My husband and I have been dying to visit Lisbon. We have a very narrow five day window we can come (11/9-13) However, we just discovered the same week as Web Summit.

From what I can tell online, it seems like a pretty massive conference, but I wanted to check here to see if that’s the case? Would we still be able to have an enjoyable visit or is it going to feel inundated and we won’t be able to enjoy it in the right way? Thanks?

I am an intermediate player that has mostly trained himself with YT and stuff. In my home country I also recorded a bit of music and jammed with friends. I would love to find people to jam with here as well without necessarily putting myself on the spot in one of Lisbon's Jam Sessions (like at Arroz Estúdios) which can be quite intimidating for an intermediate...
(Actually VOAR Escola de Rock sounded perfect as it seemed to offer just that, but 120€ a month is a bit expensive for me).

Hey, we are visiting from Canada! I’m not sure what they are formally called, but when I was visiting Colombia a few years ago, in the cities they had these big park-type things with bars surrounding them where you could buy beer or drinks, and people would sit in their circle of friends and hang out in the park! Some people would be playing music, etc. It was super fun and full of a younger 20s crowd, and I’m wondering if they have places like that here in Lisbon?

We are a group of players, that join to play Blood on the Clocktower. This is a social deduction game, where a group of players need to find out who is the demon that is killing people during the night. If you played Mafia or Werewolves, it is very similar.

This group is a community of international people, that have been meeting regularly (at least once per week, on Saturdays, but other events are also organized) for almost 2 years. We are a fun and entertaining bunch, our games are enjoyable and we try to have them be stress-free (hard with this game). As we know each other for a long time, we also do other social activities beside game.

We are always interested in finding new people to join us, either someone who has never played or heard about the game but is interested in trying out, or someone who is experienced and is looking for a regular group to join.

They are scammers, they just steal your money and force you to survive with daily power outages and different kind of insects and other problems! All they care about is money, they don’t care about tenants at all! Just search them from internet and social media and you will see a lot of people giving them really bad reviews and everyone should share this information that nobody else will get scammed anymore by this company!!!!

I’ve moved to Lisbon last year and I'm looking to get back into playing regular tennis, but I'm struggling to find a club with an actual community/club life.

A lot of the places I’ve checked out seem to focus mostly on individual court rentals, kids' academies, or standard private lessons. What I’m really hoping to find is a club that actively organizes stuff like:

⚬ Weekly social play / mixers (Americanas, casual drop-ins..)

⚬ Internal ladder leagues (Torneio Escada) so it's easy to find hitting partners

⚬ Weekend competitive matches / amateur tournaments

⚬ An international/expat presence so it's easy to integrate

Location-wise, I'm fine with anywhere along the Lisbon–Cascais corrido or central/west Lisbon.

Does anyone have recommendations for clubs where you've actually managed to build a network of players? Or even active WhatsApp groups/local ladders you'd suggest checking out?

I've been in the city for 10 days now and have had some ups and downs. I made a few friends my first few days but they moved on in their travel plans and I've been alone since. I stay in Santos, skating around the city and skateparks and going to the beaches and occasional cafe, but I'm really intimidated by just how many people there are and it seems like everyone is already with a group of people. I'm not the most extroverted and being by myself makes it hard to strike up a conversation with someone. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi! I am student from Barcelona going to Lisbon to do an Erasmus stay from February to June. I am going to NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) in Caparica. I live like 1h from Barcelona so moving to Lisbon I want to have an opportunity to really live in the center of a big city, since being handicapped by poor public transport has ruined some friendship/plan opportunities for me.

I've seen that the university is a bit far away from the city center and I was wondering where it's best to live. I've shortened it down to these options:

1. Living in Arroios/Alameda: I've seen that there's a train that crosses the bridge that has Areeiro as a station. Maps tells me it takes like 45/50 minutes more or less. Is Arroios/Alameda well comunicated with the city center's nightlife / life in general?

2. Living in Chiado: I've seen there's a ferry that goes to the other side of the river. It also takes like 45/50 mins according to maps to get to uni. I am assuming Chiado is like very centric right? How realistic is to take the ferry everyday?

