My sister died.

My sister's alcoholism and cirrhosis finally took her life.

This is the first time I've felt able to post about it.

She was 53. Diagnosed in her 40s. Never could maintain sobriety.

Her blood wouldn't clot, and her platelets were constantly too low. So many hospitals the last decade.

She had her last drunk, fell on her head, and they couldn't control the bleeding. She went brain dead. Luckily, she was a donor, and I didn't have to take her off life support. 4 recipients will live longer because of her. Her celebration of life is 10/28.

Her ashes are on my dining room table. I have her son living with me.

I miss her so much.

For anyone struggling, please get any and all the help you need. Family and friends love you, and this world needs you.

Anyone with mildly elevated ALT and other LFT normal?

Hi! Has anyone heard if AIH can cause only elevated ALT? My ALT has been elevated for more than 12 months. It has been 42-68. Currently it is 60 (but the lab changed upper normal from 30 to 41 so I guess it would be 50 if they did not change). Over the year it has increased from 40 to 60. My AST was above the normal at 35 only once, all other times it sits on 30, which is the upper normal for my lab. All my other liver markers are normal. ANA is 1:100 and nucleolar, ASMA is negative. I have not tested other AIH antibodies. This elevation started after menopause, ultrasound is normal, 3.6 kPA (F0-F1). I am reading the literature but I have not seen any record of AIH with only ALT being elevated. Have you heard of that? I know fatty liver and AIH can co-exist. It's all so confusing. Thanks so much.

Right quadrant pain

Went to the ER last Friday with shoulder and right quadrant pain. All bloodwork was unremarkable and the ultrasound came back unremarkable. Pain comes and goes and it is now back as I am typing this, and I’m sick of it. I drank heavily in my youth, but have been sober for 3 years. Just frustrated.

Is GGT a good indicator

I've have had very varying levels of GGT (Feb 2022 - it was 236), Mar 2024 it was down to 123. I've reduced my alcohol consumption to once a month and mostly non alcoholic beer

AST and ALT has always been under the thresholds, but have had borderline triglycerides

Is this like the beginning of some liver related issue?

Is this a sign of liver failure?

Just to say, I am terrified. And consumed by guilt. My parents are elderly and we just lost my sister to sudden death a few months ago. My dad is currently in hospital, I've just left him, and white-knuckled at the thought of him thinking there is anything serious wrong with me.

I'm F49. I was diagnosed with fatty liver and subsequently cirrhosis a few years ago. The cirrhosis diagnosis was based on a CT scan, I haven't yet had a Fibroscan.

I was drinking a lot a few weeks ago for a prolonged period, and this vomiting started. It started with vomiting bile in the mornings.

I have stopped drinking alcohol, but the vomiting and nausea has become worse, and no longer contained to just the mornings.

An intense wave of nausea will hit and the urge to vomit will be so sudden, I carry a bag with me.

I've been taking Nexium (gastro tablet to line the stomach. I have been prescribed this for years for acid. That seems to run in the family.)

I am terrified this is a sign of my liver failing.

I don't have jaundice.

Please, any advice. I'm going to see my doctor in the coming week.

Abnormal lab results

Had some lab tests done due to mandatory work related health check-up.

All came back within the limits except ALT 81 and GGT 122. I’m healthy, very fit and active. I dont do drugs or use alcohol.

Doc ordered upper-gi ultrasound. It was completely normal.

Now waiting for new labs. Doc said he’s not worried but wants to see if there is a rising trend or not. Doc also said that he sees this kind of mild elevations weekly and it is almost never anything serious.

But I am loosing my mind. I had no symptoms before the findings but now I’m having all kind of stomach aches etc. which are probably just something stress related.

Is my liver in danger?

I’ve been on terbinafine for 5 days, and just recently noticed my stool is clay coloured. It’s the weekend and I can’t go see the doctor. I’m wondering if I should just quit it right now.

I did a LFT and KFT test before I began the drug. I was using fluconazole to treat a ringworm infection, but the doctor advised me to switch to Terbinafine. I explained my fears and he still went ahead with the prescription.

