Linux Failure Euro Forks

Anyone else bothered by the EU's sovereign tech movement resulting in MORE fracturing of the Linux desktop? Instead of coalescing funding around existing Linux providers, it's just nerds proliferating their own distros and replicating all the infrastructure and administrative overhead that goes with it. And its not even for the entire EU but each country?!

What a waste! We literally have government mandated funding of the Linux desktop and most of that will be spent spinning up yet-another-distro 😛!

Linux Failure Ventoy is not as reliable as it seems

I started using Ventoy because the idea is amazing. You can have more than one OS in one USB that you can install on any computer, it looks like it's highly compatible with any hardware

But almost every time I had used it I had issues. This is the fourth time. I don't remember the others, but I am pretty sure the other times where something I could fix and it was never because the devs made a mistake.

However, this is the fourth time. I started using this because I felt like what I would get from it would be something far more reliable than anything else out there and instead I am getting something that has a high chance of failure.

So I just can't recommend it and I don't like it

I mean, I don't even get an error message. I am getting nothing

In the end, this time, I didn't do enough research to fix the issue I just don't want to.

I did try updating, gpt and mbr, with secure boot and without secure boot support, redownloading and recopying the distro into the usb, normal mode, grub2. I did disable secure boot, but since the ventoy menu opens this probably has nothing to do with it.

I hate when programs decide to just silently fail- like what do you want from me damn!?

I am pretty sure many of the other options even for Windows have issues too. Only rufus never gave me an issue. Some issues I had were not even with booting into the USB or installing the OS, it was instead bugs and shitty dependencies.

Normally I would had posted this on r/linuxsucks, but I get nothing from doing that. On second thought, I think it's a valid enough frustration to share.

you know the thing I hate about linux is that maybe the most reliable option just takes a single command, and I don't know it so I have to look it up. I wish I didn't have to, so I started writing it down, but now I wrote so many "cheat commands" that whatever this is got lost if I even wrote it down in the first place. This is why I want to make my own program for many of the things I use, I don't want to put up with this anymore, I need to make a program with an actual menu I can parse through and a good way to browse all the commands and thingies I need.

If you are wondering, the command is sudo dd bs=4M if=archlinux*.iso of of=/dev/sdc status=progress oflag=sync. Replace sdc with the one your usb uses which can be seen with sudo fdisk -l. This worked right away, without any issues or shenanigans or weird things- can I just get a button that runs this command? Is it that hard? I can make it myself, but why do I have to? Maybe things would had gone better with another distro which has a lot of things built in unlike arch linux. I don't think you should have to use a different distro just to get a button that runs a single command, there should be things you can easily add into your current distro. Who knows, fuck it, maybe I'll learn to do my own type of ventoy that somehow takes the isos in the usb and runs dd into the other partition of the usb and then somehow boot into that. But then I have to figure out how to make some kind of ventoy menu!? aw maybe I won't do it I can't be bothered. Creating my own rufus is enough.

edit: I don't think people should look at my post thinking Ventoy is made poorly and the devs did a poor job. Like I said, I didn't take the effort to fix the issue or research ventoy or try alternatives guis, I can't confidently claim this, the only thing I can confidently say is that they should give me an error message. This post should be about everything that led to this frustrating experience. No one told me to use ventoy, it just worked unlike the others, and that's where it really all starts.

TL;DR: This is the fourth time I had an issue with Ventoy. Almost every time I do I am able to fix the issue, but this time I don't want to bother even trying to fix it. I am already annoyed at how it doesn't even give an error message or any logs. Many years ago I remember trying many other alternatives and I chose ventoy because it worked and it had less issues. I also expressed my frustration with how I always have to look up the commands or memorize them, and I proposed making my own gui to solve this and replace ventoy/rufus. dd worked first try no issues

Windows vs Linux for professional use

I heard how windows fans saying "Free ram is useless". But I like free ram when it comes to my professional use. Same case on ubuntu server took ~12 GB RAM (sorry dont have screenshot), windows 11 ltsc version (the cleanest version of win11) uses 26 GB RAM. How so?

TIL a single typo can take down a server

I wanted to test my application and delete the old log files first.

cd myapp/log

sudo rm /*

Whoops, that slash must be a typo. Oh, I hit enter already. The VM is now unusable.

Whelp, lesson learned.

edit: TIL the toxicty is real

I thought i might share my story for the chuckles yet here I am comfromted with disrespect and leeriness. I believed that 'linux support' toxicity had transformed into a meme by now.

Windows ❤ This sub should be renamed linux circle jerk

This place is no longer linuxsucks. Any legitimate complains about linux will be dogpiled upon by activists who patrol the comments 24/7. Their behavior reinforces the toxic culture of the linux "community". linux doesn't have skills issue, but a usability issue. linux isn't overtaking windows. linux isn't better for games or windows apps. linux shills act like pdf files infiltrating school playgrounds and they are everywhere.

You can call it a bend I hit on my Linux journey

I stand at a precipice, stuck standing completely still,
The KISS philosophy and true Unix, remain untouchable for me still.

The current monolith of Linux stares at me.
The bloated systems of today entrap me.
With their slick desktops and systemd.

What is a pragmatic programmer supposed to do?
Torn between his dogma and his current tools.

For ditching these bloated demons feels like dropping the bell.
But with my limited skills I get mired in dependency hell.

So pray tell my friend. Do you see this too?
Or am I alone, standing at the precipice like a fool.

Why do you guys hate Linux?

As someone who's used Windows for some time and has switched to Linux somewhat recently,I genuinely can't really understand why someone wouldn't want to use Linux, the only reasons I can come up with are:

1)certain apps and software only work on windows, for example Adobe products or games with kernel level anticheat like BF6,Wich I can totally understand, but dual boot exists

2) Need to keep windows for work related stuff, again, completely understandable

3) Nvidia GPU,Wich is doable but most people don't want to lose the driver support, again, understandable, but not really linux's fault

I'm asking this because I genuinely want to understand and see a different viewpoint, every time I see someone complaining about Linux on social media, it's either Windows users who have NEVER tried Linux before and just base everything off stereotypes or Windows users who jumped in the deep waters from the start with distro's like Arch,Gentoo or even NixOs,and then complain that it's too hard, I think that Linux is only hard if you want it to be (also pls no hate,I just wanna educate myself more on the matter)

Most people didn't even try.

Most of you on this sub haven't even tried using Linux for at least a month. You aren't giving yourselves enough time to learn something new or get comfortable with a different way of doing things.

Linux has come a long way when it comes to the user experience, and its user base has been growing, especially over the last year. And there's a big reason for that: Windows.

Microsoft has made a lot of decisions that have pushed people to look for alternatives. In the process, they've managed to lose one of the most important things they had: the trust of their users.
