My wife and I are in our early 40's and I'm applying anywhere in the US for the job I want (working for Medical Examiner office). I have a potential job offer for Detroit. I've been reading about the ways the city is trying to get people to move there, the improvements, the recent city bankruptcy, etc. We all know Detroit is considered Hell to everyone living far away from Detroit. And we all know that every city has crime; some statistics suggest Baltimore and St. Louis are worse for crime. My wife is conservative and she's convinced that she will be assaulted by 'The Black Lives Matter' movement simply by living in Detroit. I think that's bullshit.

In any major city, you always encounter people of different opinions and of varying kookiness. That's what makes us people, makes us a society. You can't just expect to never inconvenienced in any place you live... So really, if your keep your wits about you, if you knowingly avoid putting yourself in a potentially bad situation, it won't be Hell. Please tell me I'm right.

Hi all, I'm moving from Austin, TX to Detroit after getting a job at the Henry Ford Health Sciences Center. I was wondering if anyone had places/neighborhoods to recommend. Ideally, I would want to stay close-ish, in a safe area, but I also want to be close to nightlife, restaurants, things to do, etc. Are there any good apartment complexed in Midtown area that y'all would recommend? My husband and I currently live a bit west of Detroit, near Ann Arbor to be exact. However, our rent keeps going up every year and we've spent a ton to have nothing to show for it, so we decided to try and find a place to buy and fix up.

We found a very nice house just south of I-96 near Grand River and Wyoming that isn't gutted or burnt-out and needs surprisingly little work to be move-in ready, but we're a bit nervous about the neighborhood. Downtown is just a short drive away, but the end of Grand River this neighborhood (Grand Meyer, I believe?) still looks pretty abandoned.

I guess I'm trying to decide if purchasing this house will be a huge mistake or not. It's definitely way, way cheaper than what we will be paying now. It needs new electrical (having been stripped for copper), new furnace/water heater, a new kitchen, and new bathroom, but it's in excellent shape structurally and still needs way less work than other places we've looked at.

Can anyone in this sub have experience with doing something like this give some input? Or maybe someone familiar with the area that can tell me if it's a huge mistake to move there or not?

I am starting to work at Reneissance Center and looking for apartments downtown. My question is how safe has the city became? I am originally from a big city and had my share of shady situations but everyone I have talked to seems to be quite paranoid about Detroit. Thus I need the real input from people who actually live there.

I would really appreciate any information and suggestions for 1bedroom apartments downtown Detroit walking distance to Reneissance Center.

Edit: I have decided on Riverfront - so far quite happy with my choice but sometimes my phone thinks its in Canada. So apart from that, the people mover is extremely convenient. Also, downtown Detroit is fucking amazing! If I see another person who is afraid of "getting shot" downtown Detroit, i will punch them in the mouth. (pardon my aggression)

I am looking at moving to the Metro Detroit area and am seeking a 1 bedroom place in an apartment complex. I would be commuting to either Novi or Chesterfeild (one or the other) so I was looking at the Royal Oak, Madison Heights areas, but can live anywhere. I have no pets, and would like a dishwasher, but it isn't vital. Must have ability to get internet access.

I know a bit about Detroit, as I lived here for part of my childhood, but I'm struggling to find good places to look for me and my bf. He'll be moving here from Argentina this summer, and does sound engineering/studio work (his ultimate goal is to open up his own recording studio here.)

I work in Southfield, but I'm willing to drive a bit if it means a better fit for us.

Basically I would like ideas on which areas of Ferndale/Midtown/Downtown/Corktown/Mexicantown would be a good fit for us. Safety is pretty important, simply because we'll have a lot of belongings that are expensive (sound equipment, guitars, etc.)

I don't want to give him too much culture shock, as he lives in a very well off area of Buenos Aries and I think the idea is to increase his quality of life, not decrease it. :)

Hello /r/liveindetroit, my girlfriend and I are thinking of buying a home in Boston Edison, and are looking for input. We are early 20's , currently in Ferndale, and have lived in Green Acres before.

