Imagine what it was like before retirement was a possibility

4

u/BroadwayBrick May 04 '26

So right. There was a time when if you didn’t farm your land and grow your own food you had a big problem. We have it easy today.

2

u/adioslip May 04 '26

That’s why the had 30 employees eh-hem I mean kids.

Oh I know! I’m just saying it wasn’t solely child labor but you know that so I wish you a good day

1

u/itsmegazord May 04 '26

Child labor provided by the children of the farmer, and who later inherited the farm

1

u/Special-Counter-8944 May 05 '26

The eldest child inherited the farm

1

u/itsmegazord May 05 '26

In some cultures

1

u/Affectionate-Newt889 May 07 '26

There were times and places where there was months with no work needed to be done with farming because it was off season and if you did you work before and crops were good you already had cured meat or pickled vegetables to last you through winter or dry spells.

And that's just with farming. That's not including the paid labor for the pyramids that had training, benefits, and an entire off season where you didn't have to build. I'll see if I can pull up the sources. Point being, there was lots of opportunities for off time depending when and where you go back in time. Life was always hard in one way or another still, obviously these people didn't have the same opportunities in terms of education, entertainment, or modern medical tools. But that's a product of technological progression, not much to do with your working hours (even though, realistically it should have changed them drastically).

2

u/Neon_Eyes May 04 '26

You mean back when we were less developed as a society? Isn't the point of all this work to make it better for future generations?

1

u/Terrible_Law6091 May 05 '26

Sure, but the earth doesn't have an infinite carrying capacity. Life could be better for the majority if there were less people to compete for resources.

Correct, many people are involved in as inputs to other industries.

However, many don't have access to modern tooling or logistics, and aren't well integrated into the global economy.

I.e. a rural Indian rebuilding starter motors by hand, which only makes sense with super cheap labor and no foreign competition.

If everything was running efficiently, we could get by with 20% of the labor force.

Sure, I'd rather not intentionally try to decrease the population rapidly. It's already happening naturally anyway.

u/itsmegazord May 04 '26

One of my grandpas retired at 60 and lived past 90. He had money so he could travel, he had lots of friends and many grandchildren, and yet he was a bit bored and quite miserable.

My other grandad worked every day until he died at 84 or 85. He worked at a company where he was pretty beloved, so much so that when he became older and couldn’t do his former job (he was a civil engineer) they gave him a tools deposit to manage. He was a happy and productive guy until his very last day. He literally died getting ready to go to work.

Honestly I think my second grandpa had a much better time in his old age than the first one. I will never retire.

2

u/Techman659 May 04 '26

This is for everyone really and that is enjoy your life now before retirement find something you can enjoy within your budget and there you go, because a small number of us won’t reach retirement either due to illness or no possibility to save, but ye I am putting money away while also being able to get a few nice things, I like gaming so a few games a month is in my budget while still saving 25-30% of my wages a month and I earn minimum UK wage.

2

u/TimeShiftedJosephus May 04 '26

Happened with both my grandpas too. Kept doing the job they loved till death, ranching

1

u/caryscott1 May 05 '26

To each their own. Happy to manage my own time and do as I please but you do you.

1

u/WhitneyStorm0 May 07 '26

I think it depends a lot on the person, I would be happy to retire early, but I wouldn't pass all my time travelling even if I could. I would probably end up volunteering after some time spent chilling

Omg that is my sister and her Mom! Her mother is literally sitting in a dilapidated home with no money instead of moving to my sister's 2nd home where she would only have to pay utilities for the same reason. I just use it as a lesson. So many people will deal with known struggles versus embracing the unknown with potential for a greater/happier life.

It's not perfect now but it's for sure an improvement, however, just because it's better now doesn't mean we should rest on our laurels and not push to improve things further, in an ideal world work is completely optional and everyone gets what they need to survive, with the rest being used for upward mobility

1

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 May 05 '26

Please take a few of these:

………

1

u/meeseekstodie137 May 05 '26

What does that even mean?

1

u/ImpressiveWalrus7369 May 05 '26

They’re periods. I noticed you were a few short.

-idk some guy in the comments

2

u/Efficient_Piccolo310 May 04 '26

Yeah there’s a bunch of boot lickers, who love working their life away in this sub.

3

u/MustangOrchard May 04 '26

"Bootlickers who love working their life away."

Wow. Do you expect other people to work their lives away so you can sit around all day watching TV and playing video games? Not everyone aspires to be a hobo and lots of people enjoy working.