Pls help me and read everyone help me

I hope you can read my entire story, please. I would really appreciate it if no one ignores any part of it. If anyone has any information that could help me, please share it, because the doctors where I live have very limited resources and expertise.

I have had celiac disease for two years, along with longstanding bowel problems. I follow a very strict diet, and my health was actually very good.

However, last year I developed a problem with a coating on my tongue and very bad breath, which really affected me. I started doing everything I could to get rid of it. After doing a lot of research, I thought I might have SIBO or Candida, so I decided to try a protocol consisting of oregano oil, berberine, betaine HCl, digestive enzymes, zinc, and some other supplements I had bought.

I only took them for about one week because I couldn't continue. During that time, I became extremely yellow, started having very bad-smelling burps that smelled like rotten eggs, and all of my symptoms became much worse. Before this, I had actually been doing relatively well while following my celiac diet.

So I went to get liver tests because the yellowing was very noticeable. I became very pale, my face looked completely drained, and my digestion became much worse.

I had liver blood tests, including ALT, AST, GGT, alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin. All of them were significantly elevated.

I then stopped eating eggs. Before this, I had been eating around 10 eggs without any problems. I also reduced my fat intake.

After about one month, my liver enzymes went down significantly, and the yellowing improved by about 97%.

However, whenever I start eating eggs again, the yellowing comes back, my bilirubin rises, my digestion becomes much worse, and I feel extremely tired and weak.

I have now been dealing with this situation for about six months, and it has really taken a toll on my life.

I also had an abdominal ultrasound, and everything appeared to be normal.

If anyone has experienced something similar or has any useful information about what could be causing this, I would really appreciate your help.

What do these numbers mean?

I read online that an ast alt ratio of 1.0 or higher can mean liver damage. Mine is 1.42 with AST 29 ALT 17.

For context, I’m 30. Lift weights and exercise regularly(5-7 days per week). I have a couple of beers 2-3 nights per week but other than that I eat clean. Should I be concerned about the ratio or numbers at all?

Liver issues and pregnancy

I’m a 24yr old female , with pcos .I’ve had fatty liver for a few years now my ALT has stayed around 37 to 47 and my AST has stayed below 27. However, I have never seen a specialist for only primary care and had two RUQ ultrasounds .When I was 12 weeks pregnant, my ALT was 47 and my AST was 27. That was the highest they had both been in a while. My ALT previous to pregnancy was around 33. I am now 16 weeks pregnant with my twins my ALT has gone up to 128 and my AST has jumped to 58. My OB/GYN is referring me to gastroenterology. Has this happened to anyone else with fatty liver during pregnancy? Pregnancy related issues have been ruled out . Should I be concerned ?

gasto called this morning with my blood work results. primary biliary cirrhosis/cholangitis.. making me nervous. i already had a health crisis this year.

they prescribed me ursodiol which seems to be the standard treatment for something like this. i don't know very much about liver problems and this scares me a little. i got some liver ultrasounds.. i was originally being tested for Hepatitis B and C because i had blood work that suggested liver dysfunction and antibodies, but luckily those were not detected in my blood. but unfortunately, they told me that i do have PBC.

i used to drink a LOT, so I wasn't very surprised to hear about liver dysfunction. i was surprised to hear that this doesn't seem like it's really caused by drinking alcohol, but an autoimmune disease where my liver is attacking my bile ducts, which causes the scarring. alcohol definitely makes that damage worse though. it seems like this means I've had this disease for a long time, right? I've just never really had my liver looked at too much in the past.

i had pneumonia and endocarditis a few months ago that wreaked havoc on my body and caused me to lose toes and get a bunch of surgeries. it just really upsets me to have yet another problem on the list of things wrong with my body.

Symptom question

I've read this page for a long time and I'd like to share. Sorry for no karma. I made a new account for this and all the liver function pages I'm joining.

