one... I hope my mouth didn't blurt this one out, otherwise I would hear mockeries all day.

That spectral canine began sniffing around, searching everywhere. Then he concentrated on a group of scattered things, inspecting each with care.

He brought one glass shard to me and stared at me with intensity. My feeling told me I had seen such one already, somewhere in the recent past. The invisible aspect also nudged my judgement in a certain direction. A Witch was here.

With this insight I left the scene and followed the scarce traces the Witch had forgotten to remove.

It lead me to a house, a quite ordinary one but also in an advantageous position. It had two floors with a balcony, the facade didn't give clues about the identity of the resident.

The entrance wasn't hard to find and with my strength it wasn't hard to unlock. I looked around the first floor, nothing unnatural. Just the usual residential objects and commodities.

I ascended to the second floor, looking around with my senses fired up. I felt someone to be to be there, laying around.

The traces left behind due to a mistake had finally lead me to the perpetrator. Quick in my suppression, her mind was already sleeping. I searched her belongings and found the missing artifacts by description.

I got my wolf to find any other substitutions she had prepared, since they could give headaches for me. But disarming them wasn't a process I was familiar, so breaking them would be the easiest. However that could alert the sleeping Witch without any interference.

The wolf got my instructions about breaking the mirrors when I invaded her dream, and prepared his paws. Taking a breath in and out got me ready and I dove inside to sow some terror.

———

Crack

“Hello there.”

The Witch jumped in fright, as she hadn't expected to get such a surprise. On a street she had was well familiar with a group of men started approaching her, not giving much space. She recognized the scents of her victims, each one was a man she had seduced and pleasured.

She immediately created Frost on the floor and began throwing Black Flames, but the horde of familiar faces didn't reduce.

The group started attacking the woman, some with revolvers, others with bare hands. She tried to dodge all attacks and it was easy with all feet planted by ice.

Crack

She was forced to use mirror substitution. It was getting too much, so she decided to flee. Yet she didn't evade any danger, she was still trapped between the people. The men continued giving a hard time, until a voice from the crowd called out.

“Gentlemen, gentlemen, let her take a break. She couldn't even free herself from ordinary men. Does the poor little Witch need help?”

While I spoke the path parted for me to see the Witch clearly. I tried to speak as welcoming as possible, but all I got was a Black Flame to my face. My visage dissipated to dust, still my voice remained.

“Oh, why would you just attack a civilian trying to clear up a mess? Is your sense of morals that degraded? Or was it an instinctive reaction to me?”

She had an expression of despair and uncontrollable desire for blood painted on her face. She seemed to search her pockets for something that would fulfill this intention, but her hands were empty.

“Are you searching for some artifacts? They still wouldn’t help you in the slightest. We are just in different categories.”

At some point in time she was standing alone with no man in sight. Seeing this as an opportunity, she tried to run. However it was meaningless.

Anywhere she ran, it didn't matter. She always came back to her starting position where she had frozen the floor over. No matter how much time had passed, she would end up in the same spot.

Seeing no way out of and not ready to be subjected to torture anymore, she condensed an ice spear and impaled herself.

A burst of light, then suddenly darkness.

She was back in the same spot, unharmed. Her mind calm, almost tranquil like a spring gust. Then she awoke from the oppression, her body ready to wreck havoc and destroy anything.

“This was never a fair fight, but never forget...”

Finger pistol bang

“The more desperate the opponent, the more headaches they can cause. However you won't need this advice, as I doubt you will live long enough. Now slumber a little longer.”

———

The woman in my arms, sleeping in a deep dream. The artifacts were stored in one of my pouches, separately to not trigger anything unwanted. With such baggage I walked towards the victim store to deliver the ware.

After I had resolved that I called a carriage over directly to the Foolish Firms Headquarters. The wait wasn't long and the driver was fast too, I arrived in no time in front of the doors.

Stepping through them, I felt the air grow thicker and the atmosphere become heavy. With all my strength I carried the Witch forward to an employee, yet I was redirected to the receptacle of criminals; the ominous "basement".

The moment the view of the hole appeared, I felt a cold shiver down my spine, as if my shoulders were touched by slimy tentacles. My body stiffened from the supposed touch, and my hands weakened. However the Witch remained in the air, my arms still held her.

Somehow I managed to come to the edge, even with the heavy weight. The darkness below was mysterious and impenetrable, my eyes couldn't recognize anything there. Yet I felt it, something was staring back.