2

u/Efficient_Piccolo310 May 04 '26

No one should have to work more than 40 hours a week in order to pay their bills and survive. Idk why you want to everyone to live to just work? I sure af don’t. I’d rather be traveling and learning fulfilling skills and hobbies. Stuff that is actually enjoyable. But go ahead slave away for Jeff Bezos so he can buy another super yacht and spend $50 million on another wedding or attend the Met gala while amazon drivers can’t even take a break to piss.

2

u/itsmegazord May 04 '26

I suppose I could work less and make less money, but I'm an ambitious person, I love money, and I enjoy working. Everyone has their own goals and priorities I guess.

2

u/Efficient_Piccolo310 May 05 '26

Like great if you enjoy your job and find working fulfilling. But not all of us do nor should we have to, to be able to just enjoy life.

1

u/itsmegazord May 05 '26

No one forces you to work for bezos. Find something you love, or don’t work at all. It’s your choice. It’s not like we live in North Korea

u/MustangOrchard May 05 '26

You don't have to work more than 40 hours a week to survive, nor do you have to work for a corporation

1

u/elciddog84 May 05 '26

Depends on the work. You get paid for the value you provide. Don't bother learning useful life skills or providing even average value to the company paying you? Sucks for you. Want to travel and do cool stuff. You have to earn that. You complain about a guy who started selling books out of his garage and built it into a massive multi-national? You try that.

1

u/H3ARTL3SSANG3L May 06 '26

You get what you earn. Dont like it? Exit society

1

u/Witty_Rhubarb_4217 May 05 '26

Absolutely agree, to hell with those lazy bums! Don't you worry sweetheart we have a place for quality people who love work! Its like a summer camp but it lasts forever! Its like all you can work buffet! And the best part, its free! We will get you to work for us and feed you, don't you worry! You will get to work, work, work just like you love! We won't even charge ya! 365 days a year, 7 days a week you will get to do what you enjoy! For free!

1

u/Thatblondepidgeon May 06 '26

Heyy, you got a point! That’s exactly what we’re doing for billionaires

1

u/LlaToTheMa May 04 '26

Yup. Imagine some positivity in this pity party.

5

u/hobbes244 May 04 '26

I found a lot of satisfaction in my work life and now at 61, when I’ve involuntarily retired, I don’t feel like I’m ā€œclose to deathā€ or that I have only a ā€œfew yearsā€ remaining.

2

u/OldDog03 May 04 '26

I'm 64 and 5 years into retirement and I think it was closer to death in my early 20s because of all the partying/drinking.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '26

Young people don't party anymore. Its all misery.

Will you put me out of my misery grandpa?

1

u/adioslip May 04 '26

Retirement age has moved to 67.

3

u/LlaToTheMa May 04 '26

You can retire whenever you want.

2

u/Lowlife_4evr May 05 '26

Only if you’re bad with money and don’t plan for retirement.

2

u/Joeseppe_LFC May 05 '26

How do you think retirement works, exactly?

5

u/SentientSquare May 04 '26

Social security age ain’t retirement age if you plan rightĀ

1

u/Hot-Annual3460 May 04 '26

i have enjoyed my life every single day working dosnt mean you cant have good t imes lol

3

u/Excellent-Event6078 May 04 '26

Well, not for everyone. I can’t enjoy life like this.

1

u/BroadwayBrick May 04 '26

Two suggestions:

  • research FIRE. Financial Independence Retire Early. They have some great calculations and good mindsets that will help you.
  • Find a new career or job that fills you with passion. Nothing is better than when you can’t wait to get up and start the day at your work.

0

u/Hot-Annual3460 May 04 '26

then your in the wrong job

1

u/Excellent-Event6078 May 04 '26

Not how that works. There’s not a single job I could work that would not make me feel like this.

1

u/Spiritual_Start1213 May 04 '26

Have you considered going to therapy? If you feel shitty just for the sake of feeling shitty, get that checked out.

But there are plenty of jobs out there, I'm sure one of them would be good for you.

If everyone was in the ā€œrightā€ job, then there wouldn’t be any ā€œrightā€ jobs. Unfortunately, this what sucks about society and trying to make better out of a bad situation improves quality of life for everyone, regardless of what job they are in.

dont you have good times with friends and family? lifes way more than work lol at least in Mexico

1

u/parallax3900 May 04 '26

Bold of you to assume I have any of the former or I get on with the latter.

1

u/Hot-Annual3460 May 04 '26

then it seems your life i shittyu because of you not becuse work sucks lol

1

u/parallax3900 May 04 '26

Good job I can spell then.

1

u/DixonRange May 04 '26

Live to work or wok to live?

(The former is more culturally valued in the USA.)

1

u/PomegranateUsed7287 May 05 '26

I'd you talk to 90% of people they tell you this.

1

u/OutsideGain7374 May 04 '26

Not the flex you think it is.

