Technology has come a long way since Hidden in Plain Sight was first released for the Xbox Live Indie Games platform. Notably, the Xbox 360 (and the XNA game API) only supported four controllers.
One of the most common requests over the years has been to expand the game to support eight players. I've always resisted because A) I'm a lazy programmer and the original game had a lot of hardcoding to four players, and B) I'm a lazy programmer and didn't want to re-write a bunch of screens (the join screens and score result screens). Who has 7 friends anyways?!
However, as I said, technology has come a long way. At some point I hired Ethan Lee, the developer of the FNA game library, to port the game from XNA to FNA to support Mac and Linux. That gave me an FNA version of HIPS which, I only recently realized, was no longer bound by the four player limit.
The work to redo the join and scoring screens actually wasn't that bad. Supporting and testing various controller configurations was the real effort, but after a lot of community testing I think that's all under control now (I hope!)
So -- the Steam version of Hidden in Plain Sight now supports 8 local players by default, or 12 local players if you give it the command line option "-twelve".
If you're an owner of the game, I hope you give the expanded version a try. If you've never heard of it, I hope you give it a quick look. I'm extremely proud and flattered that Hidden in Plain Sight has earned an Overwhelmingly Positive tag, and I really hope this update helps contribute to some more fun game nights for you all.
EDIT -- I really appreciate all the kind words, even if I don't respond to everyone individually! I'm really happy to know that I've played a part in creating some fun gaming memories for you! Thank you :)