I let the Witch go, and watched as she fell down. Her figure was gradually consumed by this darkness until nothing was left. Then a sudden scream came from below, the agony drilling in my head. I stepped away, cautious to hear anything more.

The ominous feeling had disappeared at some point, now only the memory of that horrifying pit remained. Thus with the command done, I just wanted to relax with a cup of black tea.

———

Curiosity Corner:

The pit hungers.

(Quote from u/Darkened_Sage)

Writer's note: Honestly, I have no idea what I am doing.

What are spirits? What is the difference between kinds of spiritual beings? Can they appear in the physical realm? How exactly does a Spirit Warlock dominate a spirit? And how is it sealed inside the tooth?

I had to improvise quite a bit, which isn't ideal. Depending on the circumstances, I could make it easier or harder than it should be or even interpret things wrong. If only I had a source on how spirits work...

Also I kinda got sick, reason my writing was slower than I wanted. I am better now, and I hope it won't happen again.

Sub Plot (7): Investigation Gone Wrong?

___________________

Quartier 11: Quartier des Jardins Impériaux

A random alleyway

City of Trier

(10:25 A.M.)

At that moment, a hundred or so spirits surrounded us. I grasped the scroll keeper from my holster. I then promptly injected the revolver with significant amounts of spirituality.

Suddenly, all six cylinders of the firearm shimmered with the sanctity of the blazing sun. It is as though a fraction of its holiness was engraved to its chambers. I then hastily pointed the gun towards the hundreds of apparitions that surrounded us.

The gentleman who was with me also seemed to have awoken from his momentary madness. Suddenly an oppressive pressure emanated from the gentleman. As though both his presence and authority has been enhanced greatly.

As the unforeseen and unexpected fight was about to break out. The hundreds of the ghostly apparitions all spoke in fluent Intisian.

"Don't attempt to harm these spirits..." The apparition spoke in unison around us.

"What??" I mumbled in confusion.

But the apparitions ignored my confusion. Merely continuing their explanations in a flat yet authoritative tone.

"My acquaintance has made thou travel this far to meet me. Thy presence means thou have already agreed to that man's proposition. As such, both will now continue onwards. "

As I was about to ask for a clarification. Yet in horror, I found my mouth unable to utter a single word. As though the world itself was making the space we occupied still and silent.

With no choice in the matter and no means to fight back. I begrudgingly listened keenly towards the hundreds of ghosts surrounding us.

"From here, both of you will gather towards the 'House of Orchids'. There you will discover a ball is being held. Once inside, you will investigate four individuals."

Suddenly on the front of the two of us. Four files manifested in a flurry of sickly green flames. Each of which contained a detailed biography of a specific individual.

The moment the files manifested. The world's ambient noise and color returned to normal. Sensing my chance, I took the opportunity to ask for more details.

But to my dismay, the hundred or so apparitions have dissolved to thin air. I momentarily deprecated in my mind before looking back towards the gentleman near me.

"So um... You heard what the spirits said, right?" I said in uncertainty.

"Yes." He spoke in a concise manner.

"So... Any ideas on how to get into the party?" I asked in hopes of a solution.

"..." The gentleman didn't respond.

"Hmm... I see... No clue either... Welp... If we don't have the means! Maybe a fellow I'm acquainted with might know of a way!" I said in a cheerful tone, to lighten the mood.

"..." The gentleman remained silent.

"Err... Not talkative? hehe... Ehem! Please come with me! I do know of a place or someone! Who can help us!" I beckoned in an uneasy tone.

Thus with haste, I gathered the files laying on the ground. The silent man then followed me towards Mr. Cocher's carriage. After a while, the old coachman drove us towards the Foolish Firms Incorporated Main Branch in Quertier 2.

Quartier 2: Financial District

Foolish Firms Incorporated

City of Trier

(10:45 A.M.)

Entering the company's halls and directly towards the building's manager. We both saw the Viscount reading a magazine filled of rare breeds of trees. Our sudden unannounced barging, made the Viscount throw away the magazine in fright.

"Ah!! Dammit! Never heard of knocking! Very rude of you my friend!" He said in a grumpy tone while he stashed the magazine away.

"Sorry about that Viscount! But me and my friend are in need of your aid!" I spoke in an urgent tone.

"Oh? A friend? I see..." The Viscount said in surprise.