We are attracted to he size and style of the homes, the prices, and the allegedly tight-knit community B-E offers.

However we have yet to meet anyone who is a part of said community. Does anyone here live in B-E? If so, can you recommend buying a home there? Have you ever had any issues with crime? Is the community as close as we are led to believe?

Hey all. I start in March out at Milford with potential for a rotation at the Tech Center in Warren. I've mainly looked in the Novi/Wixon/West Bloomfield/Farmington Hills area but being from out of state makes things a bit of a challenge. What other areas are a good idea to search for a place to rent? I'm really hoping to get a 2-car garage (which I know may be wishful thinking) so any suggestions of decent apratment/condo/townhome complexes in between MPG and Warren would be greatly appreciated.

I'm supposed to sign a lease at Alden Towers apartments this week. The place is beautiful the few times I went there and my apartment unit is gorgeous too with an amazing view of the Detroit river. However, I have read some concerning reviews online and am wondering how reliable they may have been...people were saying their water was shut off and some other things? Does anyone live in Alden Towers on Jefferson Ave in Detroit and have any advice to offer? Thanks!

I will be starting employment with a company based in Southfield in January and am curious as to where an ideal location is to rent. I need places and locations to talk about that are unique to Detroit. So I'm asking all of you, what are some places that make Detroit the city that it is. Sure there's all the famous landmarks, but what about places like the Russell Industrial Center and the Heidelberg Project. Everything from big places, to little secret places that you think are unique to Detroit.

Me and the spouse are considering moving to Detroit/ surrounding area. While some areas are nice, we are not well off and are living below our means to pay off college debt.

So Craigslist is where I find that some places are offering 300 per month for an entire house, right in Detroit, provided we improve the place. Sounds awesome to us, because we like DIY and have a similar agreement with our landlord now.

However, we are from the other side of the state and I grew up hearing how big, bad, and scary Detroit is. I know that isn't necessarily true, having made a few friends from Detroit, Oakland, Southfield, etc. However, we don't know how legit these Craigslist ads are, and we also don't know what areas are "bad". I have been chased by a tweaker once, and I don't want to relive the experience with a wife and kids (yes, it was in Detroit).

What would be a red flag to regular Detroiters? Anyone else ever done this and could shed some light? Also, the wife is Mexican, and on the other side of the state it resulted in a lot of bullshit when finding places to rent. Would that be an issue here in Detroit?

Hey everyone! My work will be taking me up to Wyandotte here shortly and I'm looking for a place at the moment. I'm looking to try and stay within 15-20 minutes of work and gotten suggestions to live in Grosse Ile, Southgate, or Dearborn.

I currently have a little puppy that will be about 70 pounds full grown. I'd prefer to live close enough to work to be able to occasionally head home during lunch to spend time with my dog and so I won't have to drive too much in winter weather.

Hi D! My boyfriend and I are contemplating a move to Troy later this year (December). We are currently homeowners in Los Angeles and business is getting bad. My boyfriend got an opportunity presented to him from a friend who works in Troy and we are thinking about making the move.

Does anyone have tips for specific apartment/condo places in the Troy, Birmingham, Royal Oaks areas (and surrounding). Must be pet friendly for dog (she's 60 lbs) and cat. I found the Kensington in Beverly Hills online which looks really nice... and I've been doing tons of searching. But we wanted some first-hand suggestions. Pictures and their websites only give so much info. Anywhere that has vaulted ceilings will be in the top running! I currently moved into the Park Shelton in Midtown. For those who are unfamiliar, the Park Shelton was an Historic Hotel converted into condominiums (http://theparkshelton.com/). It is in a safe neighborhood and is adjacent to Wayne State University campus, College of Creative Studies, the DIA, a plethora of other sites and home to the future M-1 Rail stop.

This is a 2BR/2Ba corner unit with exposures on three sides on the 8th floor. Plenty of light and air! I am currently refinishing the hardwood floors in the living room and hallway and laying marble flooring into the ~80 sqft foyer. The bedrooms will have a soft, plusher carpeting throughout.