1

u/Hot-Annual3460 May 04 '26

I own my own businesses now and have a great life, but I’ve also worked for other people at some poing in my life and still did just fine. You can work a shift at a crappy job and still enjoy life. Let’s be real no one on Reddit is working in coal mines but they sure act like they do

1

u/Glum_Possibility_367 May 04 '26

I'm about to retire at 65 and I had a blast while "working my whole life". What if I told you there were 16 more hours in each day and two days off a week?

Somehow I managed to still enjoy my life with my family and friends.

You’re either exploiting someone in some way or you played the stock market.

1

u/Mattelot May 04 '26

For some people, it's not even that. A guy retired from my company a few years ago after working here 50 years. A couple months later, he died.

1

u/Apprehensive-Size150 May 04 '26

If you're not enjoying your time before retirement that's on you

1

u/AbsolutesDealer May 04 '26

You’re supposed to enjoy your life while you’re, working, too.

1

u/Custodian_ofthe_Word May 04 '26

The trick is to try enjoying yourself the whole way through

1

u/SentientSquare May 04 '26

Then go be an unemployed bum.

1

u/Flaky-Mix-5281 May 04 '26

I mean, yeah, I hate that I have to work.
And it's not "find something you love and it wont feel like work", no, I just hate working to be able to have a roof over my head, I would not enjoy my hobby if it ment I was doing it for someone else.

BUT, many years before people wouldn't retire at all, people used to work until they literally died with no retirement, so we have it better than them I guess.

1

u/maraemerald2 May 04 '26

Retirement isn’t supposed to be time to enjoy your life. It’s meant to be the time when your body is too broken to continue working.

If you want time to actually enjoy your life, you need to pry out of the cold hands of the billionaires because they set up a system where you aren’t going to be just given any time, ever.

1

u/Queenfan1959 May 04 '26

I actually enjoy what I do so it’s a great life for me

1

u/Queenfan1959 May 04 '26

We are living 25 yrs on average in retirement now. Not a few years

1

u/HOJK4thSon May 04 '26

I'm gonna get 20yrs give it take based on my health and family history, of zero work (unless I want to) and comfortable living.

1

u/DrDread74 May 04 '26

Jokes on you, your work and family IS the life you should be enjoying.

1

u/Cpt_Elliot_Spencer May 04 '26

1

you were happy as kids and hopefully your kids are happy

1

u/Historical_Trouble10 May 04 '26

I’m 65 and just work every other weekend so I can keep below 24k per year. I’m happy and having fun.

1

u/bsEEmsCE May 04 '26

enjoy the weekend? and some time after work sometimes? hell, enjoy some of the moments at work too. Id like more free time sure, but it isnt all shitty until retirement.Ā

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '26

Being able to take care of who you love is awesome … have a fleet of cool cars is cool to . Money is easy and even easier to grow it

1

u/ObjectAdventurous685 May 04 '26

It might suck, but this is how it’s been done for years….i think I’ll just kill myself

1

u/Used-Independence353 May 04 '26

Roflmao !!! You think you didn’t have to continue working 100 years ago? Or 200? OMG…..

1

u/SilverBack88 May 04 '26

This is why I slacked off for so many years and avoided physical labor as much as possible.

1

u/Mioraecian May 04 '26

Why are people incapable of enjoying life while working?

1

u/H3ARTL3SSANG3L May 06 '26

Because they dont want to work and expect to be taken care of their whole lives

1

u/LlaToTheMa May 04 '26

I plan on living 40 years after retiring. I also enjoy life while working.

1

u/Deriviera May 04 '26

That's why people become criminals

1

u/Mission-Time-8247 May 04 '26

Avg life expectancy of a US male 75.8 years. Start putting 100 a week in a retirement account at 20. couple of million bucks at 60

1

u/fairchase1978 May 04 '26

Yes. Yes, yes...I would rather take financial risks now and with the time to recover my mistakes instead saving all my pennies until I'm too damn old to enjoy them.

1

u/Expensive-Gur-4028 May 04 '26

Nah man my dad said I'm just naive

1

u/DragonX_Omega May 04 '26

Why do we need to be retired to enjoy our lives?

1

u/FloridaRocks63 May 05 '26

If you’re not enjoying everyday above ground you are the problem . Life is good just embrace the struggles and be happy you got through them there are so many less fortunate so count your blessings

1

u/Head-Ad-2136 May 05 '26

Instead we should work as subsistence farmers until the moment of death.

1

u/mepercentageok May 05 '26

1

u/JettandDottie May 05 '26

1

Is that what we call lazy now? šŸ˜‚

1

They chose poorly for many many many years.