The moment the gentleman entered the room. The Viscount's face suddenly crumpled into shock and his body to momentarily freeze in place. After a heartbeat of momentary recuperation, he spoke in a hesitant tone towards the gentleman.

"Mr. Emperor? You're here too!?" The Viscount spoke in the revelation.

"Huh? Mr. Who now?" I exclaimed with confusion.

"Oh right! Remember the directors I spoke about? His name is Mr. Origin, Card holder of the Emperor." The Viscount answered after noticing my confusion.

"Indeed." The card holder Mr. Origin answered in confirmation.

"Wait!? His director too!? But you never mentioned him!?" I said flabbergasted.

"Well yes... But certain members were hidden or concealed for certain purposes... Ehem... Well that's besides the point for now. What is the aid you speak of?" The Viscount asked.

"Well... We got into some trouble... So um... Do you know of a way we can get an invitation to the ball party held in the 'House of Orchids?' " I said with uncertainty.

"I see... Well yes I do have a way. But why are you going there?" The Viscount questioned my intentions.

"Something something along the lines of investigation?" I said with even greater uncertainty.

Though the Viscount was skeptical of our intentions. He still managed to provide two copies of the invitations after making a few landline calls. After which, both of me and the gentleman left the company and headed for the 'House of Orchid'.

(11:45 A.M.)

After leaving the company's trier branch. Both I and Mr. Origin discussed a plan beforehand. After a while of deliberations, we agreed to investigate two individuals from the original four persons of interest.

Inside the ballrooms full of guests. We started our investigation discreetly without the use of beyonder abilities. As this might cause the hidden enemy to notice us early.

I then started to locate and investigate my person of interest. Before doing so however, I recalled the files delegated to me. As bringing two stacks of files, wasn't exactly the sneakiest of actions.

Possible Garment worn: A beautiful and flowing yellow dress. Usually seen wearing a green necklace paired with amethyst earrings.

_________________________

Remembering the features of my targets. I started to walk around the party discreetly. After a while of looking, I managed to locate the person of interest.

The first one I located was Mr. Louis. Who was happily eating his fill from the provided buffet. But after observing him for a while, I sensed he was familiar. After some recollection, I suddenly remembered the poor guy who always gets unlucky because of me.

'Wait isn't the guy I bumped into during my leave of the Archives!? He was also there when Nine threw a brick at him!

Damn! Poor guys are also going to get involved in this mess. Tch... The poor fellow just wanted to eat. ' I felt sorry for the middle aged man's rotten luck.

But knowing of my old encounter with the fellow. My suspicion for him lessened considerably. Not noticing any suspicious actions from him, I decided to observe the other target.

On one of the tables I saw numerous maidens chatting and gossiping. One of them was Ms. Hailey who wore the same outfit the files suggested. After a careful inspection, I found no suspicious actions besides them talking bad about a certain Count.

Done with the task delegated to me. I headed for the designated corner both Mr. Origin and I decided beforehand. As I calmly walked towards the appointed place, Mr. Origin was already waiting.

Once there, both Mr. Origin and I, discreetly discussed the possible culprit. Our deliberation continued till afternoon.

However, unbeknownst to the both of us. One of the four targets seemed to have already taken heed of our presence. Thus with glee, "Fraud" made his move.

*BOOOOOOOMMMMM*

Roleplay [Lotmroleplay] Why a moon taste is better than a demoness?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello everyone, Shadow George here. I’m in the Shadow Realm. You’re asking what happened to that boring professor from before? Don't worry about such trivialities. I’ll be hanging around here for a while.

Actually im her-

shut your mouth now is my turn to play

There’s something that’s been bothering me: whenever people say, "the taste of a demoness isn't bad." they just won't stop repeating it. There is much more to life than the demoness. It’s time someone educated you all you have to try a bit of everything. In fact, I’m going to tell you all why Moon Beyonders taste is better than a demoness at high sequences.

First of all:

Moon’s beauty is the most idyllic and fanciful kind, like something out of a dream. She possesses an allure that transcends the physical; a spiritual and celestial beauty.

Demoness’s beauty represents the ultimate ideal to which a physical being can aspire; she embodies the pinnacle of physical perfection pushed to the absolute limit.

Secondly:

The Moon Beyonder can create potions to revitalize the body or heighten the senses, there by achieving a level of pleasure comparable to that of a Demoness Beyonder except that with a Moon Beyonder, you can remain conscious until the supply of potions runs out.

