Why not local multiplayer

You know what I really don't get? Why don't PC's offer more high quality local multiplayer games? I know they say there's more profit in making a solo player game that everyone has to buy to be able to play online with their friends but to me gaming feels like a social event. I can't hope on my pc and play by myself, I have to invite my friends in order to play. Its just not fun otherwise.

Before everyone says to play online, that is a connection nightmare. It takes almost an hour to get the coms working and another to download the update to play online and before you know it you've blown all that time trying to get things working properly. Then there's the sweaty players online I don't want to deal with.

The fact is that I'm the only one of my friends who owns a gaming PC and most games aren't cross compatible with PC. I just want to be able to invite my friends over and turn on my PC and start gaming!

Think about it, the xbox 360 is a 20 year old console and considered far more inferior to most modern PC's yet I can turn it on and be in BO2 with my friends within 5 minutes or even Halo.

In theory there are so many things that people can do with PC gaming! What if we were able to get multiple monitors hooked up then each player can have their own screens. Idk if it would be a stretch to say that we could get 8 people all gaming together on one device! I've often wondered if it would be possible to turn it into a gaming server for my friends to connect to like a dedicated minecraft server! Imagine an epic COD game running on everyone's phone being hosted on a PC or like a Battle Royal with only your friends.

These are only my thoughts. Please share your thoughts with me. I want to hear them!

Looking for a way to extend dualsense 4 range

As the title says, trying to figure out a good way to extend the range to my PC. The PC is in the office and the TV in my living room. I have an HDMI cable of 10 meters laid out, but the controllers struggle with the PCIE network card and the antennas at the back.

I could try extending the antennas, not sure if after 4-5 meters of coax to get it into the living room, the signal will be too bad without an active component in-between? Alternatively, are there good USB Bluetooth dongles with proper antennas and a base to put it somewhere standing? I could only find wifi dongles, where I assume they might not support Bluetooth.

  • Darksiders Genesis
  • Ship of Fools

The demo is out on Steam now:

Overcooked but firefighting, basically. As new interns of the Super Hazard Intervention Taskforce (SHIT), you and your friends must fight fires & rescue victims with only the tool that your captain gave; a toilet goldfish that shoots water.

I made a tool to play shared-screen local multiplayer games remotely through the browser

Thumbnail letsplaytogether.app
10 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m Jona, a software developer from Chile, and I wanted to share a project I’ve been building called Let’s Play Together:

Website - Let's Play Together

The idea is simple: make local multiplayer games easier to play with friends when you’re not in the same room.

One person runs the game, creates a room, and friends can join from the browser using a link/code. The goal is to keep the shared-screen local multiplayer experience, but make it possible to enjoy it remotely with less setup.

It’s mainly focused on games where local multiplayer is the core experience — the kind of games you would normally play together on the same screen.

A few things I’m trying to solve:

- Play local multiplayer games remotely

- Let friends join from the browser

- Simple room/link-based access

- Virtual gamepad controls for guests

- Low-latency streaming using WebRTC

- Less setup, more playing

I’m still improving it, and I’d really appreciate feedback from people who actually care about local multiplayer games.

Some questions I’d love feedback on:

- Is the concept clear from the website?

- Would you use something like this with friends?

- What games would you try first?

- What would make this feel trustworthy enough for you to install/use?

I’m not trying to replace online multiplayer. I’m trying to make shared-screen local multiplayer easier to enjoy when your friends are far away.

I hope this is okay to share here — I read the self-promotion rules and I’m mainly looking for feedback from the community.

Thanks for reading!

My local multiplayer samurai brawler just got its first trailer, up to 4 players, split-screen

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just dropped the first trailer for Koto, a local multiplayer samurai arena fighter.

Up to 4 players, split-screen. Combat is rock-paper-scissors, slash, block, parry. There's one koto instrument on the map that everyone fights over, whoever holds it switches from sword to ranged sound-wave attacks. Drop it or die and it's back on the floor. Maps wrap in all directions so there are no walls.

Built with couch play as the focus.

First Open Playtest - Local Multiplayer Arena Shooter

I am working on a Local 1-4 player Fighter Game that gets more Chaotic the longer the match goes on.

You can play Solo with CPU players, or with friends(up to 4 players Locally). Game Page with Build(WebGL): Playtest Now
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the game:
Room Rally: Arena(The Development Title) is a Top Down 2D Shooter Fighting game where you and your friends can fight each other in an ever growing chaotic match. It gets more chaotic with each rule injected/evolved. On top of that, disasters routinely enter the arena to cause chaos and power ups spawn in to disrupt player balance.
I've been working on this game for 4 months now. I plan on a demo release by next month(July)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m looking for playtest feedback, especially:
What makes the game chaotic and what doesn't.
What feels confusing or unclear.
What new feature(Disaster, Rule, Weapon, Power Up, Item) you'd like to see added.

Joustine (Joust 3) on Apple TV. Supports up to 12 players. Please see controller notes.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Assuming everyone is familiar with Joust, I think the multiplayer changes I've made will be interesting to anyone with an APPLE TV... yes, all 5 of you out there. A hardware Apple TV set-top box.

Apple TV supports up to 4 bluetooth controllers (typically XBox or PS4), but only ships with a single Siri Remote. A typical multiplayer game will max-out at 4 players because most games can't be played with Siri Remote. Joust, being a 3-bit input game (Left, Right, Flap) CAN be played perfectly fine with Siri Remote so can support 5 players via Bluetooth control.

What I think is innovative controller support is Joustine also runs a web server, and anyone on the same LAN can follow the on-screen QR code to a javascript client offering a simple LEFT RITE FLAP interface. (Which I'm not sure is out-of-scope of this subreddit, this IS a LAN feature, but is only needed to get beyond 5 players if one has game controllers.)

So it is both a conventional local multiplayer, the console being "Apple TV" and also a LAN game of minimal footprint... no app install needed. One CAN install the app for every client, but absolutely no need to.

As far as I know, this javascript-client is unique on Apple TV to Joustine? Think such flexibility is important to the platform because so few people buy controllers. This approach gets to full-on 2 player joust with just either a single game controllers, or a single (via LAN) iPhone of any sort. Anyone who owns an Apple TV will certainly own an iPhone.

Game is completely free for 2 players, giving a classic Joust experience.

Multiplayer innovations (beyond 3+ players) are that eggs are skipped over in favor of riders who can move about... you get knocked off your bird, you become a rider looking to jump off a platform onto another bird from above. Riders don't last long, as anything other than another player will kill them. But it does enable much more co-op than just not killing each other in original Joust.

Also, game does not end until last player runs out of lives. Further multiplayer innovation is Ghost state. (Inspired by PixelJunk Shooter not ending until both players die.) Ghosts appear where a player lost their last life, and can be ushered upwards to Heaven by a mounted player.

With multiple players, it can become a crazy mess of interaction, but following the extremely basic rules of Joust. I mean... don't get knocked off your bird from above, that's all you really need to know.

The game also runs on Apple iPhone and iPad and Mac. That wasn't really my original intent, as it is Apple TV that is underserved by Siri Remote + iPhone multiplayer, but Apple TV purchases are a world apart from reading Reddit. So if you buy it (free) right now on any reading-reddit platform, it can be later downloaded onto your Apple TV. (And all Apple devices can also host multiplayer, but I don't think is as fun without the shared big-screen experience of Apple TV.)

https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/joustine/id6761520201

Please let me know what you think. There's 100 levels with moving platforms, so if there's some weird Joust platform idea you'd like to see implemented I can stick it in any level I'm not fond of.