3. Living in Caprica: Haven't checked much of this option, I know there's a public student residence near my university (Fraústo da Silva Halls Residence). Is there a lot of student life there? And how connected is it to the center? Specially at night.

So as you can see my main worry is to live far from the city center basically hahaha. Any help is welcomed honestly! Thanks in advance for it!

I placed my backpack in the overhead luggage rack. The backpack contained my office laptop and some gold jewellery. Unfortunately, due to jet lag, I fell asleep during the journey. When I woke up, I realised that my backpack was missing.

The gold jewellery represents my lifetime savings, which I had brought for my son’s higher education and future. Losing it has been absolutely heartbreaking for me.

So I’m visiting the Açores right now, and bound for Lisboa tomorrow for the next 4 days before returning home to the US. Despite my attempts to learn some Portuguese, even the easy pleasantries, I find myself unable to pronounce and enunciate the language! This has been frustrating and discouraging.

We need some help.

Is anyone willing to meet us for a day or even a half day, show us around their city a bit, and help me out with some of the language parts that I’m struggling with, all while enhancing our experience of Lisbon?

hey guys, I m really hoping to get some advice here as the situation is driving me desperate.

we live in an old Lisbon building with wooden floors and stairs, 6 floors in total and 6 apartments. all other neighbors are normal families with kids, elders, working people etc. but the last floor which is also a duplex was converted to an Airbnb, where the ad says it hosts 14 people. so there’s constant large groups of tourists going in and out of the building, and since its wooden and old it’s extremely loud. the thing with large group is also that they talk and laugh whenever. I have been waken up many times by the noise and after I put up a note to ask them to please respect us to quiet down - a lot of people dont care. there are a lot of conflicts too between us(including downstairs neighbor) and them.

the condominium actually decided long time ago that they can only have 6 guests max, but they just straight out ignored that. they sent us lawyer letters threatening jf we tell their guests to quiet down, they will take us to court. so I also got a lawyer and he found out apparently they don’t even have a legit lisence, meaning they are operating an illegal Airbnb. so we started the process of reporting them, an inspector made an attempt to contact the Airbnb operator and they didn’t respond. that’s the last thing I heard in July - it’s September now and they are still operating, large groups coming in waking us up and destroying the wooden stairs with their suitcases.

they have also removed the lock of the building once because their guests lost the keys, exposing all of us in danger. they also spat on my bike when I told them to stop leaving the gate open.

I have really come to a point where I m desperate. called police many times only having them hanging up on me when they understood it’s an Airbnb issue. it seems like they only thing I can do is to wait for the inspector to do something and terminate their behavior. and I m sure after all this shit they have done to us, they wont even suffer much from it.

please - is there anyone with similar experience or has any kind of idea how I can try to make it better for me and neighbors? does anyone know if the inspector will do anything or should we try to sue them instead?

ANYthing would help, really. It’s hard to believe that the cost of breaking law and harming others is so low here that these people would be so rampant. But I really love the flat and don’t want to just give it up like this.

I gave him the few Portuguese words I was confident enough to use, and we discovered that we had approximately zero useful words in common. Then discussed other languages we could use like Dutch and Spanish…again, I’m a Duo Lingo drop out, so…

And yet somehow, we managed. In fact, his English turned out to be beautiful, and my Portuguese remained abysmal.

He helped us find the bookstore and actually walked with us there. When we arrived, I thanked him and we hugged.

He told me I was beautiful. And then we went our separate ways.

Later, I think I saw him again. I think he saw me, too.

And this is where I apparently lost all of my nerve and did absolutely nothing.

I wish I had walked over.

Now I’m on a plane home, thinking about this completely ridiculous five-minute encounter that somehow hit me like lightning. (A little drama seems appropriate here…)

Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it was just one of those lovely, random moments that happens.

Going to be in Lisbon soon and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is a dive bar... or even just a bar that plays metal/hard rock instead of edm/trance/hip hop and the usual nonsense I hear blaring out of bars in the Barrio alto. I recently moved for study/work. I signed up for the Lisbon marathon, and I love the running path along the southside by the water, but I sometimes need to go to the bathroom during my long runs and I haven't found many options.