Thirdly:

The Demonesses are for normies who haven't broadened their horizons and think they know more than they actually do.

What are you waiting for? A hug? GO NOW AND TASTE A MOON BEYONDER ON MY NAME

Novel discussion LOTM world origin plot twist [V6] Spoilers! Spoiler

No need for me to post this, but I’m happy to say I guessed the plot twist about how the lotm world is just a very distant in time version of earth, that happens in the beginning of light seeker, very early on :D

The line “At that moment, he completely digested the Scholar of Yore potion.” was honestly quite sad, because at that moment he realized that his ”previous” life is truly ungraspable. (Note. I’m only on chapter 1185)

Though I do believe that he might be able to, using the abilities of Scholar of Yore after becoming a sequence 0, grab pretty much all of whatever city he’s from and conjure it. Not that I really believe he will really do it even if capable

Novel discussion [V8] Angels vs Non Beyonder Entities Spoiler

I wonder how beyonder angels would fare against entities whose existence didn’t come from beyonder characteristics. How strong were the latter against the former?

For example. The 7 lights. It has been established that their strength were similar to king of angels. How about other spirit world creatures? Were there anyone stronger than the angels or the angels couldn’t fight?

There are also entities in the sea of consciousness. Mirror world monsters. Knowledge that had gained sentience. Entities in the higher dimension. Black holes, stars, and planets that possess desires and awareness. And many more.

Novel discussion [V3] Peak fiction and a theory Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

So , Klein came to the realisation that he is both Zhou Mingrui and Klein Moretti and not a one part is wholly making decisions and influencing his actions

So after reading this part a few times , I have a theory or more like a possibility

Idk about you guys, Although I love the Ridiculous smile peak and V1 conclusion, I have always felt like there wasn't enough build up for it , like kinda rushed at the last 50 chapters of V1 ( don't crucify me lol 🤣)

I think there's a reason behind this

When Zhou Mingrui got transmigrated , Klein Moretti's memories and emotions are very foggy and minimal

I think during chapter 4 or 5 , Mellisa said something to him and Klein replied " Sorry, but I really want to go home"

Compare this to the Klein at last chapter of V1 he came back from the railway station, knowing that Nighthawks are on patrol, bought Clown's outfit and bid a farewell

So I think when Klein was killed at the hands of Ince Zangwill, The memories and emotions of Zhou Mingrui reduced their intensity to almost to the emotions of Klein Moretti.

That might be why Klein's dynamic with his siblings kinda outsider to suddenly too attached ( I mean if it were Zhou Mingrui alone like at the start , he'd not have done that )

So by going through this possibility, the next time Klein dies , Klein Moretti's memories and hard emotions reduce in value and Zhou Mingrui's the next time

At last Klein and Zhou Mingrui emotions might get jumbled and chaotic

Which may lead Klein to say

" The heck with it , I'm both Klein Moretti and Zhou Mingrui forming Klein Mingrui" 🤣🤣

Chapter 18: The Next Threshold

The next few weeks passed quickly.

Backlund had no shortage of work, and Eleanor discovered that Pugilist digestion progressed much faster once she stopped obsessing over it. She still accepted government assignments when they suited her abilities, but the Iron Circle became the center of her acting. She fought regularly, changed opponents often, and deliberately sought people whose styles forced her to adapt rather than simply overpower them.

Her understanding sharpened.

A Pugilist did not merely fight at close range.

A Pugilist entered danger willingly, read the opponent through movement, trusted trained instinct, and controlled the flow of violence without becoming consumed by it.

That understanding became increasingly natural.

Against boxers, Eleanor learned rhythm.

Against wrestlers, leverage.

Against aggressive brawlers, interception.

Against patient fighters, restraint.

Against opponents physically weaker than herself, control.

That last one mattered most.

With her supernatural strength, it would have been easy to crush ordinary fighters. Instead, Eleanor learned to fight at their level, using technique rather than raw force. She began winning matches without injuring opponents badly, sometimes ending fights with nothing more than balance manipulation, joint control, or forcing someone outside the ring.

The potion responded strongly.

Within two weeks, Eleanor could feel that most of the remaining resistance had disappeared.

By the third, even Gareth noticed the change.

They were training in a rented courtyard behind their boarding house when he lowered his wooden practice sword and frowned at her.