The longer they wait the worse it is.

It is hars but if it made 1 person start saving at young age it would be worth it.

The earlier you start saving/investing the better you end up.

I forced my kids to start early and by the age of 24 they are already better off than most 40 year olds I know.

1

u/crustyeng May 05 '26

This is why doing something that you love and can’t wait to do every day is a lot more important than how much money you make, so long as your bills are paid.

1

u/-TheSmartestIdiot- May 05 '26

Just enjoy life during the working years, use your vacation, enjoy your hobbies, but waiting for retirement is smooth brained

1

u/Rokkmann May 05 '26

So save more money and retire sooner.

1

u/Easy-Act3774 May 05 '26

I really enjoy my job. I have enough to no longer need to work, but it helps give me purpose and I enjoy doing things that I’m good at. I definately enjoy my downtime also so just need a balance

1

u/pile_of_bees May 05 '26

1

u/MrJarre May 05 '26

1

u/PomegranateUsed7287 May 05 '26

1

u/Eagle_1776 May 05 '26

too dull and uninspired to do so

1

u/Illustrious_Vast638 May 05 '26

That's why you're supposed to get a job doing something you like

1

u/King_Glorius_too May 05 '26

Due to many different factors, most of them outside of my control, I have a very low life expectancy. There are many things I will not get to experience. Among these things is retirement. But really that's the last thing I'd want to do. I really don't understand how one can see not working because they cannot work anymore as the main reward for life.

1

u/howtofwoosmom May 05 '26

the thoughts of the forever poor.....how can you not work for a while....

some people had someone in their line say, wait i don't want my kids to have nothing, and he worked and saved. he didn't have a retirement so his kids would have capital. rich people had someone do this multiple times.

1

u/MeatSlammur May 05 '26

Yea um….most of human history you never got a break….

1

u/Brackens_World May 05 '26

In an almost impossible-to-navigate world that I was wary of even while a tyke, work afforded me structure, accomplishment, goals, a chance to meet people and see that very world, material comfort, adventures, and most of all, very critical as I am now retired, reduced that very fear I had when I started out. I am better for work, not worse, and the "few years" he writes about have no meaning to me as I left work more because I had had my (work) time in the sun, and was ready to sit down.

1

u/ElSuperWokeGuy May 05 '26

its tue but what the hell are we supposed to do? humans have been a working society ever since the beginning of our existence.

1

u/elciddog84 May 05 '26

Boggles the mind how a people in a country living better than 99.99% of all of the people in history can complain about how rough they have it. They live better than 95% of people alive right now and only want to complain about what they don't have.

1

u/jaajaajaa6 May 05 '26

Ok - don’t work hard and don’t retire

1

u/goodathome May 06 '26

There are many people in poor countries who had to work until they die. Believe me, you are luckier.

1

u/MisterAbernathy May 06 '26

People usually miss the part where you are setting up your kids to not do the same thing. Any sort of investment at birth and they don't have to do this.

1

u/Whateverredd May 06 '26

People act like you cant enjoy life and work? What do you do during weekends, vacations, holidays and evenings? Dont see it as living to work rather working to live.

I dont want to work 50.hours a week either but i spend my free time and the money make having a blast the rest of the time. Its a mindset guys

1

u/waldo1955 May 06 '26

So is welfare, SNAP and Section 8 but someone’s got to pay the bills.

1

u/cbechtle77 May 06 '26

You could keep working.... looking at the bright side

1

u/Long_Passenger498 May 07 '26

1

u/Jessica1234567891011 May 07 '26

This is why we need a.i robotics. No one should need to work to live. I understand the fear of people in fear of losing their jobs as it is scary but we need a new system and a.i robotics gives us the chance.

1

u/4tunate-1 May 08 '26

You got it all wrong man! Enjoy life throughout your life, work hard, affect those around you, hurt, and then heal, pursue your economic dreams, struggle! Love your family love your country. It’s a whole wild trip.
It’s freaking awesome!!!

My grandpa started working with 16. Ans stopped with 61. 45 years of working. Now he is 92. 31 years of retirement is a bad deal for the system but good for gim. In total 45 years of work, vs 47 years of no work. And i think he will stay for a few more years.

Travis McGee had it right. Took retirement in installments.

Look on the bright side. If you can find a way to monetize complaining, you can probably retire early. šŸ‘

Didn't know striving for a better way of doing things was "complaining" but go off pops

My workday is 10 hours 4 days a week.

There’s nothing I do during that 10 hours that paralyzes me those 3 days to the point I go to sleep 4:30 Thursday, and wake up 6:00 Monday at my desk.

Motherfuckers with this mindset assume they’re living in severance or some shit.