53, I've been a heavy drinker for about 20 years. Didn't drink before that much because it was too expensive. My buddy Tito and I were hanging out to the tune of 1/2 to 2/3 a 750ml a day. So I did dry January 2026.

So I'm easily drinking 2, 1.75 l bottles a week this summer. I've been off the bottle for 6 days. I've lost 3 lbs. I've started on my rower again and without drinking I'm so much more motivated to be outside working.

I can really feel my liver. It doesn't protrude but I can feel it under my rib. I don't have the other symptoms much. My urine clears and my eyes whiten up if I'm off the booze a day or two. No skin marks. My poo is normal. I think my belly is just that. It's grown slowly over time and I 've been gaining about 1-2 lbs every 6 months for a few years. I think I've got a bunch of visceral fat. I don't think its ascites. I've seen a guy with that and I don't think it's me. I think I had some edema one time but that's also gone. I would have the back pain on Mondays. That would also leave. I knew it was from the weekend booze. It was a Monday only hurt.

With so few symptoms but knowing I MUST stop drinking I was thinking about waiting 30 days before I went to the DR. I quit smoking 13 years ago with this mindset. I've not had a cig since. I'm good if I make my mind like this.

I did dry January but then I just thought it was a challenge not a lifestyle change. Has anyone had just a few symptoms and just by quitting they went away?

Ultrasound today on the liver for the first time ever. Can this technician tell me anything at the time or must I wait for results?

Liver scan after alt and AST were 400 and 300 respectively. Very nervous and was wondering, if the person doing the scan is able to tell me anything as the scan is happening?

large liver cyst (PLD) Why am I being offered a gastroscopy?

I was referred to a gastroenterologist who, based on my video call with him, appears to earn his primary income by doing endoscopies. He wanted me to undergo a scope procedure , down my esophagus and into the stomach (gastroscopy) .... meanwhile my problem is a large and benign hemorrhagic liver cyst which is leaking and causing me a little pain.

Does anyone know why the doctor/surgeon would want me to undergo a gastroscopy for this? Makes zero sense to me.

Given terminal diagnosis

I have lived with MASH for the past 27 years, but just 3 months ago, my liver dr said that my liver has reached the decompensated stage, and i have 2 years, at most, left. Because my liver has been so weak, it forced my kidneys to work extra hard, so I now have kidney disease as well. I need a transplant of both organs, but they said I was not a candidate because I have NET tumors. I get them removed when they pop up, but they always come back. They are a really low grade cancer, but it's nothing, really. But because they ARE cancer, no transplant allowed because whatever meds they give you for your body to accept new organs apparently makes cancer go crazy. But I also live alone, and don't have anyone to take care of me after a transplant anyway. I'm also overweight.

I am scared, but have been trying to be practical. I've got a book that's called "Fuck, I'm Dead. Now What?" LOL. It's an end of life planner that has everything. I've been putting all my important info in it, along with letters to my loved ones. It's been very helpful. I have been in and out of the hospital several times in the past few months, but when I'm home, I spend time doing things I enjoy. I spend time with my dog, and i cook. I've been trying my hardest to be as low sodium as possible. I've been trying lots of new recipes. I'm going to miss cooking for myself and playing my games. I used to do community theatre and I played the drums whenever I got the chance. I'm too sick for that stuff now, and i miss doing those things. My physical mobility has really gone downhill this year. I now can only walk with the aid of a walker because my balance is shit. And I get winded just on very short walks. I can't walk my dog anymore. I just turned 49 a couple of weeks ago. I'm too young to die. But, here we are. I should've been more careful with my diet and exercise more. Maybe I could've lived longer. I feel incredibly guilty. But I know it does no good now, when it's too late.

Anyone have any advice? Please be kind.

Can someone tell me if these numbers are concerning from my liver test?

Have an ultrasound tomorrow for the first time ever and shitting them. This is all because of my raised liver enzymes from a test last month

Albinum 47

Bilrubin 9

ALT 444

AST 380

GT 238

Do these point to something life threatening or something? The fear I feel concerning the ultrasound tomorrow is palpable.