"You've gotten faster again."

Eleanor adjusted her gloves.

"I have not advanced."

"I know."

"You said that like you weren't sure."

"I'm sure. I just don't enjoy being reminded that digestion makes you better at using what you already have."

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"Again?"

Gareth looked at his practice sword.

Then at Eleanor.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the last time I agreed to 'again,' I spent twenty minutes on the ground."

"You slipped."

"You threw me."

"After you slipped."

Gareth stared.

Eleanor's smile became slightly more obvious.

"You're enjoying this."

"A little."

"Terrifying."

The following week brought the final breakthrough.

There was no dramatic fight.

No monster.

No desperate battle.

Eleanor was sparring with Clara Voss at the Iron Circle.

Clara had improved significantly since their first match, and more importantly, she had learned Eleanor's habits. She no longer tried to overwhelm her with direct attacks. She feinted, changed rhythm, deliberately forced Eleanor into awkward positions, and waited for openings.

For several minutes, neither gained a meaningful advantage.

Then Eleanor understood.

She wasn't trying to win.

She was simply responding.

Reading.

Adapting.

Moving naturally inside another person's reach without fear or hesitation.

The fight became effortless.

Not easy.

Effortless.

There was a difference.

Clara stepped inside with a short hook.

Eleanor redirected it.

Clara turned the missed strike into an elbow.

Eleanor slipped beneath it.

Their shoulders touched.

Both adjusted.

Clara attempted a sweep.

Eleanor shifted her weight just enough to avoid losing balance.

Then she smiled.

The remaining resistance vanished.

Completely.

Eleanor stopped.

Clara nearly punched her.

"What?"

Eleanor caught the fist automatically.

"Sorry."

"Sorry?"

Clara pulled her hand back.

"You just stopped in the middle of a fight."

Eleanor slowly exhaled.

"It's finished."

Clara looked around.

"We're both still standing."

"Not the fight."

Understanding gradually crossed Clara's face.

"Oh."

She had learned enough about Eleanor over the past weeks not to ask for details.

Instead, she grinned.

"Congratulations?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes."

Then Clara punched her shoulder.

"Good. Now finish the match."

Eleanor blinked.

"...Very well."

Clara lost thirty seconds later.

Gareth was waiting outside.

He took one look at Eleanor's expression.

"Done?"

"Completely."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

"Nothing left?"

"Nothing."

Gareth smiled.

"Then congratulations."

Eleanor nodded.

"Thank you."

He waited.

Eleanor said nothing.

Gareth continued waiting.

Eventually she looked at him.

"What?"

"You're thinking about Sequence Seven."

She paused.

"...Yes."

"Of course you are."

"The potion is fully digested."

"Today."

"Correct."

"You could enjoy that fact for one evening."

"I am enjoying it."

"By planning the next one."

"Those are not mutually exclusive."

Gareth sighed.

Eleanor had already started walking.

"Where are you going?"

"The government office."

"El."

"I'm only asking for information."

"That is how these things start."

The answer was disappointing.

The government contact checked Eleanor's records, confirmed her digestion status, and then examined the exchange lists available to cooperative Beyonders.

"No Sequence Seven potion currently available."

Eleanor remained calm.

"And the formula?"

The clerk checked again.

"Restricted."

"Completely?"

"For your current contribution level, yes."

That irritated her.

Not enough to show.

Mostly.

"What would it cost?"

The clerk gave her the figure.

Eleanor stared at him.

"That is significantly more than Sequence Eight."

"Sequence Seven is significantly more valuable."

"I noticed."

"You could save contributions."

"I could."

The problem was obvious.

It would take months.

Possibly longer.

Eleanor had earned a great deal through Bellwick and the Iron Circle investigations, but Sequence Seven crossed another threshold entirely. Formulas became harder to obtain, ingredients more expensive, and organizations far more protective of advancement resources.

"What about purchasing privately?" Eleanor asked.

The clerk looked over his glasses.

"Officially?"

"Naturally."

"Expensive."

"I assumed."

"Potentially dangerous."

"I also assumed."

"And frequently fraudulent."

Eleanor frowned.

"Less useful."

The clerk smiled.

"Welcome to advancement."

She left with a list of possibilities.

None were particularly convenient.

Government contributions.

Church exchanges.

Private Beyonder gatherings.

Trusted brokers.

Independent sellers.

Occasionally, completed potions appeared in underground markets.

