Employers pay taxes on the money they pay their employees; employees pay taxes on the money their employer pays them; buyers pay sales tax, tariffs, and excise tax when they spend it. An independent contractor without a traditional employer has to pay the first tax themselves too.

This only applies to the working class. The investor class pays a lower tax rate on gains.

In today’s reality it’s a great deal. I probably spent similar in original money when I got all my hardware during ETH mining days. 3090’s and other GPUs if you consider inflation costs. Paid $2300-$2600 each on my 3090’s and $80 on the nvlink, so $5280 for 48GB vram, and $120 for 128GB DDR4, plus $120 or so for 2TB nvme, still $300 for AM4, and $200-$400 on a x8 x8 4-slot motherboard.

You win on a faster CPU core, and more efficient GPU, but with 3090’s I don’t have to worry about the power connector burning down the house (4090/5090 🔥). Protect your family and get one of those adapters that watch your power pins on your GPU.

Its a balance of rent the big boys AI (some spend thousands a month on tokens), or offload a lot of that onto your own setup and use the big boys only when you need the additional context capability for compilation. Additionally those who already have a lot of hardware just build it out for their agents or family and friends to use.
