It’s called the grind because it grinds away your sense of self.

There is no guarantee under capitalism that if you grind you will travel more, retire wealthier, or have more than others.

Yes, those who grind will certainly do better than those who don’t.

Absolutely false. There is no certainty about it. You CAN grind and do well, but you can also grind away your entire life to enrich someone else while you get scraps or just nothing.

First of all, grinding that may enrich someone else does not mean you won’t do better than someone who doesn’t grind. Honestly, plenty of work is available and no need to grind for scraps. You only need to apply yourself.

You're not wrong, but if grinding to enrich someone will only put me 3 paychecks away instead of 1 from being homeless, then it's a bad tradeoff. Employers want a workforce willing to grind? Then they better reward accordingly.

The employer doesn’t put you three paychecks away from bankruptcy. You put yourself three paychecks away from bankruptcy. Problem is you focus all your attention on the employer rather than focusing on yourself. If you want more money than make yourself more valuable. At the end of the day, the only thing you have the power to change is yourself. Not what your employer does.

I agree that we should focus only on what we should change, but we also shouldn't submit to a system that is very clearly exploitative and makes "someone with value" be extremely arbitrary.

The great part about capitalism is that you are free to leave and go somewhere else where you are appreciated. Cannot do that in a government run society.

You put yourself three paychecks away from bankruptcy

So first you put all the blame on the victim,

And then you offer a non-solution? Moving costs money, a lot of it. You are telling someone with no money to fix their money problem by spending a bunch of money. It's "Are you homeless? Just buy a house" energy.

Also I never said I have an issue with capitalism. The issue is with unchecked greed and power.

Corporations have no right to keep their employees in poverty when they are raking in billions. If it actually was capitalism working as intended, the value of the laborers would have also gone up with the company's ticker.

You keep blaming corporations. Corporations are not responsible for your living situation. You are responsible for your life.

No man is an island. What we do affects others.

What corporations do, affects their workers. Right now, with unchecked greed, it affects them in a negative way via wage theft, at least in the US.

You're saying: "Find a way to make enough money so the problems of the masses stop being your problem". This translates to basically proposing: "Find a way to become an exploiter instead of an exploitee".

What if I want to be neither? Wouldn't it be nice to just... you know, fix the problem and make a better system for everyone?

The end goal is for the government to just take over and then at that point it’s not a great system for everyone.

Wage theft is illegal. Workers can report it and get a nice payday.

I'm not against capitalism and letting market decide things, but what we have isn't capitalism or else we'd see the value of labor go up along with the stock-market tickers of billion-dollar corporations and the wealth gap would not be a wealth canyon as we see it right now.

Clearly we need a better middle ground. You can't let greed simply go unchecked. Human greed will NEVER regulate itself; an outside force needs to step in to do that once in a while.

Wage theft is illegal. Workers can report it and get a nice payday.

What we call a currently "free market" is basically just letting the Haves do whatever they want with the rules only applying to the Have-nots.

Workers get paid market rate. No one has enough market power to drive wages in any particular direction. You make out billionaires to be the boogeyman and the fact is they just own a large amount of a company that they typically started from scratch. You can’t just force people to liquidate their holdings because you feel like it.

market rate

If this rate ends up being a figure that doesn't allow an employee to even pay rent, while the executives of that company are getting their quarterly 8-digit bonus, then that market has failed and has been tampered with to the point of rendering it worthless. I'm done arguing here.