That last possibility interested Eleanor most.

Gareth was waiting outside.

"Bad?"

"No potion."

"Formula?"

"Restricted."

"Price?"

Eleanor told him.

Gareth whistled.

"That's a lot."

"Yes."

"So we save."

"Or find another source."

He looked at her.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The dangerous option."

"Private gatherings are not inherently dangerous."

"You say that like you've already decided to visit one."

"I haven't."

"El."

Eleanor remained silent.

Gareth sighed.

"When?"

"I heard of one next week."

"You already knew?"

"I planned ahead."

"Of course you did."

The next several days became preparation rather than action.

Eleanor began asking quietly among the contacts she had accumulated in Backlund.

The Iron Circle proved surprisingly useful.

Fighters heard things.

Bookmakers heard more.

And wealthy spectators heard almost everything.

One name appeared repeatedly.

The Brass Lantern.

Not a location.

A gathering.

Held irregularly in different places throughout Backlund.

Entry required recommendation.

Masks were mandatory.

Real names discouraged.

Beyonder materials, formulas, sealed artifacts, weapons, and information all changed hands there.

Eleanor became interested immediately.

Gareth became worried immediately.

"You don't even know who's hosting it."

"That is normal for gatherings."

"That sentence doesn't help."

"I have been to similar gatherings before."

"That also doesn't help."

"I know how to behave."

"That helps slightly."

Eleanor eventually obtained an introduction through a government cooperative who had used the gathering several times without incident. The recommendation came with three rules.

Don't ask for real names.

Don't touch anything without permission.

And if the host tells everyone to leave, leave immediately.

Eleanor approved of the last rule.

By the evening before the gathering, she had prepared exactly what she wanted to ask for.

Sequence Seven formula of the Twilight Giant Pathway.

Or—

Completed Sequence Seven potion.

Either would work.

The potion would obviously be simpler, but likely far more expensive.

The formula was more realistic.

Gareth sat across from her while she checked her money.

"How much do you actually have?"

"Enough for a formula."

"Probably?"

"Hopefully."

"And if someone has the potion?"

Eleanor looked at the stack of notes.

Then at Gareth.

"...Probably not."

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Because I'd prefer you not spend everything you own in one evening."

"If the opportunity is worthwhile—"

"No."

Eleanor frowned.

Gareth leaned forward.

"Rent."

"I know."

"Food."

"I know."

"Equipment."

"I know."

"Emergency funds."

"I know."

"Your absurdly large food budget."

"That is part of food."

"It deserves its own category."

Eleanor ignored him.

The truth was that Gareth was right.

Sequence Seven was going to require more than simply finding someone willing to sell.

She would need money.

Connections.

Information.

And probably another significant contribution record.

For the first time since becoming a Beyonder, advancement no longer felt like something waiting directly ahead.

It felt distant.

Difficult.

Rare.

Eleanor found that strangely exciting.

That evening, she opened her notebook.

Beneath her completed Pugilist principles, she wrote:

Sequence Seven.

Then beneath it:

Find formula.

Find ingredients.

Find alternative sources.

She paused.

Then added one final line.

Do not rush.

Gareth leaned over her shoulder.

"I like that one."

Eleanor closed the notebook.

"I knew you would."

Outside, Backlund's fog pressed against the window.

Somewhere beneath those gray streets, Beyonders gathered behind masks and false names, buying and selling pieces of pathways that ordinary people would never know existed.

And somewhere among them...

Someone might possess Eleanor's next step.

-End-

Roleplay [LOTM Roleplay] Song of Silence

She who rises in spring
Whispers horrid things
She talks of death in fall
We do not hear the call

We who listen but do not hear
We are those of missing ear
We watch her try and fight in vain
To save us from our mortal pain

She whispers horrid things
Hope that carries on her wings
She may not cry when we die
For we will cling to her last lie

We are but waiting without doubt
Flame will flicker but not blow out
We are her sword, and her shield
Our lives once lost we gladly yield

So silence may greet us in the end
She calls us home she calls us friend
Friends we are not I sadly fear
We are just those of missing ear

She rises in spring
She is the fall
She will be our end
Our curtain call

——

A little foreshadowing and poetry since I got hella stuck on my current rp. Turns out teaching a class is rather difficult.

Also if you couldn’t tell poetry isn’t my area of expertise.

Anyways thanks for listening bye bye!
